Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A practical open-source setup can combine ModSecurity as a web application firewall (WAF) engine, OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS) as its general-purpose attack rules, and CrowdSec for log- and request-based detection with separate remediation options. They do different jobs: start in detection-only mode, inspect what gets flagged on your site, and tune before enabling blocking or challenges.
What each tool does
These projects are complementary components, not three interchangeable WAFs. Choose based on what you need to observe and what action you want to take when activity looks suspicious.

| Tool | Role | Useful for | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| ModSecurity | Cross-platform WAF engine with HTTP(S) visibility, a rule language, logging, and access control. | Inspecting web requests and applying rules at a supported server or proxy integration. | Compatibility with your server and connector, build requirements, traffic visibility, audit logging, and tuning effort. |
| OWASP CRS | Generic attack-detection rules for ModSecurity and compatible WAF engines. | Detecting common web-application attack patterns, including SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and local file inclusion. | Engine compatibility, needed coverage, update process, false-positive handling, and tuning workload. |
| CrowdSec | Analyzes logs and HTTP requests; detection and remediation can be separate components. | Using observed behavior to trigger enforcement through an integration such as a firewall, reverse proxy, or CDN. | Available log sources, enforcement integrations, deployment topology, community-feature privacy and operations, and impact on legitimate users and crawlers. |
How ModSecurity and OWASP CRS fit together
ModSecurity is the engine; CRS is a ruleset that supplies generic detection policies. Installing the engine alone does not define which attack patterns to look for, so a common arrangement is to use ModSecurity with CRS, provided the chosen engine and deployment are compatible.
OWASP lists SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and local file inclusion among CRS coverage categories. Its stated aim of reducing false alerts is not a measured guarantee for a particular application, and coverage categories do not establish a blocking rate. Application-specific inputs and normal traffic can still require rule tuning.

How CrowdSec approaches suspicious traffic
CrowdSec describes a log- and HTTP-request-driven model in which analysis can be separated from enforcement. Depending on the deployment, remediation can be handled at a firewall, reverse proxy, or CDN. Its project also describes a community IP blocklist; assess the operational and privacy implications of community features for your environment before relying on them.
Bot challenges are one response, not a universal detector
CrowdSec describes a JavaScript proof-of-work challenge for requests considered suspicious. The stated intent is to impede headless browsers and scrapers while allowing verified crawlers such as Googlebot. This is a specific challenge feature, not proof that every bot will be identified or that every legitimate visitor will pass without friction. The project page does not provide comparative effectiveness measurements, so validate challenge behavior and crawler handling in your own deployment.

Choose by observation, action, and compatibility
Before installing, identify whether you need visibility into live HTTP transactions, analysis of server logs, or both. Then check where detection should run and how a decision will be enforced.

- Observation: Does the option inspect HTTP transactions, server logs, or both, and are those sources available in your architecture?
- Response: Do you need alerts, rule-based blocking, a challenge, or detection that delegates remediation to another component?
- Integration: Confirm support for the web server, proxy, container, or platform you already use, including connector and build requirements.
- Operations: Account for alert review, rule updates, log retention, and the work of tuning exceptions.
- User impact: Consider what a false positive, IP block, or challenge could mean for ordinary visitors, APIs, and legitimate crawlers.
The reviewed project pages do not establish an apples-to-apples winner for detection performance, bot-classification accuracy, false-positive rates, throughput, or resource cost. Compare candidates against your own request patterns and deployment constraints rather than assuming one is universally best.

Roll out detection before enforcement
ModSecurity’s installation guidance recommends beginning in detection-only mode, reviewing and tuning generated events, and enabling blocking only after that review. Its example configuration enables request-body inspection and response-body inspection; whether those settings suit your traffic and performance needs depends on the deployment.
- Install the engine and any compatible ruleset using the instructions for your server, connector, and version.
- Set
SecRuleEngine DetectionOnlyto observe matches without immediately enforcing blocks. - Review generated events against real site activity. Identify legitimate requests that trigger rules and tune where needed.
- Test the effect of any inspection settings and integrations in your environment, then enable blocking only when the reviewed behavior is acceptable.
- Keep logging useful for investigation, but avoid elevated debug-log levels unless needed: the installation guide warns that high debug logging can significantly affect performance.
Do not copy configuration snippets without checking the version-specific deployment documentation. Validate directives, traffic requirements, inspection choices, and expected load for the actual server or proxy.
Version information checked October 3, 2026
Project version pages are time-sensitive. On October 3, 2026, the ModSecurity project page listed versions 2.9.14 and 3.0.16 and gave July 2, 2026 as its latest release date; the OWASP CRS page listed version 4.29.0. Check the project pages for current values before choosing versions.
