The OPPO A79 5G is a 2023 India-market phone with a clear split: its 50MP main camera can produce good daylight photos, and its 33W charging is convenient, but its LCD screen, modest low-light and selfie results, and limited headroom for demanding games make it a conditional buy. It makes most sense if those strengths match your priorities and the price you find today is competitive—not because of its historical launch price.
What the OPPO A79 5G offers
This review concerns the Indian OPPO A79 5G, model CPH2553, in its listed 8GB RAM and 128GB storage configuration. OPPO’s specifications list LPDDR4x RAM, UFS 2.2 storage, and storage-card support. Specifications and network bands can differ by region, so check the exact model if buying outside India.

Pros and cons at a glance
- Pros: good daylight results from the main camera; 33W charging; a large FHD+ display with a 90Hz mode; 5G; and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- Cons: LCD contrast and color do not match AMOLED alternatives; low-light detail and selfies are weaker; demanding games are not its strong suit; the phone can feel bulky; and the review noted too many preinstalled apps.
Display: large and smooth, but not AMOLED
The 6.72-inch FHD+ screen has a 90Hz mode, which can make scrolling feel smoother than on a standard 60Hz display. OPPO lists brightness up to 680 nits, and 91mobiles reviewer Shekhar Thakran found it reasonably bright. However, it is an LCD: in the reviewer’s comparison context, its contrast and color fell short of AMOLED options. Choose it for size and resolution rather than deep blacks or especially vivid contrast.

Camera: a daylight strength with clear limits
Main camera
The 50MP main camera is the A79’s strongest imaging argument. Thakran reported reasonably accurate daylight color and good edge detection. The default AI mode boosted colors, so photos may look more saturated with it enabled. The reviewer also found portraits decent, but that should not be mistaken for a dedicated zoom or versatile multi-camera system: the secondary rear camera is a 2MP unit.
Low light and selfies
Low-light photos lacked detail in the review, and the 8MP front camera was judged underwhelming. If night photography, fine detail in dim scenes, or frequent selfies are priorities, the A79 is a weaker fit than its daylight-camera strength might suggest.

Performance and gaming
The Dimensity 6020 handles ordinary tasks adequately, according to the 91mobiles review, but demanding workloads are less suited to this phone. The reviewer reported some heating after gaming for more than half an hour. In a 50-thread CPU throttling test run for 30 minutes, the device retained 92 percent of its peak performance. That is a result from one specific test, not a guarantee of gaming frame rates or sustained performance in every app.

These are dated results from the reviewer’s testing, not a current ranking against newer phones. For casual use, the phone may be sufficient; for intensive gaming or maximum performance per rupee, look elsewhere.

Battery life and charging
OPPO lists a 5,000mAh typical battery and 33W SUPERVOOC charging. In Thakran’s use, light usage lasted beyond a day, while heavier use could mean charging by evening. The reviewer measured 74 minutes from 0 to 100 percent. Separately, OPPO’s October 2023 launch announcement claimed 51 percent charge in 30 minutes under the manufacturer’s stated conditions; that is not the same measurement as the review’s full-charge test.
Software, design and everyday details
The India specification page lists ColorOS 13.1. The 91mobiles reviewer called out too many preinstalled apps and described the phone as bulky. The punch-hole display design was a positive for the reviewer, who scored design 7/10. The available product details do not establish the phone’s current software-update status or support duration, so check OPPO’s current regional support information if update longevity matters to your purchase.

The 3.5mm headphone jack is a practical plus for wired headphones, while the listed India-market 5G bands may matter if you travel or buy an imported unit. Confirm band compatibility with your carrier and the exact regional model rather than assuming all A79 5G versions are identical.

Is the OPPO A79 5G worth buying today?
Consider it if you want a large 90Hz screen, 5G, a headphone jack, convenient charging, and a main camera that performs well in daylight—and if its live price undercuts alternatives with better displays or faster processors. Skip it if AMOLED contrast, dependable low-light or selfie photography, sustained gaming, or strong performance for the money matters more.

OPPO announced the A79 5G in India on October 27, 2023, with a launch price of INR 19,999 and sale beginning October 28. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote. The 91mobiles review, published January 23, 2024, gave the phone 7/10 overall, including 7.5/10 for display, camera and battery, and 6.5/10 for performance; its value judgment was based on the asking price at that time. Current retail pricing, stock and newer competitors are not established here. Check a live listing for the correct model and configuration, then compare it with phones available at the same price before deciding.
