To enable OpenTelemetry (OTel) for the GitHub Copilot app, an enterprise administrator configures the telemetry property in the enterprise-managed managed-settings.json file, including an OTLP-compatible destination. GitHub announced app support on September 22, 2026; its general managed-settings reference still describes the setting as supported for Copilot CLI and VS Code, so confirm behavior with your deployed app version and policy before rolling it out broadly. GitHub’s app announcement is the specific source for app support.
What OpenTelemetry adds to the Copilot app
OpenTelemetry export lets an organization send Copilot agent-session telemetry to a monitoring system for analysis. GitHub describes uses including reviewing agent sessions and investigating unexpected behavior through traces. The announcement demonstrates analysis in Splunk Observability Cloud, but Splunk is an example, not a required or uniquely supported destination. GitHub’s agent-monitoring guide describes the signals and backend setup.

Traces
Traces show the sequence of work in an agent session, connecting steps such as model calls and tool use. They can help administrators inspect where an interaction went unexpectedly.
Metrics
Metrics are numeric measurements; GitHub gives input and output token usage as examples.

- Chipset & Supported OS: FTDI-FT232RL Chipset for widest possible stablity and compatibility with Windows (10/8.1/8/7XP), Mac, Linux, etc. Support almost all serial COM port
- Plug and play: Powered by USB-C port, no external power adapter required. Simple installation, plug & play after one time driver installation.
Events
Events capture point-in-time actions, such as whether a user accepted or rejected an edit.
What you need before configuring export
Choose a secure destination that can receive OTLP telemetry. It can ingest OTLP directly, or you can place an OpenTelemetry Collector between Copilot and the monitoring backend if the backend cannot accept OTLP itself. Check that the destination supports the signals your team plans to inspect and fits your organization’s authentication, security, privacy, retention, and existing monitoring requirements. GitHub’s guidance does not prescribe a retention period or legal basis.

Configure telemetry in enterprise-managed settings
GitHub’s September 22, 2026 announcement directs administrators to configure the telemetry property in managed-settings.json. The managed-settings reference documents fields including enabled, endpoint, protocol, captureContent, lockCaptureContent, serviceName, resourceAttributes, and headers. The following schematic uses the shape of GitHub’s example; replace the endpoint and authentication details with values approved for your environment. The token shown is illustrative, not a credential.
{
"telemetry": {
"enabled": true,
"endpoint": "https://otel-collector.example.com",
"protocol": "http/protobuf",
"captureContent": false,
"lockCaptureContent": true,
"serviceName": "copilot",
"resourceAttributes": {
"deployment.environment": "production"
},
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer TOKEN"
}
}
}
In this example, enabled turns export on, endpoint identifies the destination, and protocol specifies the export protocol. serviceName and resourceAttributes label the exported telemetry; headers supplies HTTP request headers for authentication or other approved needs. Confirm the values and expected protocol with the endpoint or Collector operator before deployment. See the enterprise managed-settings reference for the documented property details.

- Extensive Equipment Compatibility: The RS-232 compatible USB C serial cable is essential for a myriad of devices, including CNC machines, GPS units, telescopes, set-top boxes, Cisco network switches, sewing machines, and more.
Decide whether to capture content
GitHub’s monitoring guidance says prompts, responses, and tool arguments are excluded by default. The optional captureContent setting can include sensitive material such as code, file contents, and user prompts. Keep content capture disabled unless the organization has deliberately approved the additional collection and its handling.
The lockCaptureContent field lets administrators prevent users from changing the content-capture setting. Review both content capture and its enforcement with security and privacy owners before enabling export; the documentation does not set a retention duration or establish a legal basis for collection.

Keep app telemetry separate from repository configuration
The app’s repository-level .github/github-app.yml file configures project instructions, scripts, and automation; it is not where enterprise telemetry export is configured. GitHub says repository settings are reviewed and accepted before use and warns that configured scripts receive GitHub credentials. Do not substitute that project configuration for enterprise-managed settings. GitHub’s repository configuration documentation covers that separate feature.

GitHub’s September 22, 2026 release announcement explicitly says the Copilot app now supports OTel configuration through enterprise-managed settings. The general managed-settings reference documents the telemetry object but its explanatory prose names Copilot CLI and VS Code. The announcement does not specify a minimum app version, rollout schedule, or plan and geography availability matrix. Verify the behavior and applicable policy for the app version deployed in your enterprise.
