A Next.js application on Cloudflare Workers can route background-removal requests to a separate container that runs ONNX inference. Cloudflare documents the Worker-to-container architecture, but that platform documentation does not establish that a particular ONNX model, runtime build, or project has been tested on it. The choice depends on the runtime and resource requirements of the actual inference workload—not on ONNX alone.
What this architecture puts where
In this split, the Worker handles the web-facing application and request routing; a container runs the inference service. Conceptually, a user submits an image through the application, the Worker forwards the relevant request to the container, and the application returns the result. That describes the division of responsibility, not a verified request path or implementation for a specific project.

Cloudflare describes Workers as able to control container instances. Its Containers documentation says containers can run applications that need resource-intensive compute, a full filesystem, or a Linux-like environment. Containers are available on the Workers Paid plan. These are reasons to consider the split, not proof that this workload requires a container.

Start by identifying the ONNX Runtime variant, execution provider, model, required operators, and runtime dependencies. Cloudflare Workers use a JavaScript and WebAssembly runtime with a subset of Node.js APIs. Workers support precompiled WebAssembly modules, but do not support threading. Those constraints are relevant when checking compatibility; they do not establish that every ONNX Runtime build will or will not run in a Worker.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
| Decision factor | Inference in the Worker | Inference in a container |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime compatibility | Check the specific ONNX Runtime build, model operators, and any required APIs against the Worker runtime. | Check that the image includes the runtime and system dependencies the inference service needs. |
| Filesystem or Linux requirements | Assess whether the workload can operate within the Worker environment and its supported APIs. | A documented fit when the application needs a full filesystem or Linux-like environment. |
| Compute requirements | Measure the real model and request workload before deciding it fits. | A documented option for resource-intensive applications; no model-specific capacity or performance figures are established here. |
| Operational shape | Fewer separate runtime components to manage, if the chosen runtime and model are compatible. | A separately deployed service with container image deployment and instance provisioning to account for. |
There is no established like-for-like benchmark here for latency, throughput, cost, memory use, model size, or accuracy. Measure those with the intended model, image inputs, and deployment configuration before choosing based on performance.
Choose the Next.js deployment path first
Cloudflare’s Next.js guide, last updated August 25, 2026, recommends vinext for new Next.js applications on Workers, while describing vinext as beta. Cloudflare’s OpenNext adapter documentation, also last updated August 25, 2026, says existing OpenNext applications with compatibility gaps can continue using the documented OpenNext path. The title alone does not identify the adapter, Next.js version, or whether the application is new or existing, so confirm the project’s build configuration before applying either guide.

If the project uses OpenNext, its setup guide specifies nodejs_compat and a compatibility date of 2024-09-23 or later; it also lists Wrangler 3.99.0 or later. These are requirements stated by that guide for its documented setup, and may change. Cloudflare’s OpenNext adapter documentation says Node.js middleware is not yet supported.

What container deployment entails
Cloudflare’s Containers getting-started guide describes Wrangler building and pushing the container image during deployment, while the Worker is uploaded and container instances are updated on Cloudflare’s network. The same guide cautions that requests to a container may fail for several minutes after the first deployment while provisioning completes. Treat that as an initial provisioning consideration, not as inference latency or a measurement of later requests.
- Confirm the application adapter. Identify whether the Next.js project follows Cloudflare’s vinext or OpenNext path, then follow the corresponding current setup guide.
- Validate the inference runtime. Record the ONNX Runtime package or build, execution provider, model, required operators, and system dependencies. Check these against the runtime chosen for inference rather than assuming generic WebAssembly support guarantees compatibility.
- Define the service boundary. Decide which component accepts the image, which invokes inference, and how the result returns to the application. The platform documentation establishes Worker-to-container control, but the specific route and payload contract must come from the application design.
- Deploy and allow provisioning. Use the applicable Cloudflare container deployment workflow and account for the documented possibility of container request failures for several minutes after the first deployment.
- Test the deployed path. Verify model loading, request and response handling, and failure behavior with the actual model and inputs. No project code, model measurements, or deployment test results are established by the platform documentation.
What remains project-specific
Platform documentation cannot establish the ONNX model’s license, the selected runtime or execution provider, container base image, image upload path, input dimensions, whether inference is synchronous, model loading or warm-up behavior, or the precise route between Next.js and the inference service. Those details need to be confirmed from the implementation and its deployment configuration. Until then, describe this as a documented architecture pattern rather than a tested background-removal deployment.
