That is because the task has two parts: writing valid OpenSCAD and expressing the intended geometry precisely. A reliable fix is to specify dimensions and relationships, then check the model through compilation, preview, final render or export, and visual and dimensional inspection.
Why can OpenSCAD code compile but still make the wrong model?
OpenSCAD scripts describe geometry using primitives, transformations, and Boolean operations. A script can follow the language rules and still place a feature incorrectly, omit a component, or create proportions that do not match the request. Passing the parser is evidence of code validity, not proof of geometric correctness. The OpenSCAD language reference documents the language constructs and operations used to build these models.

Prompts often leave essential geometry undefined. Words such as “small,” “centered,” and “rounded” do not specify units, dimensions, coordinate origin, axis, radius, thickness, or how parts relate. If those details are missing, the model has to guess. State the measurements and relationships explicitly, including which parts must touch or remain connected.
Spatial reasoning and validation are difficult even for people working with programming-based CAD. A 2024 study interviewed 20 such CAD users and reported challenges including 3D spatial understanding, validation, code debugging, organic-shape creation, and navigating code views. Why does generated code have a syntax error?
OpenSCAD has its own syntax and semantics; resemblance to another programming language is not enough. A generated script may misuse a language construct or operation, or contain an error that prevents evaluation. Read the OpenSCAD console for the actual error rather than assuming the shape itself is at fault. The official language reference is the appropriate reference for checking constructs and operations.
Keep the first version small enough to diagnose. A base primitive with one feature is easier to check than a long script that creates many parts at once. Named parameters and modules also make it easier to identify which dimension or feature needs correction.

Why can preview look right while render or export fails?
OpenSCAD’s interactive OpenCSG preview and its final CGAL render/export are different checks. The manual describes mode-dependent behavior for $preview, and notes that command-line PNG preview behavior differs from generating STL, DXF, or SVG. A plausible screen preview therefore does not establish that the final output will render or export correctly. Use the official OpenSCAD documentation for the distinctions between preview and final output.

Boolean operations can be especially sensitive to how solids meet. With difference(), the subtracting object should overlap the target and extend fully outside the volume being cut. If it only meets a surface or stops inside the target, the preview may show artifacts and the final render may produce non-manifold warnings or remove unintended pieces. Extend a cutter past the target rather than ending it exactly on a face.

For 3D printing, inspect the exported STL as well as the on-screen model. Check that the file contains a non-empty mesh and look for missing, disconnected, or non-manifold geometry. A model can appear plausible in preview while having defects that matter only in the exported mesh.
Why are parts detached or dimensions hard to change?
When relationships are not expressed, generated parts can drift apart or stop matching when one dimension changes. Solver-aided LLM-driven CAD research identifies detached components and inconsistent edits as problems with unconstrained designs; constraints can make a change to one scale or dimension carry through related geometry. In that paper’s experiments, the solver-aided language produced results closer to prompts than OpenSCAD, including in some few-shot settings. These findings are specific to the study’s tasks and do not establish that every solver-aided system outperforms every OpenSCAD workflow. Solver-aided CAD study.

For a practical OpenSCAD script, use named parameters for dimensions that should change together, and make the intended relationships explicit in the code. The language’s assert() can stop preview or render generation and report a failed condition, which is useful for checking assumptions such as a positive wall thickness. An assertion can check a stated condition; it cannot independently prove that the resulting object matches the design request. OpenSCAD language reference.
How to fix LLM-generated OpenSCAD code
- Specify the geometry. State units, overall dimensions, coordinate origin and axes, wall thicknesses, hole sizes and positions, clearances, and which features must remain connected. Ask for a small set of named parameters rather than unexplained constants.
- Generate a minimal model. Start with a base primitive and add one feature at a time. Use readable modules and parameters so a mismatch can be traced to a specific part of the script.
- Compile and preview. Check the OpenSCAD console. Separate syntax or evaluation errors from a model that compiles but is spatially wrong.
- Run the final render and export. Test the output path you actually need—such as STL, DXF, or SVG—rather than treating preview as the final gate. For a printable model, confirm the STL is non-empty and inspect the mesh for missing, disconnected, or non-manifold geometry.
- Inspect views and dimensions. Compare top, side, and isometric views against the written requirements. Visual inspection can expose orientation or missing-feature problems, but it may not establish exact dimensions or printability.
- Give the model specific failure evidence. Provide the exact console error or a measurable mismatch, such as “the 8 mm hole is 3 mm off center,” and request a focused edit. “Fix everything” gives no clear target for the next iteration.
- Repeat the checks and review manually. A successful compile and export show that those gates passed; they do not prove that every design requirement is met or that the part is functionally safe.
One open-source OpenSCAD-generation project illustrates this kind of staged feedback: it separates compilation, STL export, and vision checks, then returns targeted failures for another generation attempt. It is an example workflow, not evidence that automated checks guarantee a correct result. OpenSCAD generation project.

What should you check when choosing a generation workflow?
A one-shot prompt, an iterative agent, and a solver-aided approach are better compared by what they check than by a blanket claim that one is always more accurate. The available evidence does not establish a universal current-model leaderboard or an OpenSCAD-specific failure rate.

Benchmark results also need context.
