Neither product is established as universally faster or better: the useful comparison is how each fits your project, tools, review process, and usage needs.
How Codex and Cursor differ
Both products support agentic software work, but their official descriptions emphasize different ways of working. OpenAI describes Codex as an agent for writing, reviewing, and shipping code, and its Codex app focuses on coordinating tasks, reviewing diffs, and using isolated Git worktrees. Cursor describes itself as a coding agent for building software, with its workflow integrated into its editor. See OpenAI’s Codex app overview and Cursor’s documentation.
| What to compare | Codex | Cursor |
|---|---|---|
| Where you work | Multiple surfaces: desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, web, and cloud workflows, subject to account and workspace eligibility. The app emphasizes task coordination and diff review. | An AI coding workflow integrated into Cursor’s editor, with agent features for understanding, planning, building, debugging, and reviewing code. |
| Delegation and isolation | The app supports multiple task threads and Git worktrees; Codex Cloud runs tasks in OpenAI-managed environments for eligible accounts. | Documentation covers agent, cloud-agent, and integration workflows. Check current plan and setup for exact availability. |
| Editor and integrations | Includes a VS Code-compatible IDE extension; OpenAI says supported VS Code forks can use it. | Documentation lists connections and workflows involving services such as GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, JetBrains, Slack, and Linear. Verify support for your exact setup. |
Which workflow fits your project?
Choose Cursor when the editor is your home base
Cursor is the more natural candidate if you want an AI agent embedded in the editor where you already read and change code. Its documented workflow spans code understanding, planning, implementation, bug fixing, review, and integrations. That does not guarantee a better result; it means the product’s center of gravity is the editor.
Choose Codex when work spans tasks and surfaces
Codex is worth evaluating if you want to hand off separate tasks, review their diffs, and keep work isolated in Git worktrees, or if you move between desktop, CLI, IDE, web, and cloud workflows. Local Codex workflows run on your device; cloud tasks run in OpenAI-managed environments, with cloud availability subject to account eligibility and workspace settings. Details are in OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance.

Consider your team’s existing tools and controls
Compatibility can matter more than feature lists. Check whether the extension or integrations work with your editor, code host, and collaboration tools, then review environment access, data terms, administrative controls, and organizational policies. OpenAI documents workspace controls and distinct local and cloud workflows; Cursor describes team features including centralized billing and administration and team-wide privacy-mode enforcement. Current plan details are on OpenAI’s Codex pricing page and Cursor’s models and pricing page.
Compare usage, not just subscription prices
Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, but usage limits vary by plan. OpenAI says local and cloud chats share plan usage, with plan-specific limits; check your account dashboard for current remaining usage. Cursor’s pricing page lists separate usage pools for Cursor Models and Other Models, and model choice affects how quickly included use is consumed. A subscription headline alone does not show how a team’s actual workload will be billed.

Can you use Codex inside Cursor?
Yes, OpenAI’s current Help Center notice lists the Codex IDE extension in Cursor as an option. It also says OpenAI plans to wind down its contract providing models to Cursor. The notice proposes November 12, 2026 as the transition period, but says the final date is not confirmed and Cursor could end access sooner. Treat that date as proposed, not a finalized shutdown date, and check OpenAI’s current notice for changes.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a fair choice
- Pick a representative task. Use a real issue from a project you understand, with enough scope to expose how each tool handles context, implementation, and review.
- Run the task in each workflow. Keep the starting code, requirements, and verification expectations as similar as practical.
- Review the resulting diffs. Compare correctness, scope, readability, and how much manual correction or verification the changes need.
- Record practical costs. Note latency, interruptions, setup friction, and billed or included usage for the models and task types you actually use.
- Check policy fit. For company code, confirm the relevant data, environment, and admin settings before adopting either workflow.
This is a project-level evaluation, not a claim that one agent wins on a benchmark. OpenAI reported a 90% median completion-time reduction for new Codex cloud tasks and follow-ups after container caching in 2025; that is an OpenAI-reported infrastructure result, not an independent Codex-versus-Cursor comparison. See OpenAI’s Codex upgrades announcement.
