As of Opera’s September 10, 2026 update, the New Tab button sits at the top of Opera One’s vertical tab strip by default. To restore the earlier layout, open Easy Setup and use its option for the previous vertical-tab layout. Opera’s announcement does not specify the exact control label or a more detailed path inside the panel.

Opera identifies Easy Setup as the place to change back, but does not publish the control’s exact label or a click-by-click sequence. The default changed in September 2026: the New Tab button is now at the top of the strip, and new tabs also open at the top, except inside a Tab Island. The earlier arrangement put the button after the open tabs and, when the strip filled the available space, at its bottom.

These routes enable the vertical layout; they are not documented as direct shortcuts to the button-position setting. Opera’s July 23, 2026 guide lists three ways:

Opera’s guide to Vertical Tabs covers setup and the original layout. Vertical Tabs place the strip on the left, between the sidebar and page content; the strip can be resized, collapsed, or expanded.

Which layout should you use?
Choose based on where you prefer to reach the New Tab button and where you expect newly opened tabs to appear. The top-first ordering is excepted inside Tab Islands, so grouping tabs there may change what you see. Neither placement is universally better; Opera leaves the choice configurable.
Opera said its change followed feedback from 4,900 Opera One desktop users who had Vertical Tabs enabled and were surveyed in August and September 2026. The company reported that over 73% of those respondents opened tabs by clicking the New Tab button. That is Opera’s survey result for that group, not a measure of all browser users. In explaining the change, Opera also said a bottom-docked button could sit roughly 950 pixels below the address bar on a 1080p display, roughly 1,300 pixels at 2560×1440, and over 2,000 pixels on a native 4K display without scaling; those are Opera’s illustrative estimates for a full strip, not independent measurements.
