Open-source replacements can remove subscription fees, but they do not automatically remove the work or costs behind a service. The five services and tools in the headline are not identified here, so it would be misleading to claim which apps replaced them, how well they matched, or how much money the change saved. What readers can assess is the trade: a self-hosted tool may give you more control while making you responsible for hosting, updates, backups, remote access, and recovery.
What can open-source software replace?
It depends on the subscription’s actual job. An open-source project is not necessarily a drop-in replacement, and “self-hosted” describes where software runs—not whether it includes every feature of a paid service or works with every device.

- Personal media playback: Jellyfin is a free software media system with installation guidance for desktop and server operating systems and container platforms. It may suit someone who wants to organize and play media they can lawfully access. It is not a substitute for a streaming service’s licensed catalog.
- RSS feeds: FreshRSS is a self-hosted feed aggregator. It can fit a workflow built around following RSS feeds, but it does not replace paid reporting or a general news subscription.
- Passwords: Bitwarden documents a self-hosted deployment path, but some features require a registered license file tied to a paid subscription. A self-hosted deployment therefore does not mean every paid feature becomes free.
- Files and collaboration: Nextcloud offers server-hosted services, but it requires a server stack. It should not be treated as a one-click equivalent to every cloud-storage or collaboration plan.
These are examples of the broader landscape, not claims about which tools were used in the five-subscription experiment.
What responsibility moves to you when you self-host?
A hosted subscription bundles software with some combination of infrastructure, maintenance, access, and support. Running the software yourself shifts at least part of that responsibility to you, or to a hosting provider you pay.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Hardware and storage: You need a machine or hosting environment that suits the workload, plus enough storage for your data. Media serving can depend on client devices, file formats, and whether video transcoding is needed; Jellyfin maintains separate guidance on hardware selection and acceleration.
- Updates and administration: You are responsible for keeping the server and applications maintained, and for understanding how changes affect your setup.
- Backups and recovery: A copy on the same server is not a robust backup against device failure or other loss. Decide how you will back up important data and restore it if something goes wrong.
- Remote access: Accessing a home server away from home involves a network design choice. Immich’s documentation describes VPN and domain-based approaches, and notes that the named VPN service Tailscale is paid. A self-hosted app can therefore still rely on a paid networking service, a domain, hardware, or hosting.
- Support and troubleshooting: The project’s documentation and community may help, but they are not automatically equivalent to a commercial service’s support arrangements.
How much server capacity do you need?
There is no universal minimum that applies to every self-hosted application. Requirements depend on the software and the work it performs. For example, the Nextcloud 35 Administration Manual specifies a minimum of 128 MB RAM per process and recommends 512 MB per process; it also says actual memory demand varies with users, apps, files, and activity. Those figures describe Nextcloud’s per-process requirements, not a general recommendation for the entire server or for other apps.
For media serving, consider the devices you will use, the formats they can play directly, and whether the server must transcode media. Jellyfin’s hardware guide covers selection and acceleration, but the right machine depends on the specific workload. Avoid buying hardware based only on a broad claim that self-hosting needs a particular amount of power.

Does cancelling the subscription mean the account or data disappears?
Do not assume that cancellation immediately deletes an account or preserves access indefinitely. Bitwarden says cancelling a paid subscription does not automatically delete the account; paid features end at the close of the current billing cycle. Other providers may use different terms, so check the service’s own cancellation policy, export options, and data-retention rules before cancelling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before switching, make sure you can export what you need, import it into the replacement, and still access essential data if setup takes longer than expected. The exact migration steps depend on the service and are not established for the unnamed subscriptions in this case.

Is self-hosting cheaper after hardware and electricity?
It can eliminate a particular recurring software charge, but that alone does not establish net savings. Depending on the setup, you may still pay for hardware, storage, electricity, a domain, networking, managed hosting, or backup services. The available information does not identify the subscriptions, replacement stack, equipment, usage, or costs in the headline, so it cannot support a savings total or a claim that the change paid for itself.
A useful comparison is to list the costs you actually incur and the services you would otherwise keep paying for. Count recurring expenses and one-time purchases separately; include maintenance time as a practical trade-off even if you do not assign it a dollar value.

How to judge whether a replacement fits before cancelling
- Write down what the paid service does for you. Include the everyday workflow and any features you rely on, rather than comparing names or broad categories.
- Check the replacement’s limits and licensing. Confirm which features are available in the edition and deployment you plan to use, and whether any depend on a paid license.
- Plan migration and access. Verify export and import options, device support, and how you will reach the service from outside your home if needed.
- Account for operations. Decide where it will run, who will apply updates, how backups and restores will work, and what you will do if the server is unavailable.
- Test the critical workflow before cancelling. Keep the old service available until you have confirmed that the new setup handles the tasks and data that matter to you.
- Read cancellation terms. Check when paid access ends, whether the account remains, and what happens to stored data.
Those checks distinguish a genuine fit from a project that is open-source in name but incomplete for your needs. The tools and workload determine whether the effort is worth taking on.
