Online slots offered by gambling services typically involve a stake and potentially withdrawable winnings. Conventional social casino games imitate slots and other casino games but use virtual credits that cannot be cashed out or traded. Some sell extra credits or features, and a “social,” “free-to-play” or “sweepstakes” label does not by itself determine how a game works or whether it is lawful where you live.
How online slots and social casino games differ
| Question | Online slots | Conventional social casino games |
|---|---|---|
| What are they? | Slot-style games offered through an online gambling service. | Simulated slots and other casino games, commonly offered through apps, websites or social platforms. |
| What do players stake? | Typically money or something treated as money’s worth under applicable rules. | Often free virtual credits. Some games also sell additional credits or features. |
| Can winnings be withdrawn? | Real-money services may offer withdrawable winnings, subject to the service’s terms, account checks and applicable law. | In the closed-loop model described by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), credits cannot be redeemed for money or traded between players. |
| What should you check? | Whether the operator is licensed where you are, and what local law and the operator’s terms allow. | Whether credits or prizes can be redeemed or traded, what purchases provide, and how local law treats the offering. |
The ACCC describes social casino games as online versions of casino games such as slots, blackjack and roulette. They can resemble commercial gambling games without offering a way to withdraw winnings. The agency’s submission also notes that these games may be free to download and play, provide free credits, and sell extra credits or features. The crucial point is that a game’s appearance may tell you little about its payout rules.

Do social casino games use real money?
Often, players use virtual chips or credits rather than placing cash bets. But “free-to-play” does not necessarily mean that no real money is involved: a game may sell virtual credits, extra play or other features. The purchase itself does not establish that a player can cash out. Check what the credits buy and whether the terms permit redemption or player-to-player trading.

For conventional closed-loop games, credits stay within the game: they cannot be exchanged for cash or traded between players. Do not assume that every game marketed as social follows this arrangement. The game’s actual terms and any prize or redemption rules matter.

Can you cash out social casino winnings?
In the conventional social casino model, no: winnings are virtual credits for continued play, not cash available to withdraw. A product marketed as a “social” or “sweepstakes” casino may have different mechanics or offer prizes, so the label alone cannot answer the question. Look for explicit rules explaining whether credits or prizes can be redeemed, what conditions apply, and who is eligible.
The UK Gambling Commission says that, under its UK guidance, virtual items that can be converted into cash or traded for items of value attain real-world value. If gambling is offered using those items, the Commission says a licence is required in the same way as when casino chips can be exchanged for cash. This is UK guidance, not a universal legal test; other jurisdictions may apply different rules.

Are social casino games gambling?
There is no reliable answer based only on a product’s name or graphics. Whether an offering counts as gambling, and whether it is lawful, can depend on what players stake, whether prizes or virtual items have real-world value, whether winnings can be redeemed or traded, and the law where the player is located. Licensing requirements also vary by jurisdiction.

That is a Louisiana-specific warning, not a nationwide ruling. For a particular service, check its current terms and the relevant regulator’s licensing information in your location.

How to check a game before you play
- Identify what you stake. Check whether a spin uses money, purchased credits, free credits or another item, and whether the game assigns that item any value.
- Find the withdrawal and prize rules. Look for whether winnings can be cashed out, exchanged for goods, or redeemed in another way. If the rules do not clearly explain this, do not infer that a payout is available.
- Check whether credits can be traded or converted. A virtual balance that can be exchanged for cash or items of value may be treated differently from credits confined to one game.
- Review in-app purchases. Determine what a purchase buys, whether it is optional, and whether purchased credits have any redemption or transfer rights.
- Verify the operator and local rules. Check the operator’s licensing status with the regulator responsible for your location, rather than relying on the game’s marketing label.
These checks help distinguish a closed-loop entertainment game from a service involving stakes or redeemable value. They do not replace current terms or local legal advice. Australia’s ACMA warns that using an illegal online gambling service can put deposits and winnings at risk; it says such operators may withhold winnings, close or move a service, or continue taking funds without permission.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) considered ads for social casino apps that imitated slots but did not offer withdrawable real-world money or prizes. It found ads misleading where footage and claims such as “huge payouts,” “win massive prizes” and becoming a “billionaire overnight” implied that users could win cash or tangible prizes. The ruling was specific to the advertiser and complaint; it illustrates why promotional language should be checked against the actual reward rules.
