To reduce the risk of gaming scams and account takeovers, use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA), verify unexpected messages through official channels, and avoid suspicious links, QR codes, and downloads. These steps cannot prevent every attack, but they make common attempts harder to succeed.
Secure the accounts attackers can use to reach your games
1. Turn on MFA for gaming and email accounts
Enable MFA wherever it is available—not only on your gaming account, but also on the email account used to reset its password. CISA says any MFA is better than none. If a service offers a passkey or FIDO/WebAuthn authentication, consider using it: CISA identifies phishing-resistant authentication as stronger protection against fake sign-in sites. Options vary by platform, and a passkey or security key supported by one service may not work with another. Check the platform’s instructions and recovery options before choosing a method. CISA’s MFA guidance and PlayStation’s account security guidance explain their respective options.

2. Give every account its own password
Do not reuse your gaming password on email, social media, or other services. If one service is breached, reused credentials can put the others at risk. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords; PlayStation recommends this approach in its security best practices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Protect the email account that can reset your password
Your inbox may be the route to resetting a gaming account, so secure it with a unique password and MFA too. Review its recovery methods and account access so a stranger cannot easily use the email account to take control of your other accounts.

Spot and avoid gaming-specific lures
4. Treat unexpected account warnings as unverified
A message claiming that someone reported you, your account is about to be banned, or only an intermediary can restore access is not proof that your account is in trouble. Scammers may impersonate platform support in chat or send false-report messages designed to create urgency. Do not follow the message’s link or continue with a supposed support agent in a private chat. Open the platform’s app or type its official address yourself, then check your account and contact support through the service’s own help pages. Steam describes fake support contact as a phishing tactic in its account security recommendations.
5. Check the destination before signing in
Inspect the actual web address, not just the displayed name, logo, or link text. A lookalike domain can lead to a convincing fake sign-in page. For Steam, compare the login address with the official domains listed in Steam’s account security guidance. Do not enter your password to join a gaming group: legitimate groups do not need it.

6. Don’t scan unsolicited reward QR codes
A QR code promising a free voucher, gift card, in-game item, or exclusive offer can lead to a credential-stealing page or request personal information. Treat a code sent by a stranger like an untrusted link: do not scan it to claim a reward or sign in. Check offers through the game or platform’s official app or website instead. PlayStation’s security guidance warns about QR-code reward scams.
7. Verify tournament, beta, and friend invitations independently
Unexpected invitations to a tournament or beta can be used to lure players to fake login pages or downloads. If an invite appears to come from a friend, confirm through another channel before opening an attachment, installing software, or signing in. A friend’s account may have been compromised. The FBI advises independently verifying unsolicited messages and inspecting URLs in its spoofing and phishing guidance.

8. Avoid cheats, fake demos, and unverified gaming utilities
Malware can be disguised as cheats, pirated games, fake betas or demos, and tools presented as useful gaming software. Do not install files sent by strangers or download them from unofficial pages. Get games and utilities from official sources, and research unfamiliar applications before installing. Steam lists malicious downloads among the threats covered in its account security recommendations.
9. Never share credentials or buy and trade accounts
Do not give another player your password or verification code, even if they claim they need it to fix a report, add you to a group, or deliver an item. Sharing credentials gives someone else a way into the account. Avoid buying or trading accounts too: Steam says account sales are unsupported and transferred accounts may be locked. See Steam’s account seller and trader policy for its rules.

10. Limit unwanted contact and sign out of shared devices
Where a platform offers privacy controls, restrict messages or contact from players you do not know. On a shared console or computer, sign out when you finish so the next user cannot access your account. PlayStation covers messaging privacy, account sharing, and shared devices in its security best practices.

Quick Recap
What to do if you think your account was compromised
- Use official recovery. Open the platform’s support or account-recovery page independently; do not use a recovery link sent by a stranger. Steam’s account security recommendations explain its recovery guidance.
- Change exposed passwords. Start with the gaming account and any email account that shares its password or can reset it. Use new, unique passwords.
- End access you do not recognize. Review authorized devices or sessions and sign out of unfamiliar ones; use the option to sign out everywhere if the service provides it.
- Check connected accounts and devices. Review linked accounts and recovery settings. If you installed a suspicious file or extension, remove it and check the device for malware using trusted security tools.
- Report phishing where appropriate. The FBI’s phishing guidance advises reporting phishing to IC3.
