Choose Hermes Agent if you prefer a CLI-led workflow and want documented command-approval, file-write-safety, and isolation options. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on your channels, tools, deployment, and threat model.
How do OpenClaw and Hermes Agent differ?
Both projects can connect an AI agent to tools and messaging channels, but they emphasize different operating workflows. OpenClaw’s official documentation centers on a Gateway, with onboarding for provider setup, agent configuration, plugins, channels, and remote Gateway options. Hermes documents an interactive command-line interface alongside a gateway for messaging.

| Decision area | OpenClaw | Hermes Agent | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday workflow | Gateway-centered setup and operation; onboarding covers providers, agents, plugins, channels, and remote Gateway options. (OpenClaw documentation) | Interactive CLI plus a messaging gateway. The repository lists Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, and email entry points. (Hermes Agent repository) | Confirm that your intended channels and preferred way of interacting are supported in the version you plan to install. |
| Extending the agent | Documents plugins and a broad protocol surface. Its comparison page describes ClawHub publishing, moderation, audits, and per-release trust verdicts; pending or stale scans may still allow installation with a warning. (OpenClaw comparison page) | Documents tools and toolsets, skills, and an MCP catalog. (Hermes Agent project materials) | Evaluate the particular integration or skill, its maintenance, and its trust information. A large catalog is not itself a security measure. |
| Security controls | Sandboxing is off by default, and native plugins run in-process rather than in a sandbox. The project says its comparison concerns configured architectures, not security certification. (OpenClaw comparison page) | Documents user authorization, dangerous-command approval, file-write safeguards, container-isolation options, and cross-session isolation. Approval modes are configurable. (Hermes Agent security page) | Compare the controls you will actually enable and the boundaries in your deployment—not just the features listed in documentation. |
| Moving between projects | Onboarding documents importing Hermes state, with staged handling for configuration, credentials, workspace files, memory, and skills. (OpenClaw onboarding reference) | The repository documents hermes claw migrate for importing from OpenClaw, with a dry-run option and a list of supported migration items. (Hermes Agent repository) |
Review the migration report, imported secrets, and destination settings; do not assume a byte-for-byte transfer. |
| License and project governance | The project states that it is MIT-licensed, governed by the OpenClaw Foundation, and funded by donations; it says it has no paid tier or hosted service. (OpenClaw comparison page) | The repository lists an MIT license and identifies Nous Research as the project builder. (Hermes Agent repository) | The software license does not determine the terms or price of your model provider, hosting, or messaging services. |
| Cost | The project says model and channel traffic goes to providers selected by the operator; it does not sell a hosted service, paid tier, or token. (OpenClaw comparison page) | Supports selected providers and optional services, but the project materials cited here do not establish one universal total cost. (Hermes Agent repository) | Estimate your own model usage, hosting, and channel costs using current provider terms and an equivalent workload. |
Which one should you run?
Choose OpenClaw when the Gateway model fits
- You want a Gateway-centered system and the provider, agent, plugin, channel, or remote-Gateway configuration it documents.
- You need a particular plugin or protocol and have checked its maintenance and trust details.
- You are willing to deliberately configure and review the security posture rather than relying on defaults.
Choose Hermes Agent when the CLI-led workflow fits
- You want an interactive CLI for agent work, with a gateway available for messaging.
- Your required messaging entry points are supported by the current release.
- You value configurable command approvals and file-write safeguards, and will also consider the deployment’s isolation boundaries.
Decide by workflow, not feature count
Write down the channels you will use, the tools or integrations you need, where the agent will run, and what it should be allowed to read or change. Then verify those requirements in the current documentation and configure the controls that match your threat model. A catalog count, advisory count, or feature checklist cannot substitute for that review. OpenClaw explicitly cautions that repository advisory counts are disclosure records, not a comparative safety score.
How should you compare their security?
Do not describe either project as simply “safe by default.” Security depends on the version, configuration, deployment boundary, and the permissions granted to the agent.

