It is designed for near memory: memory attached close to the host, rather than a rack-scale pool shared across systems. OMI is not a type of DIMM and is not synonymous with CXL.
What is Open Memory Interface (OMI)?
OMI carries memory transactions over a serial link from a host to a memory-side device, which can then connect to memory such as DDR4. Microchip’s 2019 technical paper calls OMI an industry standard and describes it as containing the memory-semantics subset of OpenCAPI 3.1. OpenCAPI’s March 2020 release announcement described its 3.1 transaction-layer architecture for memory-buffer development as built around OMI. Those documents establish the historical standards relationship; they do not establish the latest specification revision or current governance arrangements.

In Microchip’s example, a Smart Memory Controller (SMC) translates OMI transactions into DDR4 accesses. OMI therefore describes the host-to-memory-side connection, not the memory module itself. The term refers here to the hardware interface, not the unrelated Open Memory Initiative project.
What problem does OMI address?
A host processor has a limited number of package pins to connect memory. Microchip’s 2019 white paper presents OMI as a way to expose more memory channels while using fewer host-side signals per channel. The serial link also provides an abstraction between the host interface and downstream memory media.

In that paper’s comparison, an OMI channel uses roughly 75 signals plus power and ground, versus up to 300 for a traditional parallel DDR channel. Microchip says this can allow up to four times as many memory channels in the same package size. These are the vendor’s stated comparisons, not universal guarantees; an implementation’s channel count and performance depend on its host, controller, memory, and configuration.
How much bandwidth and latency can an OMI implementation deliver?
Microchip’s 2019 illustration uses DDR4-3200 and gives 25 GB/s per channel, or up to 100 GB/s across four OMI channels at an equivalent pin count. This is an example in the vendor’s paper, not a general OMI bandwidth promise. Actual throughput depends on the host, controller, memory devices, link rate, and system configuration.

A specific implementation is the Microchip SMC 1001 8x25G OMI-to-DDR4 controller. Its September 2020 product brief lists OMI link rates of 21.33, 23.46, or 25.6 Gbps and DDR4-2666, DDR4-2933, or DDR4-3200 support. The brief reports 12 ns round-trip latency, with less than 4 ns of incremental latency to first DRAM data access. Those latency figures describe that controller implementation, not OMI as a whole.

How does OMI differ from DDR, HBM, CXL, and Gen-Z?
These names describe different parts or uses of a memory system, so they are not interchangeable alternatives in every design. OMI is a serial host-to-memory-side interface; in the documented SMC example, the memory-side controller connects onward to DDR4. Microchip groups OMI with near-memory technologies and discusses far-memory pooling separately. CXL and Gen-Z appear in the broader interconnect context, but the available material does not provide a current, complete independent benchmark comparison across these technologies.

| Technology or term | How it relates to OMI |
|---|---|
| DDR | DDR is a memory interface and memory technology downstream of a controller. In Microchip’s example, the SMC translates OMI transactions to DDR4; OMI is not itself a DDR DIMM. |
| HBM | HBM is another near-memory approach. The cited IEEE 2021 abstract discusses OMI alongside DDR and HBM, but does not provide a current, complete performance comparison. |
| CXL | CXL is an adjacent interconnect in the broader memory and system-fabric context. OMI should not be treated as another name for CXL; the cited materials do not establish a direct, current performance ranking. |
| Gen-Z | Gen-Z is also discussed in the broader interconnect context. Microchip distinguishes near-memory attachment from far-memory pooling; the available sources do not supply a full current comparison of compatibility, capacity, or latency. |
For an actual system decision, compare the target use (near attachment or pooled far memory), supported media and capacity, host pin and package constraints, system latency, and compatibility with the host and controller. The label alone does not establish those design details.

Microchip’s SMC 1001 8x25G, part PM8597B-FEI, is a documented OMI-to-DDR4 controller example. It is a specialist server-design component, not a consumer PC RAM upgrade. Its published specifications are a dated product example and do not confirm current availability.

In 2020, OpenCAPI announced OMI host and device reference designs and engineering notes. An example repository, omi_device_ice, describes a laboratory FPGA design with two DDR4 memory ports and names a specific board and tool target. It is an example for engineering work, not evidence of a turnkey commercial platform. The latest specification revision, current certification arrangements, and present status of these artifacts are not established by the cited announcements and documents.
