An open-source Android storage tool can help you find large files, and some tools also offer cleanup features. But the available evidence does not verify that any app reliably freed 5GB of system space: the app, handset, Android version, cleanup steps, and before-and-after measurements behind that figure are not established. Treat 5GB as an unverified result, not a promise.
What is using all of your Android storage?
Start by separating two jobs: analysis shows how storage is being used; cleanup attempts to remove files or other data. A treemap or list of large folders can help you decide what to inspect, but it does not itself free space. Even a tool with deletion features cannot guarantee a particular amount: the result depends on what is on your device and what you choose to remove.

Android’s own storage reporting also has technical limits. The Android Open Source Project says Android 8.0 can use ext4 quota support for near-instant usage statistics when that support is available; otherwise, it falls back to manual calculations. Which open-source tools analyze storage, and which offer cleanup?

How to use a storage analyzer without deleting something important
- Scan the location you care about. Check whether the tool covers internal storage, external storage, or only selected public and media directories; scan coverage varies by app.
- Use the largest-file or folder view to investigate. An analyzer identifies where space appears to be used. It does not establish that a file is disposable.
- Review every deletion selection. Confirm what each item is and whether you have another copy before removing personal files. Do not assume an app can remove protected system data; that depends on the device and permissions.
- Check Android’s storage display afterward. Compare the same device’s reported usage before and after, allowing for the fact that Android’s statistics may use quota-backed reporting or manual calculation depending on support.
What would substantiate a reliable 5GB result?
A reproducible claim needs enough detail for another person to understand what was measured and what changed. At minimum, record:

- The exact app and version, phone model, and Android version.
- The starting storage measurement and where it came from.
- The cleanup actions taken, including what was selected and deleted.
- The same storage measurement after cleanup, with enough context to distinguish freed user files from changes in reported system or app usage.
Without that record, “freed 5GB of system space” is not independently verifiable. The tools described here can help locate storage use, and some offer cleanup functions, but their project descriptions do not establish that any one of them will safely reclaim 5GB on your device.
