OpenPlanter is an AI-assisted investigation project with a desktop app and a Python command-line interface. Its documentation says it can work across mixed datasets, resolve entities, and present relationships with links to source material. Those are project-described capabilities, not independently verified results. It is best evaluated as a workflow for organizing investigative material—not as proof that a suspected connection is real.
What OpenPlanter is—and what it is meant to do
The OpenPlanter project describes the software as a “recursive-language-model investigation agent with a desktop GUI and terminal interface.” Its stated workflow is to ingest heterogeneous datasets, identify entities that may refer to the same people or organizations, and surface possible connections with supporting evidence. The project README names corporate registries, campaign-finance records, lobbying disclosures, and government contracts as examples of material an investigator might analyze.

Those examples should not be read as a promise of built-in connectors to every registry or public-record system. The documentation describes file and web tools; it does not establish that OpenPlanter provides turnkey access to each named source. Investigators may need to obtain, prepare, and place relevant records within the workspace themselves.

Gather and inspect material
The README lists tools for workspace file operations, including listing, searching, mapping, reading, and editing files. It also describes shell execution, web search, and URL fetching. These tools are intended to let the agent work with local material as well as retrieve information from the web, depending on configuration.

Ask a question and examine candidate links
The project describes recursive mode as the default and says the agent can delegate work such as entity resolution, cross-dataset linking, and building evidence chains. In a documented scenario, the user asks whether politicians receive donations from people who own shell companies. That is scripted demo language illustrating a possible investigation, not a query drawn from user research or a verified case outcome.
Review a graph and source documents
The desktop documentation describes a three-pane interface: a sidebar for sessions and provider/model settings, a chat pane that shows objectives and tool calls, and a knowledge graph of entities and relationships. It also describes interactive graph layouts and filters, a drawer containing rendered source documents, saved sessions, and a background wiki curator. The intended benefit is to move between a possible relationship and the material used to support it. The documentation does not independently establish the accuracy or completeness of those links.
Interfaces and setup options
| Option | What the project documents | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Python CLI | A command-line interface that can run independently, including a single headless task. | Useful for terminal-based workflows or automation; the repository is the place to confirm current requirements and commands. |
| Desktop app | A Tauri application with documented macOS DMG, Windows MSI, and Linux AppImage distribution formats. | Check the current release page for platform assets and version-specific installation details. |
| Docker | A documented container workflow that mounts a workspace directory. | Understand which host directory is mounted and what the process can read or change before using sensitive records. |
The README lists OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Cerebras, and Ollama as model-provider options. It presents Ollama as the local-model option and also names Exa for web search and Voyage for embeddings as additional service keys. Provider availability, defaults, and setup instructions can change, so consult the current README and the relevant provider documentation before configuring a deployment.
Workspace access, data handling, and investigator control
File and shell tools make workspace scope an important operational choice. Before running an investigation, decide which directory the agent should access, what files it may edit, and whether shell execution is appropriate for the task. The Docker workflow’s mounted workspace is one explicit boundary to inspect; a desktop or CLI setup also needs a deliberate understanding of its permissions.

Choosing a local model does not by itself establish that all information stays on the investigator’s device. OpenPlanter also documents hosted model providers and separate external services for search and embeddings. Which data is sent beyond the local machine depends on the selected configuration and how the workflow uses those services. The project material reviewed here does not establish a third-party security assessment, privacy guarantee, or complete data-flow analysis.
What the demonstrations do—and do not—show
The project’s demo scenarios illustrate proposed user journeys. They include fictional counts, risk scores, outcomes, and time-saving claims; those figures are not independent measurements of OpenPlanter’s performance. A scenario describing 14,203 entities or a score of 87/100, for example, should not be treated as a benchmark or as evidence that the software found a real-world connection.
Rank #4
No named, independently verified statistic for accuracy, speed, usability, or investigative effectiveness is established in the reviewed project material. A graph and evidence chain can help organize leads, but they do not replace checking the underlying documents, confirming identity matches, and distinguishing a documented fact from an inference.

The official releases page shows v0.1.1 as its latest visible release and labels it “released March 6”; the visible release line does not specify a year. That partial date is not enough to infer a full release date or ongoing maintenance. Check the repository for the latest assets, installation instructions, dependency requirements, and provider defaults before adopting the software.
Best Value
For evaluation, try a bounded task with records you are authorized to use. Check whether each suggested relationship can be traced to source documents, whether the interface makes uncertainty visible, and whether the configured model and external services fit your organization’s data-handling requirements. Those checks are especially important because independent accuracy, privacy, security, and usability evaluations were not established in the reviewed materials.
