Open-World RPGs That Took Years to Find Their Audience

Kingdom Come: Deliverance became a cult classic and spawned a sequel, and No Man's Sky kept growing through years of updates. Here is what the evidence supports for each game, and where it stops.

Few open-world RPGs have a well-documented story of a slow climb to popularity. The clearest cases are Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which later earned cult status and a sequel, and No Man’s Sky, which kept growing through years of post-launch updates. Fallout: New Vegas is a useful related example of a cult RPG, but the evidence available for it describes its design, not a delayed audience. Which of these fits depends on what you mean by “found an audience,” so the sections below separate those meanings and test each game against them.

What “found an audience” can actually mean

The phrase covers several different outcomes, and a game can meet one without meeting the others:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Later cult status. A game that was modestly received at release is later remembered fondly and talked about by a dedicated community.
  • A growing community over time. Players keep arriving years after launch, and the game’s reputation rises with them.
  • A sequel’s success. The original gets credit for a follow-up that reached a much larger audience. This says something about the franchise, not necessarily about the first game’s sales.
  • Sustained post-launch development. The developer keeps adding content, so the game is effectively reinvented long after its release date.

Public evidence for each of these is uneven. Most of what follows relies on interviews and developer statements rather than audited player or sales data, and the article labels that difference as it goes.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance: cult status, then a sequel

Warhorse’s historical RPG began as a Kickstarter project in 2014 and was released in 2018. It is set in medieval Bohemia and is built around a grounded, demanding style of role-playing. British GQ’s profile of the game, published February 13, 2026, describes it as a cult classic and traces how its reputation developed alongside the franchise’s later prominence.

  • Contains bestiary, magic items, downtime events, and corruption paths to enrich gameplay and surprise players.

Creative director Prokop Jirsa explains the design choice in that interview. He says the team wanted a “true historical RPG,” and he argues that the game’s difficulty is part of its appeal: “Friction makes you feel like you earned something.” That is a first-party account of intent. It is not evidence of how the original game’s sales changed over time.

The sequel is where the audience case is strongest. British GQ reports that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has sold over five million copies. That figure belongs to the sequel and should not be applied to the 2018 original. The same article notes that the sequel received nominations for Best RPG, Best Narrative, and Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025.

No Man’s Sky: sustained reinvention rather than a late rescue

Hello Games released No Man’s Sky in 2016. The studio’s official press page says the game continues to receive regular major updates that add stars, planets, biomes, creatures, and stories. This supports a picture of a product that has kept changing for years. It does not establish whether the game was unwanted at launch.

Director Sean Murray’s account in a WIRED interview makes the same point from the creator’s side. He recalled expecting a smaller, more experimental game and said the scale of mainstream attention surprised him: “I actually thought we were making something quite niche and experimental, y’know? In some ways, I still do?” He also describes wanting to expand the game after release and communicate more closely with players. These are the developer’s recollections of expectations. They are not independent measurements of player counts or sales.

  • COOPERATIVE OR SOLO PLAY: Designed for 1–4 players, allowing you to adventure solo or team up to face dragons, uncover conspiracies, and shape the fate of Skyrim together.

  • DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.

For that reason, the most accurate description of No Man’s Sky is sustained post-launch attention and reinvention. A story about a year when it “found” its audience would need data that the reviewed sources do not provide.

Fallout: New Vegas: a cult RPG, but not a delayed breakthrough

Fallout: New Vegas belongs in any discussion of cult RPGs because of its factions, its reputation-driven role-playing, and its world. The Guardian’s 2010 interview with lead designer Josh Sawyer covers the Mojave’s competing factions, how player reputation works, and the game’s post-post-apocalyptic society. It is a strong source on design.

In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable

It is not a source on popularity over time. The interview predates any later sales or community trajectory, so it cannot show that New Vegas took years to find its audience. Treat it as an example of a cult RPG’s design, and as a point of comparison, rather than as a delayed-success case.

Which one fits your interest

  • If you want a historical RPG with demanding systems, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the best-documented cult example, and its sequel shows where the franchise’s audience went.
  • If you want a game that has changed substantially since launch, No Man’s Sky is the strongest case for long-term development, though its audience history is described by its developer rather than measured independently.
  • If you want a faction-driven, reputation-based RPG, Fallout: New Vegas is a well-regarded cult title, but it does not have a documented delayed-success story.