OpenClaw: plan to configure sandboxing
OpenClaw’s comparison page states that sandboxing is off by default and that native plugins run in-process without sandboxing. It frames its comparison as one between configured architectures, not as a certification of either product. If you choose OpenClaw, identify the sandboxing and other hardening settings you intend to use, then verify them against the documentation for your installed version.
Hermes Agent: approval modes are configurable
Hermes documents three dangerous-command approval modes. In smart mode, an auxiliary language model assesses risk, denies dangerous commands, and escalates uncertain cases. manual prompts on dangerous commands; off disables approval checks, which the security page equates with YOLO behavior. The same page describes file-write deny rules and an optional safe-root limit.

Hermes also warns that command-deny rules are not a complete operating-system capability sandbox. Approval prompts and file-write policies are controls to evaluate, not proof that a process cannot exceed its intended permissions. Consider the container-isolation and cross-session-isolation options documented by Hermes as part of the deployment, and assess what the agent can access at the operating-system level.
What the security documentation does—and does not—establish
The OpenClaw comparison page quotes Hermes Agent’s security policy as saying, “The only security boundary against an adversarial LLM is the operating system.” That is a statement attributed to Hermes’ policy, not an independent audit finding. OpenClaw also says the snapshots in its comparison were development snapshots and advises checking installed versions and configuration. The page’s source review was refreshed August 27, 2026; treat its version-specific observations as a snapshot, not a permanent guarantee.

Can you migrate between OpenClaw and Hermes Agent?
Both projects document migration paths, which makes the choice more reversible, but the documented import payloads and review steps differ. Migration should be treated as a selective transfer to inspect, not a promise of perfect portability.
Importing Hermes state into OpenClaw
OpenClaw’s onboarding reference describes an import flow that stages configuration, credentials, workspace files, memory, and skills before promotion. Its onboarding also offers guided and classic setup paths, asks whether setup may discover available AI access, and verifies a selected model route with a real completion before saving the verified route and credential. Review staged files and credentials before promoting imported state.

Importing OpenClaw state into Hermes Agent
The Hermes repository documents hermes claw migrate and a dry-run option. Its listed import items include persona and context files, memories, user skills, messaging settings, allowlist patterns, selected API keys, and audio assets. Review the dry-run output, migration report, secrets, and destination configuration before using the result.
What about setup, platforms, and ongoing cost?
Setup and platform checks
Hermes documents hermes as its interactive CLI, hermes gateway for messaging, and hermes setup for its setup wizard. The repository says native Windows is unsupported and directs Windows users to WSL2. Check the current quickstart for supported systems and installation instructions before installing; these details can change.
Best Value
OpenClaw’s onboarding is organized around provider setup, agent configuration, plugins, channels, and Gateway choices. Its documentation describes a guided path as well as a classic path. Follow the current onboarding for the release you install rather than assuming a prior setup flow still applies.

Budget for the deployment you will actually use
Neither project’s license makes model inference, hosting, or third-party channel traffic automatically free. OpenClaw says operators select the providers to which model and channel traffic is sent; Hermes supports selected providers and optional services. Compare current provider and hosting terms against the same expected workload. The available project materials do not establish a reliable universal claim that one agent is cheaper.
Is there a performance winner?
No equivalent-workload benchmark is established in the project materials covered here, so there is no source-backed speed or performance winner. Results would depend on the chosen model, tools, configuration, provider, and deployment. Test the specific workflow you care about rather than inferring performance from feature lists.
What should you verify before installing?
- Check current release notes and documentation for supported channels, integrations, operating systems, and setup steps.
- Decide which files, commands, credentials, and networked services the agent needs to access; configure controls accordingly.
- For OpenClaw, verify the sandboxing and plugin behavior in your configuration. For Hermes, verify approval mode, file-write policy, and isolation options.
- If migrating, run the documented dry-run or staged import, inspect the report and secrets, and test the destination configuration before relying on it.
- Calculate model, hosting, and channel costs for your own expected usage; do not treat the software license as a total-cost estimate.
Project documentation and setup instructions can change quickly. The comparison and security references discussed here were accessed October 7, 2026; confirm current versions and settings before making a deployment decision.
