Choose KVM for most new VPS deployments. It provides an independent guest operating system and kernel, so you can use custom kernels, kernel modules and a wider range of operating systems. Choose OpenVZ when your workload is a compatible Linux userland, you value very low virtualization overhead and high container density, and the provider gives clear resource and isolation guarantees. The virtualization label is only part of the decision: CPU contention, storage, backups, support and migration procedures can matter more than the hypervisor name.

OpenVZ and KVM in one minute

OpenVZ is operating-system-level virtualization. Each container has its own processes, filesystem view, network configuration and resource limits, but all containers use the host’s Linux kernel. OpenVZ documentation describes this directly: different virtual environments can run different Linux distributions, while every environment operates under the same kernel.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

KVM creates hardware-virtualized virtual machines, normally using the Linux kernel’s /dev/kvm interface together with QEMU. Every VM boots a complete guest operating system with its own kernel. That extra boundary is why KVM can run systems and kernel configurations that a shared-kernel container cannot.

Question OpenVZ KVM
Own kernel? No. The container uses the host Linux kernel. Yes. The guest boots its own kernel.
Best fit Compatible Linux services where density and quick management are priorities. Custom kernels, kernel modules, full OS images and stronger VM separation.
Virtualization overhead OpenVZ documentation reports approximately 1–2% CPU resources for its virtualization layer; this is a product figure, not a universal benchmark. Additional memory and device-virtualization work is possible, but no authoritative source establishes one universal performance winner.
Guest operating systems Linux userlands compatible with the host kernel. Independent guest kernels and a broader range of operating systems, subject to provider image and licensing support.
Isolation model Namespaces, cgroups and related kernel controls. A hardware-virtualized VM boundary plus the guest kernel’s own controls.

How the two architectures work

OpenVZ: containers around one kernel

An OpenVZ host runs one Linux kernel and divides it into isolated execution environments. A container receives a virtualized view of processes, filesystems, IPC objects, network interfaces and selected system settings. Cgroups account for and limit CPU, memory, storage and other resources; namespaces keep one container’s process and system views separate from another’s.

The shared kernel removes the need to emulate a complete hardware platform for every tenant. Startup is therefore close to launching a normal Linux process tree, and an image can be moved or recreated quickly when the provider’s tooling supports it. The trade-off is fixed at the architecture level: a container cannot load a kernel module or change a kernel setting that the host does not permit.

KVM: a complete virtual machine

KVM is integrated into Linux through the /dev/kvm subsystem and its ioctl API. In a typical deployment, QEMU supplies virtual devices while KVM uses hardware virtualization extensions to execute guest code. The VM sees virtual CPUs, memory, disks and network devices, then boots its own kernel and operating-system userspace.

Because the guest kernel is independent, an administrator can select a distribution image, rebuild a kernel, install modules and configure low-level services without changing the host kernel. The provider still controls the physical host and virtual hardware policy, but the guest’s operating-system boundary is substantially broader than a container’s.

Kernel control and operating-system compatibility

When OpenVZ is sufficient

OpenVZ is appropriate when the application only needs ordinary Linux userspace facilities: web servers, databases, queues, application runtimes and monitoring agents that work with the provider’s kernel. You can usually choose among supported Linux distributions at the userspace level, but the kernel remains the host’s choice.

  • Confirm that every required module is already available through the provider’s kernel.
  • Check whether the application expects to write to /proc or /sys settings that the container policy hides.
  • Verify that nested virtualization, FUSE, eBPF features or special networking modes are explicitly supported if your software needs them.
  • Ask whether the provider uses a current OpenVZ implementation and which container limits apply to processes, file descriptors, sockets and memory.

When KVM is the safer choice

Select KVM if you need to install a custom kernel, compile or load a kernel module, change low-level kernel configuration, or run an operating system that cannot share the host Linux kernel. A Windows guest, for example, normally requires a full VM rather than an OpenVZ Linux container. KVM is also the practical default for appliances, BSD-based systems and distributions whose kernel expectations differ from the host.

Some software checks for virtualization features or expects direct control of boot parameters. In a container those checks may fail even though the program itself is Linux-compatible. A KVM guest can present a conventional boot process and virtual hardware, making such software easier to support.

Which is faster: OpenVZ or KVM?

OpenVZ has a structural efficiency advantage for compatible workloads because it does not maintain a separate guest kernel and full virtual hardware stack. OpenVZ’s feature documentation reports that about 1–2% of CPU resources are spent on its virtualization layer. Treat that as an OpenVZ documentation figure for its container implementation, not as a cross-provider benchmark or a promise that every container will outperform every KVM VM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KVM performs additional work for guest memory management and virtual devices. The practical effect depends on CPU virtualization support, storage drivers, network configuration, workload pattern and host contention. A storage-heavy database on an oversubscribed node can be slower than a lightly loaded KVM VM, while a CPU-bound service may see little meaningful difference after both guests are tuned.

