Playwright is a browser automation library, so it suits capture that is part of an application or script. Install the Playwright package and its browser using the instructions for your chosen language in the official screenshot guide. The following Node.js example captures a page to a PNG file:

How do I capture a full-page screenshot?
Set fullPage: true when taking the screenshot:

How do I capture one element or get image bytes?
Use a locator’s screenshot method to target an element, or omit the path and retain the returned bytes for further processing. For example:

Use shot-scraper from a shell or CI workflow
shot-scraper’s release 0.14 guide documents installation with pip, installation of its required browser, and a URL-to-image command:

shot-scraper https://datasette.io/The command captures the URL to an image file. This route avoids writing browser-control code for a basic capture, while still requiring the CLI and browser on the machine that runs it.
Repeat captures with GitHub Actions
The same guide describes a workflow using a shots.yml configuration and GitHub Actions: install the CLI and browser dependencies, capture the configured screenshots, then commit the generated images to a repository. Its example uses Python 3.10 and caches Playwright browser files. Those are details of that documented workflow, not a guarantee about current runner configuration or syntax. Check the live project documentation before adapting it, especially if CI images or action versions have changed.

Run a self-hosted HTTP screenshot service with ShotAPI

Keep captures useful and repeatable
A screenshot is an image of a rendered browser state, not a guarantee that every page element has loaded or will look identical on every run. For previews and automated output, make the rendering conditions explicit:
- Set the viewport. Responsive layouts can change substantially with screen width and height.
- Wait for the content you need. A page-load event does not necessarily mean client-rendered or lazy-loaded content is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or use an appropriate delay when needed.
- Account for lazy loading. Some images load only after scrolling or interaction. Check that the capture workflow actually triggers the content your preview must include.
- Keep the state consistent. Authentication, cookies, locale, time-dependent content and user-specific data can change the image. Use suitable test data and browser context settings.
- Choose output scope deliberately. Full-page, element-only and viewport captures serve different preview needs and have different output dimensions.
- Test the failure path. A timeout, blocked page or missing selector should be handled by the calling application rather than silently stored as a valid preview.
These are workflow considerations, not measured performance advice: the cited material does not provide a comparative latency benchmark for the tools.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The saved image is blank or incomplete
Confirm the URL is reachable from the runner, the browser is installed, and the page has reached the state you intend to capture. If content is rendered after navigation, wait for a page-specific selector or suitable delay. For lazy-loaded sections, verify that the capture process loads them rather than assuming a normal navigation does so.
An element screenshot fails
Check that the CSS selector matches the intended element and that it becomes visible before capture. If the page conditionally inserts the element, wait for that condition; if the selector changed, update it to match the current page.
Local capture works, but CI fails
Install the browser and dependencies in the CI environment, not only on your workstation. For shot-scraper, the documented release workflow explicitly installs its CLI and browser dependencies. Verify current runner and workflow syntax against the live guide because the cited PDF is for release 0.14.
The screenshot differs between runs
Compare viewport and page state, then check whether the page contains dynamic content, delayed rendering, cookie state or user-specific information. Use a stable test URL and wait for the relevant content rather than relying on a fixed assumption about when every page is ready.
Which approach fits your project?
- Use Playwright when capture is one step in a coded browser workflow, or when you need page, element, full-page or buffer output.
- Use shot-scraper when a straightforward command or repository-oriented recurring capture is the main goal.
- Use ShotAPI when you want to run an HTTP endpoint yourself and accept the work of operating its browser stack.
