What appeared on the Stockholm display?
The Register reported on 6 October 2026 that a reader named Alexander spotted a wall-mounted display showing a GNU GRUB boot menu where advertising would normally appear. The visible menu offered “UEFI” and “DMS” choices. The report does not name the station or display operator, and it does not independently document the observation. The Register’s report does not establish what “DMS” stands for; its suggested “Dank Material Shell” expansion is speculation.

Why would an advertising display show GRUB?
GNU GRUB is a boot loader: software that runs during startup and loads an operating-system kernel, transferring control to it. The GNU GRUB Manual, version 2.14, dated 8 January 2026, describes GRUB as responsible for “loading and transferring control to an operating system kernel software (such as Linux or GNU Mach).”

GRUB supports a menu for selecting an operating system as well as a command line; menu entries can also be edited. The screen alone does not reveal why startup stopped at that point.

What caused it—and does the menu mean the display is broken?
The incident report does not diagnose the cause or describe a verified repair. A GRUB menu by itself does not establish that the boot loader is corrupt, a drive has failed, an operating system is missing, or a particular configuration is in use. It could reflect different startup circumstances, and the available account does not distinguish among them.
The display’s make and model, its operating-system installation, whether it restarted successfully, and any service response are also unknown. The visible “UEFI” and “DMS” labels are choices on the reported menu, not enough information to identify the machine or explain its condition.

Would connecting a keyboard fix it?
GRUB can be operated with keyboard input, and the Register report mentions attaching a keyboard. But no source confirms that the station display accepts one, that anyone connected one, or that keyboard input would restore the advertising system. A keyboard could allow interaction with a menu on compatible hardware; it is not evidence of a repair.
