Open Windows Terminal as Admin from File Explorer in Windows 11

Windows 11 offers a documented Ctrl+Shift elevated-launch gesture; a community registry recipe can add a separate Open in Terminal (Admin) entry to File Explorer.

If you only need an elevated Windows Terminal session, try holding Ctrl+Shift while choosing Open Terminal Here. The Windows Terminal project documents that gesture in its v1.18.1421.0 release notes. It launches elevated but does not add a separate menu label. To add an explicit Open in Terminal (Admin) entry, use the community registry tutorial below—with care, because it changes the Windows registry.

Choose between an elevated launch and a separate menu item

Option What it does Trade-off
Ctrl+Shift with Open Terminal Here Requests an elevated Windows Terminal session from the existing context-menu action. Documented in the Terminal project’s v1.18.1421.0 release notes; it does not create a separately labeled “(Admin)” item. If the gesture is unavailable, check your installed Terminal version.
Registry-created Open in Terminal (Admin) Adds a distinct administrator entry for directories and folder backgrounds. The community recipe also offers a default-profile option and shell submenu choices. Requires an administrator account and a registry modification. It is a community-authored recipe, not a Microsoft configuration guide.
Launch Terminal as administrator separately Opens Terminal elevated, after which you navigate to the target directory. The Terminal project FAQ describes an administrator launch route through the taskbar’s nested right-click menu; unlike the context-menu methods, it does not start from the selected folder.

Add a separate “Open in Terminal (Admin)” item

The detailed instructions and registry file are in Brink’s Windows 11 Forum tutorial. The recipe creates registry entries under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshellOpenWTHereAsAdmin, adds an elevation shield and menu label, then defines commands to launch Terminal in the selected directory. Its default-profile command uses PowerShell to start wt.exe with the RunAs verb; the submenu can target Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell profiles.

  1. Read the current tutorial and inspect its registry file. The registry file changes system configuration; do not merge it without checking what it contains and confirming it matches the tutorial’s current instructions.
  2. Use the tutorial’s add option while signed in with administrator access. The tutorial says administrator access is required to add, remove, and use the entry.
  3. Open File Explorer and right-click the target folder or a folder background. In Windows 11, choose Show more options, then select the added administrator entry. The tutorial says the item appears in this classic menu by default.

The recipe is for directories and folder backgrounds. The tutorial also describes extending its submenu with profiles such as PowerShell 7 or Ubuntu when those profiles are installed. The menu and profile behavior can depend on your Terminal build, distribution, and available profiles.

Why “Open in Terminal” may be missing

Microsoft’s distribution comparison lists the built-in Open in Terminal context-menu integration for packaged and preinstallation-kit distributions, but not for unpackaged or portable distributions. If the standard entry is absent, check how Windows Terminal was installed before troubleshooting File Explorer. Microsoft also notes that unpackaged distributions do not receive automatic updates. See Windows Terminal distribution types.

The built-in Open in Terminal action opens the normal Terminal session, according to the community tutorial; it is not the same as the separately created elevated entry. The documented Ctrl+Shift gesture is tied to the Terminal v1.18.1421.0 release notes, so availability should not be assumed across every version or distribution.

What administrator mode changes in Windows 11

Windows 11 22H2 made Windows Terminal the default host for console windows, including Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell. Microsoft Support documents how to switch back to Windows Console Host: use Settings > System > Advanced system settings to change the console host, or change the startup setting in Windows Terminal. This affects which host opens console applications; it is separate from whether a Terminal session is elevated. See Microsoft’s console host guidance.
