Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check after your password; Face ID can be the local way you approve a passkey, which replaces the password sign-in. They are different protections. Use the sign-in options your gaming platform supports, and secure the email and linked accounts that can also provide access.
What 2FA does—and what Face ID does
2FA adds a check after your password
With 2FA, you enter your password and then provide another proof, such as an authenticator code, an email or SMS code, or an approval prompt. A password thief who cannot complete that second step may be stopped from signing in. The Australian Cyber Security Centre describes multi-factor authentication as combining different kinds of proof, such as something you know and something you are. ACSC’s MFA guide recommends using MFA whenever possible, particularly for sensitive accounts.

Face ID may approve a passkey
A passkey is a password replacement, not simply another code after a password. On a compatible device, you may authorize its use with a face scan, fingerprint, or screen-lock PIN. PlayStation describes its passkeys this way and supports passkey sign-in across PS5, PS4, its website and app, and Remote Play for Mac, though some browser and device combinations may have compatibility issues. Face ID is therefore not a universal gaming-account feature or a one-time 2FA code; availability depends on the service and device. PlayStation’s passkey setup guidance explains its current options.

| Platform | Documented sign-in protections | Recovery detail |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games | Its options include the built-in Epic Authenticator number-match prompt, third-party authenticator apps, email codes, and SMS. Epic recommends authenticator apps as the strongest of these listed 2FA options; SMS availability may vary by region. | Recovery may try enabled authenticator or SMS checks, then email verification or password reset, and may request additional account information. |
| PlayStation | Authenticator-app or SMS 2-step verification, plus passkey sign-in as a separate password-replacement option. | It offers ten single-use backup codes. If you lack codes and access to the registered phone, PlayStation says you may need Support. |

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s gaming examples also include Steam, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but that list is illustrative rather than a complete, current feature matrix. Check each service’s settings for the methods it currently supports.

How to enable 2FA on a gaming account
- Secure the email first. Verify the email address on the gaming account, give the email account a unique password, and enable MFA on it if available. Keep its recovery details current.
- Open the platform’s official security settings. Sign in through the official website or app and look for account security, password and security, or 2-step verification. The precise labels and paths differ by platform.
- Choose a supported method. An authenticator app or platform prompt avoids relying solely on SMS delivery; email and SMS may still be offered. Follow the service’s own setup instructions and complete its test or confirmation step.
- Save recovery options before signing out. Record backup codes if offered and store them somewhere private and accessible if your phone is unavailable. Confirm how to transfer an authenticator before replacing or resetting its device.
- Review linked accounts. Remove connections you no longer use and secure the remaining accounts with unique passwords and MFA where available.
For Epic, the official method guide lists its supported choices. For PlayStation, account security support covers 2-step verification and backup codes. These platform instructions are more reliable than a single universal click path because account interfaces and options can change.
Secure linked accounts and avoid sign-in traps
A gaming account may be accessible through connected services as well as its direct password. Epic says linked Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook, or Google accounts can be used to access an Epic account. Secure those sign-ins too, and protect the associated email: a weak recovery route can undermine otherwise strong account settings. Epic also recommends unique passwords; a password manager can help generate and keep them distinct.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Never tell anyone a verification code or approve an unexpected sign-in prompt.

- Use a unique password for the gaming account and its email account.
- Review linked accounts and remove access you do not recognize or need.
Epic’s account security advice and the ACSC MFA guide both emphasize careful handling of authentication and account access.
What to do before losing or replacing your phone
Recovery is easiest to prepare while you can still sign in. Save backup codes where you can reach them without the phone, keep recovery email and phone details current, and transfer authenticator access or confirm the platform’s recovery procedure before wiping or replacing a device. Do not keep the only recovery method on the device it is meant to recover.
PlayStation says its ten backup codes are each usable once; its support page also describes email-based password reset and help for 2-step verification recovery. Epic’s recovery flow may ask for a configured authentication method, email verification, or additional account information when earlier options fail. If you lose access, use the platform’s official recovery route rather than responding to unsolicited offers of help. PlayStation account security and Epic account recovery provide their current procedures.