No authoritative, dated cross-platform benchmark establishes a universal KVM-versus-OpenVZ winner. Measure the characteristics that affect your service instead of choosing from a generic speed ranking.

What to measure before moving production

  • CPU: sustained throughput, single-thread latency and behavior during neighboring-tenant load.
  • Memory: available headroom, reclaim or ballooning behavior and swap activity.
  • Storage: random I/O latency, queue depth, durability and performance during snapshots or backups.
  • Network: packet rate, latency, burst limits and behavior at the plan’s stated bandwidth cap.
  • Operations: reboot time, image restore time and the provider’s response to a failed host.

Run the same application test on the exact plans you are considering, at the times your service normally peaks. A provider’s oversubscription policy and noisy-neighbor controls can dominate the small virtualization overhead difference.

Isolation and security: what changes with the boundary?

OpenVZ separates containers with namespaces, cgroups and additional kernel controls. The model can isolate filesystems, processes, IPC and selected sysctl views while accounting for resource usage. It is a strong fit when the threat model accepts a shared host kernel and the provider maintains that kernel promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KVM inserts a hardware-virtualized boundary between the guest and host. A guest still depends on the provider’s hypervisor, firmware and management plane, but it does not share the host’s kernel for ordinary system calls. That reduces the consequences of a guest-kernel requirement or a container escape flaw, although it does not make a VM automatically secure.

For either option, security also depends on operational controls:

  • Apply guest and application patches on a defined schedule.
  • Use least-privilege accounts, firewall rules and key-based administration.
  • Verify image provenance and remove unused services before exposing the instance.
  • Encrypt sensitive backups and test restoration rather than assuming snapshots are backups.
  • Ask how the provider handles host-kernel updates, hypervisor maintenance, abuse response and compromised tenants.

Choose KVM when an independent guest-kernel boundary is part of your threat model or compliance design. Do not describe either technology as inherently secure without examining the provider’s controls.

Migration and portability

OpenVZ live migration

OpenVZ documents live migration for virtual machines and containers. The process copies memory and disks, briefly suspends the source, transfers changed pages and blocks, then resumes the workload on the destination. Whether it works in practice depends on the provider’s topology, storage and orchestration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The documented requirements include:

  • A network capable of at least 1 Gbps for migration traffic.
  • Source and destination hosts in the same subnet.
  • CPUs from the same vendor with sufficient compatible capabilities.
  • A supported storage layout and migration-aware configuration.

OpenVZ’s migration tooling also uses CRIU and P.Haul for container migration, with cgroups and namespaces providing the resource-isolation foundation. A provider may disable or limit these mechanisms, so ask for its actual procedure rather than assuming documentation-level capability is exposed to customers.

KVM migration considerations

KVM migration depends on the provider’s hypervisor, disk backend, CPU compatibility policy and image format. Some providers offer live migration only within a cluster; others require a shutdown, export and import. Confirm whether snapshots, attached volumes, static IP addresses, licenses and boot mode survive the move.

Provider features matter more than the label

Two plans carrying the same virtualization name can behave very differently. Evaluate the provider as carefully as the technology.

For a Linux VPS with full root access, Antihost VPS offers AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D hardware, NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB of RAM in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine. It is self-managed and includes L3/L4 DDoS protection on a 1 Gbps port.

Provider factor What to verify Why it affects the decision
Resource guarantees vCPU entitlement, memory limits, burst rules, throttling and whether limits are dedicated or shared. A nominally efficient container can underperform on an oversubscribed host.
Storage SSD or NVMe type, I/O limits, redundancy, snapshot behavior and restore objectives. Storage latency often determines database and application responsiveness.
Backups Frequency, retention, off-host copies, encryption, restore testing and extra charges. A snapshot is not a recovery plan unless it can be restored when needed.
Image catalog Supported Linux releases, Windows or other guest systems, custom ISO support and image update policy. KVM’s flexibility is useful only if the provider exposes the images and boot options you need.
Network Port speed, transfer allowance, DDoS handling, IPv4/IPv6 availability and private networking. Migration and production traffic can have different bandwidth requirements.
Support Whether support covers the guest OS, rescue mode, kernel issues, restores and emergency reboots. Container plans may have narrower support boundaries than full VM plans.
Migration Supported source formats, live-migration scope, downtime, IP retention and rollback. Portability reduces the cost of a later provider or architecture change.

