For a YouTube stream sent from an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) instance, check outbound connectivity to the ingestion URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room—not an inbound RTMP port on your instance. Prefer YouTube’s encrypted RTMPS connection; if an SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443. A working stream also depends on the OCI route, applicable security-list and network security group (NSG) rules, the guest operating system’s firewall, and a valid stream key.
Which ports and firewall rules does YouTube streaming need?
YouTube ingestion is a connection initiated by your encoder and sent outward to YouTube. For that reason, a YouTube push stream normally calls for checking egress—not opening an inbound RTMP listener on the OCI instance. Use the actual server URL and protocol displayed in your Live Control Room; YouTube recommends RTMPS, and its troubleshooting guidance says to try port 443 if an SSL error persists. That is specific troubleshooting advice, not a claim that every encoder uses one destination hostname or that port 443 is the only possible port.

Do not add an inbound rule simply because the protocol is called RTMP. Inbound access is relevant only if your design actually accepts incoming contributions or serves an application. Keep administrative access such as SSH or RDP separate from YouTube streaming, and restrict it to authorized source addresses rather than exposing it broadly.

OCI has two VCN packet-level controls to inspect: security lists, which apply to VNICs in an associated subnet, and NSGs, which apply to selected VNICs. A VNIC can be associated with up to five NSGs. A security list and an NSG may both apply, so check every attached layer instead of editing a rule set that does not govern the instance. Oracle recommends NSGs when you want to separate application security requirements from subnet layout.

A successful stream needs an egress path as well as permission at the packet-filter layers. Identify the instance’s VNIC and subnet, then establish whether its traffic should leave via an internet gateway, NAT gateway, proxy, or another configured route. The right route depends on the deployment; there is no single route-table recipe for every OCI subnet.
OCI’s default security list includes stateful SSH ingress and broad stateful egress, but a custom list or NSG policy may differ. Stateful connection tracking permits return traffic for a connection initiated under a stateful rule. Also check the guest OS firewall: an OCI rule allowing traffic does not prove that the operating system permits it. Oracle explicitly advises aligning host firewall policy with NSG and security-list rules.

Check whether OCI is actually carrying the stream
First identify where OBS or another encoder runs. If it runs on your own computer, OCI is not in the video-ingestion path, so changing the OCI firewall will not fix that computer’s outbound connection. If the encoder runs on an OCI Compute instance, inspect that instance’s egress route and the rules on its actual subnet and VNIC, as well as the host firewall and DNS resolution.

Confirm the encoder can reach the specific YouTube ingestion endpoint shown in Live Control Room using the selected protocol. Do not assume a static destination hostname based only on an example from another setup. If you use a proxy or custom network path, include it in the diagnosis.

Set up YouTube Live Control Room and your encoder
- Select or create the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to reach Live Control Room. Select an existing stream or create or schedule one, then open the stream settings.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the displayed stream URL and stream key into the matching server/URL and key fields in your encoder. Prefer the RTMPS URL. If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, YouTube advises using it; otherwise retrieve the RTMPS URL through the lock icon in Stream settings.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Start output and verify reception: Start the encoder’s stream output. Check that YouTube receives a preview and inspect stream health. Depending on the stream workflow, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Test the real workload: Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion representative of the event, then monitor stream health during the event.
A firewall that permits the connection cannot correct a wrong event key, incorrect URL, unsupported protocol, incompatible encoder settings, or inadequate upload capacity.
Match encoder settings to YouTube and your upload capacity
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant-bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Follow settings supported by your encoder and chosen codec.

Use the row matching both your resolution, frame rate, and codec. A speed test is only a snapshot; leave enough headroom for a stable stream rather than treating a brief peak as sustained capacity.

Troubleshoot common YouTube RTMP and OCI firewall failures
- Connection timed out: Recheck the copied server URL, selected protocol, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Then verify DNS resolution, the subnet’s egress route, applicable OCI security-list and NSG rules, and the OS firewall. If the encoder runs locally rather than on OCI, troubleshoot that computer’s network instead.
- SSL or certificate error: Confirm the URL and server are RTMPS rather than RTMP. If the SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443.
- No preview or rejected stream: Confirm the key belongs to the selected event and is current, and check the URL, protocol, and encoder settings. Reset an exposed key, then update the encoder with the replacement.
- Intermittent or unhealthy stream: Compare the actual upload capacity with the YouTube bitrate guidance for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the encoding configuration and monitor Live Control Room stream health.
- OCI instance unreachable for administration: Treat this separately from YouTube egress. Check the intended SSH or RDP ingress rule, allowed source CIDR, subnet security list, attached NSGs, route, and guest firewall. OCI’s default security list does not include RDP ingress.
