As OpenAI began a phased rollout in September 2026, users reported failures and connection problems—but available reports do not show how common those issues are. Two separate open-source projects, OpenDots and Open Dot, offer different ways to build or run similar agents, with more setup and upkeep than OpenAI’s managed service.
What are OpenAI dots?
OpenAI announced dots on September 29, 2026, describing them as persistent agents that work in the background using their own cloud computer and connected apps. The company says dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra and can be contacted through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. It also says its plugin ecosystem connects to more than 4,000 apps; that figure is OpenAI’s description, not an independently audited count. OpenAI’s announcement describes permissions and review controls for consequential actions, while warning that dots can make mistakes.
The product was entering a phased rollout, not becoming available to everyone at once. OpenAI said rollout would start with Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education, and Healthcare users could try a beta if their workspace administrator enabled it. The announcement said the first dot was included in eligible plans, with an allowance for deeper work. Availability and plan terms can change, so check OpenAI’s current product information before relying on these details.
OpenAI says a dot’s cloud computer is separate from a user’s computer unless the user connects it. That separation and the announced permission controls are safeguards described by the company, not a guarantee that errors or risks are eliminated.

What technical problems have users reported?
In an October 7, 2026 report, The Register’s Thomas Claburn described user reports of failed tasks, connection and cloud-connectivity problems, dots disappearing, and refusals that appeared related to abuse prevention. The article also noted similar concerns in the OpenAI Developer Community. OpenAI did not respond to the publication’s request for comment about dots usage.
The OpenAI Developer Community’s dots topic listing showed discussions with activity dated October 7 and 8, 2026. Examples included trouble connecting calls across mobile, web, and desktop; connection errors and call failures; approval behavior; and a reported Gmail-trigger regression. This is a changing list of user-generated topics, not an official incident report or representative sample.

These reports establish that some users discussed problems, not how widespread they were or what caused them. The available coverage and community listings provide no verified failure rate, named incident-rate statistic, or independent reliability benchmark. They should not be read as proof that dots are broadly unreliable—or that the reported issues are isolated.
Which open-source projects are alternatives?
OpenDots and Open Dot are different projects, despite their similar names. One is a self-hosted developer template; the other is a Mac desktop app. Neither is simply an open-source copy of OpenAI’s managed service.

CopilotKit announced OpenDots on October 1, 2026 as an open-source template for building a persistent-agent workspace. Its description includes an agent with browser, file, and terminal access; pages and documents; Slack interaction; scheduled recurring tasks; and saved preferences. It describes approval before saving drafts and says computer access is off by default. These are the project team’s stated features, not independently tested capabilities.
OpenDots is built on CopilotKit, AG-UI, and CopilotKit Intelligence. It is intended for developers to clone, adapt, and connect to their own tools, and CopilotKit calls it an “early, single-owner starting point.” It is therefore better understood as a base for development than as a mature, ready-to-use substitute for OpenAI dots. The project says it accepts OpenAI-compatible models.

Open Dot: a Mac app with optional cloud support
Open Dot’s repository describes a separate open-source Mac desktop app. Its README documents use of an OpenAI API key or models accessed through OpenRouter, plus connections to Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Notion, GitHub, and other apps through Composio. The project says it asks for approval before sending, posting, paying, or changing connected data. Those statements describe the project’s design and setup, not an independent security audit. The repository also says Open Dot is not affiliated with OpenAI.
There is an important scheduling limitation: routines and triggers run only while the app is open, and scheduled work can be skipped while the Mac is asleep. The README describes E2B as an optional cloud computer for continued operation while the Mac sleeps. The reviewed setup documentation supports OpenRouter access; it does not establish that local-model execution is currently available.

How do the three options compare?
| Option | Deployment and maintenance | Models and app connections | Controls and operating limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI dots | Managed cloud product, in phased rollout according to OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 announcement. | OpenAI says dots use GPT-6 Astra and connect to more than 4,000 apps through its plugin ecosystem; both are company descriptions. | OpenAI describes permission settings and review of consequential actions. The announcement warns that dots can make mistakes. |
| OpenDots | Self-hosted developer template; users must adapt and maintain their deployment. | Accepts OpenAI-compatible models. Developers connect tools and workflows through its AG-UI-based approach. | Project description includes draft approval and computer access off by default. It is characterized by its creator as an early starting point. |
| Open Dot | Mac desktop app, with optional E2B cloud-computer setup. | README documents OpenAI API and OpenRouter model access, with Composio integrations. | Project says certain consequential actions require approval. Routines and triggers require the app to be open; work may be skipped while the Mac sleeps. |
The feature descriptions above come from each product’s own announcement or documentation; they are not a common benchmark. The reviewed sources do not provide controlled side-by-side tests of reliability, safety, task success, or total cost.
What does “open source” mean for cost and control?
Open-source code does not automatically make an agent free to run. Model usage can incur token charges, and projects may depend on API keys or third-party services. Open Dot’s documented setup may involve OpenAI or OpenRouter model access, Composio integrations, and optional E2B cloud computing. OpenDots shifts deployment and maintenance work to whoever hosts and adapts it. The Register notes that model-token costs remain even when software is open source.
The choice is mainly about where you want responsibility to sit. OpenAI manages its cloud product, subject to its rollout and plan terms. OpenDots gives developers a starting point they can host and modify. Open Dot offers a Mac-based setup, with optional cloud support but a limitation when the computer sleeps. More control can mean more configuration, maintenance, and responsibility for checking permissions and connected services.
Prathit Joshi, Open Dot’s creator, told The Register: “I enjoy building and shipping tools for developers, especially tools that can support use cases that closed model companies aren’t necessarily incentivized to support, like allowing open source models.” That reflects the project’s motivation; it does not establish that every model or deployment mode is already supported.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose OpenAI dots if you want a managed product and your account or organization has access. Check current availability and plan terms, and review consequential actions.
- Consider OpenDots if you are a developer who wants a self-hosted template to adapt, and you are prepared to connect tools and maintain the deployment.
- Consider Open Dot if you want to experiment with a Mac desktop app and are comfortable configuring model access and integrations. Account for the requirement that the app remain open for routines and triggers unless you configure the optional cloud-computer service.
For all three, evaluate the integrations you actually need, what happens when an agent takes an action, ongoing model and service costs, and who will maintain the setup. Current sources do not establish which option is most reliable or least expensive for a particular workload.