Decision matrix: choose by requirement

Decision axis Prefer OpenVZ when… Prefer KVM when…
Kernel control Your workload works with the host kernel and needs no custom modules. You need your own kernel, modules or low-level kernel configuration.
Operating system You are deploying a supported Linux userland under a shared-kernel model. You need an independent kernel or a guest operating system that cannot use the host kernel.
Density and overhead High container density and low virtualization overhead are primary goals. The workload benefits from a full VM boundary and guest-kernel independence.
Isolation Kernel-level container isolation fits your threat model and provider controls. You require a separate guest-kernel VM boundary.
Migration The provider meets the network, CPU, subnet and storage conditions for its OpenVZ process. The provider offers a KVM migration path compatible with your images and tooling.
Operations The plan has explicit container limits, backups and container-aware support. The plan has clear VM limits, snapshots, rescue tools and image support.

Practical scenarios

Choose OpenVZ for a dense Linux application fleet

If you operate many small, conventional Linux services and all of them support the host kernel, OpenVZ can reduce per-instance overhead and speed up provisioning. This is most attractive when the provider documents fair CPU scheduling, memory behavior and container limits. Keep a tested image and confirm that your monitoring, firewall and backup agents work inside the container model.

Choose KVM for a custom-kernel or module-dependent service

Drivers, security products, filesystems and observability tools may require kernel modules or settings unavailable inside a container. KVM lets you install the required guest kernel and maintain it independently. Plan for kernel update testing, boot recovery and a rescue path because you now own more of the operating-system lifecycle.

Choose KVM for mixed operating systems

A team that runs Linux alongside Windows or another non-Linux guest should standardize on KVM-capable infrastructure. Separate VM images keep each operating system’s kernel and boot process intact. Check licensing, virtual-device drivers and provider support before committing to a specific image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on migration constraints

If a provider’s OpenVZ cluster satisfies the documented 1 Gbps, same-subnet, compatible-CPU and storage requirements, live migration may be straightforward. If your destinations span vendors, CPU generations or networks, portability may favor KVM only when the provider supports export, import and compatible virtual hardware. In both cases, perform a restore and migration rehearsal before production.

How to make the choice step by step

  1. List non-negotiables. Record required operating systems, kernel modules, custom sysctls, virtualization features, storage performance, public IPs and compliance boundaries.
  2. Eliminate incompatible architectures. Remove OpenVZ if any requirement needs an independent kernel or unsupported guest operating system. Remove KVM only when the provider lacks a required image, device or migration path.
  3. Compare the plans, not just the hypervisor. Put vCPU policy, memory limits, storage performance, network terms, backups and support side by side.
  4. Test the workload. Use representative CPU, memory, storage and network tests on the exact plan and region. Repeat during busy periods if possible.
  5. Validate operations. Create a backup, restore it to an isolated instance, reboot through the provider’s console and document emergency access.
  6. Confirm exit options. Obtain the image format, export procedure, IP and DNS implications, migration downtime and any data-egress costs before signing up.
  7. Recheck after deployment. Monitor steal time, throttling, I/O latency, memory pressure, packet loss and backup success. Move providers or virtualization types if measured behavior violates your service objectives.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake: choosing on overhead alone

A low virtualization-overhead figure does not compensate for poor storage, CPU oversubscription or weak support. Compare measured application latency and recovery performance, not just the hypervisor’s theoretical cost.

Mistake: assuming every Linux distribution is equivalent in a container

A different userspace does not create a different kernel. Check module availability, syscall behavior, systemd expectations, cgroup version and provider restrictions before deploying an unusual distribution.

Mistake: treating snapshots as backups

Snapshots can share the same storage failure domain as the running instance. Maintain an off-host copy, define retention and perform a full restore test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: planning migration without checking topology

OpenVZ’s documented live-migration conditions include 1 Gbps networking, same-subnet placement, compatible CPUs and supported storage. A design that ignores any one of these may require downtime or a different migration method.

Mistake: assuming KVM removes all security work

The VM boundary does not patch applications, restrict administrator access or protect an untested backup. Harden the guest and evaluate the provider’s hypervisor and management controls.

Bottom line for most buyers

KVM is the default recommendation when you are unsure: its independent guest kernel handles custom modules, kernel tuning and a wider OS range. OpenVZ is a deliberate optimization for compatible Linux workloads where density, fast lifecycle operations and very low virtualization overhead outweigh kernel independence. Make the final decision only after checking the provider’s resource guarantees, storage, backups, image support, isolation practices and migration process.
