Before opening a repository in Codex, check the effective approval policy, sandbox permissions, project trust, network access, and any organization-managed requirements. These controls answer different questions: approval determines when Codex pauses for your review; the sandbox limits what its commands can access. Neither one alone makes repository access risk-free.
Codex settings and labels can vary by operating system and surface. The configuration guide documents the underlying controls and configuration sources, but it does not establish one universal desktop-app menu path. See OpenAI’s Codex configuration reference for current details.

Start by checking which configuration actually applies
Do not assume the value you see in one settings screen is the whole configuration. Codex can combine built-in defaults, system configuration, managed requirements, user settings, project settings, profiles, and command-line overrides. The precedence rules determine which value takes effect; organization policy may constrain what can be selected.
Recommended Free Tools
The configuration guide identifies these common locations:
#1 Best Overall
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
~/.codex/config.tomlfor user-level configuration..codex/config.tomlfor project or subfolder configuration.
Project configuration is conditional: it applies only when the project is trusted. The guide documents an IDE-extension route to the user config file—gear icon > Codex Settings > Open config.toml—but that is not a verified universal route for the desktop app. Check the current product documentation and the labels available in your installed version rather than assuming the same menus exist on every platform. What project trust changes
When a project is untrusted, Codex skips project-scoped .codex/ configuration layers, including project-local configuration, hooks, and rules. User- and system-level configuration still loads. Trust therefore controls whether repository-provided Codex instructions and behavior are applied; it is not itself a substitute for setting the run’s approval policy or sandbox boundary.
Review approval and sandboxing together
Approval policy controls when Codex asks before running an action. Sandbox mode controls the filesystem and network capabilities available to commands. OpenAI summarizes the distinction: “Approvals and sandboxing work together.” OpenAI, “Running Codex safely at OpenAI,” May 8, 2026

- Feature: Material is four strong magnets in white plastic house
- Function: it is a key to lock and unlock all kinds of security hooks & devices for preventing your stuffs in safe status
- To Use:Easy to be used on your security hook, spiderwrap, security box and so on ,You put it on the correct positon when two tabs are in line ,then you slide it, so you lock or unlock your all items in safe situation.
- Intended Purpose:It is suitable for any specific security hook like 6"7"8"peg&slatwall hook, also perfect tool as a key like alpha key, spiderwrap security remover key, magnet key.
An approval prompt is not a filesystem boundary: after a command is approved, its access is determined by the active sandbox and any other effective constraints. Conversely, a restrictive sandbox does not tell you when Codex will pause for review. Consider both settings before a run.
Approval policy: when Codex asks
approval_policy = "on-request" is a documented common setting. It governs when Codex must ask before performing an action, including actions that need to go outside the sandbox. Review the documented behavior for on-request and never before choosing; do not treat approval policy as a control over what an already approved command can access. Codex configuration reference
Sandbox mode: what commands can reach
The configuration guide names three built-in permission profiles. Their names are not a replacement for checking the actual filesystem and network scope on your platform:

OpenAI’s Windows engineering account explains the default approach this way: “Codex runs with the permissions of a real user by default, meaning it can do everything the user can do.” The same article describes sandbox constraints for its Windows implementation, including broad reads with writes restricted to the workspace; details differ by platform and sandbox implementation, so do not assume that exact behavior applies to macOS or Linux. OpenAI, “Building a safe, effective sandbox to enable Codex on Windows”
For native Windows use, the configuration guide recommends elevated sandbox mode; unelevated mode is a fallback when administrative permissions are unavailable or setup fails. Treat those as Windows-specific setup guidance, not a universal setting for every operating system. Codex configuration reference
Decide separately whether commands need network access
Command network access is a sandbox decision, not just a convenience toggle. It can support workflows such as retrieving dependencies, but OpenAI identifies increased exposure to prompt injection, credential leaks, and code with license restrictions as risks to weigh. Check whether the repository’s tasks genuinely require external access, and review what the active sandbox permits. OpenAI, “Running Codex safely at OpenAI,” May 8, 2026

Do not confuse network access with web search
The configuration guide documents web-search modes separately: cached (the default), indexed, live, and disabled. A web-search mode is not a complete statement of whether commands can reach external services. Review both controls where available: one concerns the search feature, the other command execution’s network boundary. Codex configuration reference
Check for organization-managed requirements
In a managed environment, organization requirements can constrain or override local choices. If a setting is unavailable, cannot be changed, or behaves differently from your local file, check with your administrator rather than assuming the local value is effective. OpenAI describes managed configuration and security practices across its desktop, CLI, and IDE local surfaces; availability and administration depend on the organization and product surface. OpenAI, “Running Codex safely at OpenAI,” May 8, 2026
That article also describes OpenTelemetry events and Compliance Platform activity logs for eligible enterprise and education customers. It does not establish that the same logging setup is available or enabled for every Codex user, so verify your organization’s own configuration if audit records matter.

Choose a restrictive starting point when appropriate
OpenAI Help Center guidance names sandbox_mode = "read-only" and approval_policy = "on-request" as a restrictive alternative to the retired untrusted approval policy. The article says untrusted is no longer supported in specified recent versions; check its version guidance before relying on that statement for a particular installation. OpenAI Help Center guidance on Codex
Do not confuse that retired approval-policy value with the separate project setting trust_level = "untrusted". OpenAI says the project-level setting remains supported; it determines whether project-scoped configuration is loaded, rather than serving as the approval policy. OpenAI Help Center guidance on Codex
Quick Recap
Pre-access review checklist
- Identify the effective configuration sources, including user, project, system, managed, profile, and command-line settings that apply.
- Confirm whether the repository is trusted and whether its
.codex/configuration, hooks, and rules will load. - Check the approval policy and understand when Codex will pause for review.
- Check the sandbox’s real read, write, and network scope for your operating system and Codex surface.
- Decide whether command network access is necessary; review web-search mode separately.
- If your organization manages Codex, confirm which local values are permitted and what audit logging is configured.
