Usually, no. Optimum says its provider-supplied gateway, which combines modem and Wi-Fi router functions, is included with all plans. Whether you need separate equipment depends on your service configuration, especially if you have phone service or want to use your own modem. Check your current offer and account for any equipment charge before buying anything.
What Optimum supplies: a gateway, not always a separate router
Optimum’s certified-modem page says its provided gateway is included with all plans. A gateway combines a modem, which connects to the provider’s network, with a router that distributes the connection over Wi-Fi and wired connections. For ordinary home Wi-Fi, that means a separate router purchase is not automatically necessary.

“Modem,” “router,” and “gateway” do not mean the same thing in every setup. Optimum’s page also lists an Arris TM3402 modem for phone service and explicitly labels it “Not Wireless.” A modem that supports internet and voice does not necessarily provide Wi-Fi; confirm the complete modem, phone, and router arrangement with Optimum before choosing equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOptimum’s equipment page says the gateway is included with all plans, but also has a separate modem-rental paragraph that says rental starts “as low as $15 per month.” The page does not establish that every customer pays that amount—or that every account has the same equipment arrangement. Check your order or current account details for any actual charge.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Should you use Optimum’s gateway or your own modem?
| Option | What Optimum says | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Optimum-provided gateway | Included with all plans; Optimum describes 24/7 technical support and replacement for provider-supplied modems that malfunction or need upgrading. Optimum certified-modem page | Convenience and provider support; check your current offer for any account-specific equipment charge. |
| Customer-owned modem | For Optimum Internet without phone service, Optimum requires a DOCSIS 3.1-certified modem or gateway and says customers must activate it. DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 modems are not allowed for this use. Purchased modems do not include the stated Optimum support or replacement coverage. Optimum certified-modem page | Confirm the exact model and service configuration with Optimum. You are responsible for the equipment, and a separate router may be needed if the modem does not provide Wi-Fi. |
Optimum says customers using their own modem should call 877.694.9474 to activate it; check its current instructions in case the activation process changes. The published DOCSIS 3.1 rule applies to internet-only service; it does not establish that any particular modem will work with phone service. The page lists the TM3402 for voice but marks it not wireless, so verify your complete setup before purchasing.
Buying your own modem is not automatically cheaper. Compare its purchase price with any equipment charges on your actual offer, how long you expect to keep the service, and the value of provider support and replacement. The available Optimum information does not establish a universal savings amount.

What if Wi-Fi does not reach every room?
A router can provide Wi-Fi without covering every part of a home well. Optimum says an extender may be needed in some circumstances and provides an installation guide for its own extender. That guide documents Optimum’s extender workflow; it does not establish compatibility for every third-party extender or mesh system.
Older Optimum residential terms describe a possible monthly extender equipment fee and recommend a wired connection for the extender setup they cover. They also caution that wireless installation may not resolve every range or signal problem. Because those terms are dated 2020, verify current equipment availability and charges with Optimum rather than assuming the older fee or setup applies to your account. Optimum residential terms

Know what the supplied equipment does on your network
Optimum’s residential terms say supplied wireless routers, gateways, managed access points, and Altice One units may be configured to broadcast a separate Altice or Optimum hotspot network as well as your home network. The same terms make subscribers responsible for home-network security and do not guarantee the security of the equipment or connection. These statements come from terms dated 2020; review the terms that apply to your account for current details. Optimum residential terms

If Optimum replaces your modem or gateway, return the old provider-owned equipment according to its instructions to avoid a possible unreturned-equipment charge. Optimum’s internet self-setup guidance covers equipment setup and returns. Its Gateway 4 guide also tells customers replacing that device to return the old equipment; it documents that model’s setup, not a promise that every customer receives Gateway 4.
