OpenSeadragon’s merged PR #2972 adds an optional status field to TileSource and Viewer open-failed events when an HTTP response status is available. Applications can use it to distinguish failures such as authorization errors from other image-open problems; failures without an HTTP response may have no status.
What problem did the change address?
The original request asked to make HTTP status accessible in an error callback. In the reported failure path, the browser exposed the response code as xhr.status, but OpenSeadragon did not pass it through its failure events. As an error moved from TileSource to Viewer, consumers could receive the failure message without the status needed to classify the response.

The request is recorded in OpenSeadragon issue #2541. Contributor Ahmed Sayed also described the missing propagation in a DEV Community retrospective.
What does PR #2972 change?
The merged change adds an optional status property to TileSource and Viewer open-failed event data, forwarding the response status along the existing error path when it is available. The existing failure message and logging remain in place, while event consumers gain an additional piece of information.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The PR also updates TypeScript definitions for both event shapes and adds a regression test that returns an HTTP 404 and checks event.status. Its review follow-up covers IIP and Iris failure handlers and updates Viewer event documentation. See the merged PR #2972 for the change and review record.
How can an application read the status?
In an open-failed handler, read the event’s optional status property. For example, an application can branch on the value when present and retain a fallback for failures that do not carry an HTTP response:

viewer.addHandler('open-failed', function (event) {
if (event.status !== undefined) {
console.log('Image open failed with HTTP status', event.status);
} else {
console.log('Image open failed without an HTTP status');
}
});
This illustrates the event-facing property introduced by the PR; it does not assume every error originates from an HTTP request. Use the event definitions for the OpenSeadragon version in your project to confirm the available event type information.
When will `status` be missing?
The field is optional by design, not a guarantee that every failed open has a numeric HTTP code. Reviewers noted that TileSources may override fetch behavior, and some sources generate tiles locally rather than receiving them over HTTP. In those cases there may be no response from which to obtain a status. The PR’s scope is to expose the status when available, not to invent one for non-HTTP failures.

What did the PR report about validation?
The PR description reports that 390 tests passed in the full OpenSeadragon suite and that TypeScript definition checks succeeded. Those are results reported by the PR, not an independently reproduced test run.
Why was the change kept narrow?
Review discussed a broader modernization of the networking layer and more structured error payloads, but those ideas were outside the scope of this change. The merged approach preserves existing XHR and error-event handling while forwarding status where it exists. It improves error detail incrementally without claiming to unify HTTP, custom-fetch, and generated-tile failures under one status model.
