For most personal study projects, a hosted AI assistant is the easier place to start: the provider handles the inference infrastructure, so you can focus on the work. An open-weight model is a better fit when learning to deploy or customize a model—or keeping inference on infrastructure you control—is part of the goal. That control brings setup, hardware, security, maintenance, and troubleshooting responsibilities.
Neither option is automatically more accurate or private. The right choice depends on the study task, the model or service, and where your prompts are processed.

What “open-weight” means—and what it does not
An open-weight model makes its trained parameters available. That does not necessarily make its training data, full training code, or development process available. Google Cloud distinguishes open models from fully open-source AI models and notes that details such as the original dataset, model architecture, and training code may not be provided (Google Cloud documentation).
Weights and service are separate layers. You might download a model and run it on your computer, deploy it on infrastructure you manage, or access it through a third-party host. The last option is still hosted processing: the service provider handles the model request under its own data practices. GitHub Copilot’s model-hosting documentation provides an example of hosted open-weight models (GitHub documentation).

How the options compare for a study project
| Decision | Open-weight model on local or controlled infrastructure | Hosted AI assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Obtain the weights, install and configure an inference runtime, and check that your hardware is compatible. Support may come from the runtime or community rather than the model publisher. | Usually available through an existing web or app interface; the provider manages inference infrastructure. |
| Data path | With a genuinely self-hosted setup, prompts can stay on infrastructure you control. Check the runtime, telemetry, extensions, and connected services. | Prompts are processed by the assistant provider under that product’s terms, settings, and retention practices. |
| Customization and permissions | Some models can be customized or fine-tuned, but permitted uses depend on the exact license and any usage policy. | Tools and integrations may be available, but you generally have less control over the underlying model and deployment. Features can depend on the current product and plan. |
| Resources and costs | Needs vary by model and configuration. Memory and compute, storage, electricity, hosting, maintenance, and setup time can all matter. | No inference hardware to manage yourself, but price and usage limits depend on the provider and plan. |
| Study-task quality | Judge the specific model with representative questions, source checks, and a correction workflow; published benchmarks do not guarantee usefulness for your task. | Judge the actual assistant and plan as well. Integrated tools may help, but availability changes. |
There is no independent, current head-to-head evaluation here that establishes which option works better for personal study. Likewise, without a defined workload and comparable current plan and hosting prices, there is no supported universal cost break-even point.
Choose based on what you want to learn and control
Choose a hosted assistant for lower friction
A hosted assistant is a practical starting point if you want to ask questions, summarize readings, or revise notes without managing an inference stack. Before entering sensitive material, review the service’s terms, account controls, and retention practices. A setting that prevents training use does not necessarily mean the provider never processes or retains a conversation.
Try an open-weight model when deployment is part of the project
A local or self-managed model makes sense if experimenting with inference, customization, or deployment is itself a learning objective, or if you want to keep inference on infrastructure you control. Check the exact model’s hardware guidance first. If you use a managed host, the model may be open-weight, but your prompts still go through that host.

“Open-weight” also does not settle whether a model is free to use for every purpose. Read the specific license and use policy. For example, OpenAI states that gpt-oss is licensed under Apache 2.0 and is also subject to its usage policy (OpenAI’s gpt-oss documentation).
What local gpt-oss deployment entails
OpenAI lists gpt-oss-20b and gpt-oss-120b and links to guides for running them with Ollama, vLLM, and LM Studio; its help page also lists llama.cpp as a compatible inference stack. These are self-managed deployments. OpenAI says it does not provide hands-on implementation or debugging support for self-hosted or third-party-hosted setups (OpenAI open models; OpenAI gpt-oss documentation).
OpenAI’s 2025 announcement says gpt-oss-20b requires 16 GB of memory and gpt-oss-120b can run within 80 GB (OpenAI, 2025). These are vendor deployment claims, not guarantees of useful speed on every device. Memory alone does not establish performance, and requirements can depend on the model configuration and runtime. Treat the figures as model-specific guidance, not a reason to buy new hardware before checking your existing system.

OpenAI publishes MMLU scores of 90.0 for gpt-oss-120b, 85.3 for gpt-oss-20b, 93.4 for o3, and 93.0 for o4-mini on its open-models page (OpenAI, 2026). These are vendor-published benchmark results, not an independent comparison of study-project performance; they cannot determine which option will explain your reading, cite sources reliably, or correct an error better for your needs.

Local inference can reduce exposure to a third-party assistant provider, but it does not guarantee privacy by itself. The runtime, plugins, telemetry, network connections, and any hosting partner affect the data path. OpenAI says it does not receive or process data sent to gpt-oss models running on infrastructure you control unless you share it with OpenAI or use a managed hosting partner. That statement applies to OpenAI’s gpt-oss arrangements, not every model or runtime (OpenAI gpt-oss documentation).
For a hosted-service example, OpenAI says turning off ChatGPT’s “Improve the model for everyone” setting stops new conversations from being used to train its models, but those conversations may remain in chat history. Temporary chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. These controls are specific to ChatGPT and should not be assumed to apply to other services (OpenAI ChatGPT data controls).

Evaluate either option with the same small study workflow
Try low-risk sample material first, using questions whose answers you can verify. A short, repeatable comparison can reveal practical differences without treating fluency as proof:
- Ask each option to summarize the same short reading.
- Ask it to explain one concept at two different levels.
- Ask a question that requires sources, then check the cited material yourself.
- Identify an error or weakness and ask for a revision; assess whether the correction actually fixes it.
This is a suggested evaluation method, not a report of testing. Keep the task and source material the same, and judge usefulness against your own study needs rather than a general benchmark score.
