OpenInstaDM: A Free, Open-Source ManyChat Alternative for Instagram Comment-to-DM

OpenInstaDM is an open-source, self-hosted tool for Instagram keyword comment-to-DM campaigns. Here’s what it does, what setup requires, and what “free” really means.

If you use the creator prompt “Comment LINK and I’ll DM it to you,” OpenInstaDM is an open-source, self-hosted way to automate that focused workflow: a matching comment can trigger a private message with a resource or link. The project also describes an optional public comment reply. It may suit creators looking for a free ManyChat alternative, but it is not presented as a feature-for-feature replacement for a larger marketing platform—and self-hosting means you take on setup and upkeep.

What OpenInstaDM does

OpenInstaDM is an Instagram comment-to-DM automation project. You configure a campaign with a keyword, such as LINK. When someone comments with a matching keyword, the system can send them a private reply. A public reply is an optional part of the workflow, according to the project repository.

Anish, the author of the project’s article, describes its scope plainly: “The point isn’t to compete with every feature of a large marketing platform.” That distinction matters: OpenInstaDM is aimed at one creator use case, not a complete ManyChat clone.

How the comment-to-DM workflow works

The repository describes a webhook-and-worker setup rather than a single process handling everything. In outline:

  1. You create a campaign and specify the keyword it should match.
  2. Meta sends a comment event to the app through a webhook.
  3. The app checks whether the comment matches a campaign and places a job in a queue.
  4. A separate worker sends the private reply and, if enabled, publishes a public reply.

The repository says the web app and worker share PostgreSQL and Redis, with BullMQ using Redis for queued jobs. The web app needs to receive webhook events; the worker needs to be running to send messages. These are the project’s documented design details, not independently verified operating results.

Features the project lists

The repository and author’s article describe capabilities beyond the basic keyword trigger. They are project-listed features, not independent test findings.

  • Keyword matching and optional public comment replies.
  • Tracked links and click statistics, with up to two link buttons.
  • Username personalization and an optional follow gate.
  • Multiple professional Instagram accounts, workspaces, team permissions, and campaign templates.
  • An inbox, delivery logs, and per-account rate limiting.

What “free” means when you self-host

The project makes its code available as open source, and some hosting providers may offer free tiers. That does not guarantee that running it will always cost nothing. Hosting, database and Redis capacity, traffic, and ongoing maintenance can involve costs depending on where and how you deploy it. The repository names Vercel and Railway in its quick-start guidance and mentions other infrastructure options; it does not establish a guaranteed zero-cost deployment or a current total cost.

Self-hosting also shifts operational responsibility to you. You choose and configure the infrastructure, keep the app and worker available, and maintain the connected services. Open source offers room to inspect or customize the code, but it does not remove that work.

What you need before setting it up

The repository lists an Instagram Business or Creator account, a Meta developer app, and infrastructure for the web app, worker, PostgreSQL, and Redis as prerequisites. It identifies Meta app configuration as the part of setup that takes time.

  • Instagram account: A Business or Creator account, as specified by the repository.
  • Meta developer configuration: A developer app and the required API permissions and webhook setup.
  • Running services: The web app, worker, PostgreSQL database, and Redis queue must be deployed and kept working.

The project says it uses Meta’s official Instagram API and webhook flow. That description has not been independently audited here for compliance or current platform behavior. Check the project’s setup instructions and Meta’s current requirements before relying on it for a live account.

OpenInstaDM versus a hosted marketing platform

Consideration OpenInstaDM Larger hosted platform
Scope Focused on comment-triggered Instagram messages and related campaign tools, as described by the project. May cover a broader set of marketing workflows; the project does not claim feature parity.
Ownership and customization Open-source code can be inspected and customized; you operate the deployment. The provider operates the service; customization depends on the provider’s product.
Setup Requires professional-account and Meta developer configuration plus app infrastructure. Typically uses the provider’s hosted setup, but specifics depend on the service and plan.
Operations You are responsible for the web app, worker, database, queue, and their maintenance. The provider manages the hosted service; the exact division of responsibility varies.
Price comparison No guaranteed total deployment cost is established by the project materials. A current ManyChat price comparison is not established here.

Who should consider it

OpenInstaDM is worth considering if your main need is to send a resource or link after a keyword comment, and you are comfortable configuring Meta’s developer tools and maintaining a small self-hosted stack. It is a less natural fit if you want a managed service, do not want to operate infrastructure, or need a broad set of marketing automation features in one product.

The project materials do not establish conversion gains, savings, uptime, adoption, or independently measured performance. Treat it as a self-hosted tool with a documented feature set, and evaluate it against your account requirements and operating capacity rather than assuming results.
