Training: are business prompts used to train models?
OpenAI says inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Enterprise, Business, Edu, Healthcare, Teachers, and its API platform are not used to train or improve models by default. That is a default for the listed business surfaces, not a statement about every OpenAI consumer product or every possible configuration. OpenAI documents an API data-sharing opt-in, so organizations should check whether anyone has enabled it and what their agreement says. Anthropic’s Enterprise security and privacy FAQ states that it does not train on customer data on any surface. Its commercial-product policy distinguishes Claude for Work and the API from Free, Pro, and Max consumer accounts. API retention: what happens to prompts and outputs?

The shared 30-day figure is not a universal guarantee that every copy or type of state disappears on day 30. OpenAI describes a maximum default period for abuse-monitoring logs, with stated exceptions; Anthropic describes backend deletion of standard API inputs and outputs, also with exceptions. For OpenAI, inspect the current endpoint and feature table for the workflow in question: its documentation warns that some application state may be retained even with ZDR enabled.
Saved conversations: how chat products differ from APIs
API requests and saved chat histories are different product surfaces. A conversation service may retain chats so users can return to them, while API data policies describe request and response handling. The available OpenAI sources do not establish one cross-product history default or a complete minimum-retention matrix, so confirm the setting and contract for the specific ChatGPT business plan.

Anthropic says commercial products that save conversations retain chats and coding sessions to provide continuity. Users can delete conversations: they disappear from history immediately, and backend systems delete them within 30 days. Anthropic says data flagged by automated systems as a Usage Policy violation can be retained for up to 2 years for inputs and outputs and up to 7 years for trust-and-safety classification scores. Data associated with feedback submissions and bug reports is retained for 5 years. Claude Enterprise retention settings and project behavior
Anthropic’s Enterprise controls let administrators set custom retention periods for chats and projects, with a 30-day minimum; the provider treats a month as 30 days. The clock is based on last activity. Project retention takes precedence for chats stored inside projects, and projects otherwise remain indefinitely by default according to Anthropic’s current help article. A chat-only setting therefore may not have the effect an administrator expects for project-contained conversations.

Claude.ai and Cowork are stateful products, according to Anthropic’s Enterprise FAQ; the cited ZDR option applies to approved Platform API and Claude Code customers, not these chat surfaces. Enterprise retention configuration, rather than assuming ZDR, is the relevant control for those saved conversations. Security controls: compare the capabilities that matter
Published feature names are not enough to establish equivalent protection: availability and scope can vary by plan, geography, and service. OpenAI’s business data documentation lists AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 or higher in transit, optional Enterprise Key Management, SSO and MFA, role controls, audit APIs, and residency options for eligible customers. Anthropic’s Enterprise FAQ lists SAML single sign-on, SCIM provisioning, role-based access, managed plugin marketplaces, and custom retention. The materials cited here do not establish a directly comparable current inventory of Anthropic assurance certifications or equivalent details for encryption, key management, residency, and audit export. That is a gap in the cited comparison, not evidence that those capabilities are absent. Request current documentation and confirm the plan-specific scope.

- Encryption and key control: confirm encryption in transit and at rest, key ownership options, and which services they cover.
- Identity and access: check SSO, MFA, provisioning, roles, and administrator privileges against your identity system.
- Auditability: confirm which events are logged, how logs can be exported, and whether retention and integrations meet governance requirements.
- Data location: distinguish storage residency from processing location, and verify regional availability for the exact service.
- Assurance: compare current certifications and examination reports by scope, date, and covered product rather than relying on similarly named badges.
How to make a procurement comparison
- Fix the product surface. Record the exact service, edition, API endpoint or chat product, and plan; do not compare consumer accounts with enterprise commitments.
- Map the data. List the data classes users will submit, whether prompts or outputs may become application state, and which teams can access them.
- Set a deletion target. Specify the required deadline and ask how safety monitoring, legal obligations, policy enforcement, feedback, and project storage affect it.
- Confirm special controls in writing. Verify eligibility and approval for ZDR or modified monitoring, coverage of the exact endpoint or feature, and the current DPA and service-specific terms.
- Check governance requirements. Confirm regional storage and processing, identity integrations, audit export, certifications, and administrator responsibilities against your requirements.
- Validate the configured workflow. Before production use, test access and deletion with non-sensitive data and document the result; do not assume a policy statement proves your configuration works as intended.
Ask each provider the same questions and preserve answers against the specific plan and contract. If logs must feed existing DLP, SIEM, or eDiscovery workflows, confirm supported integrations and available event fields directly in the relevant service documentation.
