Opera’s built-in VPN and Ad Blocker are separate, optional privacy tools: the VPN routes traffic from Opera through a VPN server, while the Ad Blocker filters advertising content in the browser. The free VPN covers Opera browsing, not every app on your device. Here’s what each control does, how to enable it on desktop and mobile, and where its limits are.
What Opera’s VPN and Ad Blocker do
The two controls address different parts of browsing. Opera’s VPN changes the network route used by Opera and, according to Opera, encrypts the connection between the browser and its VPN server. The Ad Blocker filters ads from pages. It does not encrypt traffic or disguise your IP address.

| Control | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Opera VPN | Routes Opera browser traffic through a VPN server. Websites see the server’s apparent IP address and region rather than your usual one. Opera says the browser-to-server connection is encrypted. | Opera’s free built-in VPN does not route traffic from other apps on the device, and it does not itself block ads. |
| Ad Blocker | Filters advertising content in Opera and can reduce exposure to some tracking scripts. | It does not encrypt connections, mask your IP address or make you anonymous. It also does not guarantee that all tracking is blocked. |
| Tracker Blocker | A separate Opera privacy control for blocking trackers. | It is not the same control as Ad Blocker or VPN; each is toggled separately. |
Opera explains that websites can identify a visitor’s IP address and approximate location without VPN; when VPN is on, they see the VPN server’s apparent region. Opera also notes that cookies can still identify a user even when location is disguised. For Opera’s explanation of the distinction between VPNs and ad blockers, see its VPN explainer and Opera Help’s security and privacy guide.

Find VPN and Ad Blocker on Opera mobile
On Android and other mobile layouts, open Opera’s Settings and look for VPN, Ad Blocker or privacy controls. The exact path differs by operating system and app layout; on Android, controls may appear in the Opera menu, and their position can vary between phone and tablet layouts. Opera’s Opera for Android FAQ describes those layout differences. The VPN and Ad Blocker feature pages also cover mobile controls.

What the free VPN protects—and what it doesn’t
The free built-in VPN applies to browsing inside Opera. It does not cover traffic from other browsers or apps on the device. If you need whole-device routing, Opera identifies VPN Pro as its paid whole-device option; compare supported devices and platforms, server locations, account or plan requirements, and current price before choosing. The sources cited here do not establish a current VPN Pro price.

Those are the company’s claims, not a guarantee of anonymity or an independently established finding in this article. In a May 29, 2026 post, Opera said Deloitte was given access to its VPN and server infrastructure to check the no-logging claim. That is Opera’s account of the review. Its representative Michael Tegos described the company’s position this way: “The safety and security of Opera’s VPN depend on two major factors: encryption of your browser traffic to and from the VPN server and no-logging – the fact that Opera’s VPN does not collect, store, or process data about your browsing activity and your traffic.” Read Opera’s full explanation.

Optional automatic protection on public Wi-Fi
Opera’s September 24, 2026 announcement says desktop VPN can automatically activate on public Wi-Fi, with the setting remaining opt-in. Because this feature’s availability can depend on release and platform, check your installed version’s VPN settings rather than assuming it is present or enabled. See Opera’s announcement.
Quick Recap
When to use each control
- Use the VPN when you want Opera’s browsing routed through a VPN server and want to change the apparent network region seen by websites. Opera says the browser-to-server connection is encrypted.
- Use Ad Blocker to filter ads in Opera; allow a site or manage exceptions if the page does not work as expected.
- Use Tracker Blocker separately if you want to adjust Opera’s tracker filtering. Neither blocker should be treated as a promise that every form of tracking stops.
- Choose a whole-device VPN service if your goal is to route traffic from apps outside Opera; check coverage, locations, requirements and price for the specific service.
