Optical zoom range is the span of focal lengths a zoom lens can cover using its glass alone, usually written in millimeters from the widest setting to the longest, such as 24–200mm. A multiplier like “8.3x” describes the same span as a ratio, but it hides where the range starts and ends.
What optical zoom actually changes
Optical zoom changes the lens’s focal length. Sony puts it this way: “With optical zoom, the zoom lens is moved forward or backward to adjust focal length.” (Sony support). OM System likewise separates this physical change from digital enlargement (OM System FAQ).

Focal length governs angle of view and magnification. A shorter focal length gives a wider view; a longer one gives a narrower, more magnified view (Nikon focal-length guide). The “range” is therefore the set of views the lens can produce without any image processing.
Range versus zoom ratio
The range gives two endpoints. The ratio divides the long end by the short end. A 24–200mm lens spans about 8.3x (200 ÷ 24).
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
| Lens | Range | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Example A | 24–200mm | about 8.3x |
| Example B | 100–830mm | about 8.3x |
Both examples (illustrative, not specific products) share the same ratio, yet A is a wide-to-moderate lens and B is a pure telephoto. This is why the multiplier alone can obscure how wide the lens starts and how much reach it has.
Actual versus 35mm-equivalent figures
Compact and bridge cameras with small sensors often quote 35mm-equivalent focal lengths, which express the field of view as it would appear on a full-frame format so cameras can be compared. Quote whichever convention the manufacturer uses and do not mix actual and equivalent numbers in one comparison.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
A current example: Nikon’s COOLPIX P950 overview lists 83x optical zoom, 24mm–2,000mm in 35mm-equivalent terms (Nikon COOLPIX P950, observed 2026). That is a model-specific manufacturer claim, not a general benchmark.

Why digital zoom doesn’t belong in the range
Digital zoom enlarges or crops image data through processing. It does not change the lens. Casio’s support page for the QV-R70, an older model, describes a 5x optical zoom that combines with digital zoom for 5x–25x overall, and explains that digital zoom processes the center portion of the image (Casio support; year not stated). The 25x figure is a combined capability, not the optical range.

- 40x Optical Zoom Camera: Bring distant subjects into sharp focus with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning group portraits to tight close-ups of birds in flight, athletes, and stage performers; genuine optical reach
- 20MP CMOS Sensor: Capture rich, detailed images with vibrant color across changing environments; photos stay sharp enough to print large and enlarge, from birthdays and vacations to wildlife and sports
- Optical Image Stabilization: Hold a sharp frame at full 40x reach without a tripod; built-in OIS actively reduces hand shake, which matters most at sporting events, concerts, and anywhere you cannot move closer
- Automatic Scene Detection: Point and shoot while smart scene modes handle the technical decisions; 1080p Full HD video records travel clips and family moments, with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC support up to 512GB
- Runs on AA Batteries: Travel without a charger; this bridge camera takes standard AA cells sold worldwide, so a safari or cross-country drive never depends on an outlet; backed by over a century of KODAK imaging
The same applies today: Nikon describes the P950’s Dynamic Fine Zoom as digital zoom reaching 4,000mm equivalent, while the optical figure stays at 2,000mm (Nikon).

- Endpoints: note both the shortest and longest focal lengths, not just the multiplier.
- Convention: check whether numbers are actual or 35mm-equivalent.
- Optical only: separate optical figures from digital or hybrid extensions.
- Mode limits: features and zoom restrictions vary by model and shooting mode, so check the specific manual or spec page (Sony).
No standards body defines the term; it is manufacturer terminology, and the figures above are product specifications rather than independent measurements.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- 52x Optical Zoom Camera: Reach distant subjects with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning sweeping landscapes to tight telephoto shots of birds, wildlife, and athletes; genuine optical sharpness, not a digital crop
- 6fps Burst Mode: Catch the decisive moment in fast action; 6fps shooting captures rapid sequences of wildlife and sports, then review on the 3in LCD and keep the sharpest frame
- 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor: Sharp, detailed images with better low-light performance; built-in OIS counters hand movement even at full 52x reach, so handheld telephoto shots stay crisp without a tripod
- Built-in Wi-Fi: Share straight from the field; connect to your phone or tablet to transfer photos and post immediately, or use the phone as a live remote viewfinder; 1080p Full HD video records smooth sequences
- Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery: Power extended sessions in the field; accepts Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 1.5TB for thousands of photos and hours of Full HD video across a full day of shooting
