The short answer as of October 9, 2026: reporting describes a 165Hz native panel with up to 185Hz capability in supported games, a BOE-made X4 light-emitting material with claimed efficiency and lifespan gains, and sub-1mm bezels taken from prototypes. None of these is a confirmed final retail specification yet.
Where the OnePlus 16 stands today
OnePlus’s China product page identifies the OnePlus 16 and accepts reservations for it (OnePlus China, OnePlus 16 launch page). OnePlus Community launch information dated October 6, 2026 gives a release date of October 12, 2026 (OnePlus Community, October 6, 2026). That date is for the China launch context described in these pages. Availability in other markets, pricing, and carrier or retailer listings had not been established in the sources reviewed, so do not assume the same timing elsewhere.

165Hz and 185Hz are two different claims
Most of the confusion around this phone comes from reading two numbers as one. Current reports describe two related but separate figures, and the difference matters for what you will actually see on screen.

A September 18, 2026 report from Gadgets 360 attributes a 165Hz global display rate to the tipster Digital Chat Station (Gadgets 360, September 18, 2026). OnePlus Community launch material also describes native 165Hz operation. Treat 165Hz as the broad, everyday refresh figure that these sources report, pending final specifications.

185Hz: a gaming-mode capability
The 185Hz figure is reported as applying in supported gaming scenarios, not across all content. The same Gadgets 360 report attributes a 185Hz gaming-mode claim to the tipster, and the OnePlus Community material describes 185Hz gaming alongside the native 165Hz figure. The sources do not list which games or apps qualify, so do not read 185Hz as a guaranteed setting for every title.
Hz and fps are not the same thing
Panel refresh rate is how many times per second the display can update. Frame rate is how many frames a game renders per second. A 185Hz panel gives the display headroom to show higher frame rates, but it does not make a game render 185 frames. A title limited by its engine, the GPU load, or the chipset will still deliver fewer frames, and the display will repeat or hold frames to match. Expect real gains only in games that both render at high frame rates and are allowed to use the high-refresh mode.
The BOE X4 material: what is claimed
A August 17, 2026 Notebookcheck report says OnePlus and BOE have reportedly developed a new X4 light-emitting material for the phone (Notebookcheck, August 17, 2026). The same report attributes two claims to the leak: lower power use than the previous X3 material, and twice its lifespan. The leak did not provide an exact resolution, peak brightness, or final refresh-rate figure.
The OnePlus 15 page is the closest official reference. It names the X3 panel material and describes that phone’s 165Hz display and gaming features (OnePlus China, OnePlus 15 page). That page establishes the predecessor baseline. It does not verify any X4 performance figure for the OnePlus 16.

Sub-1mm bezels: a prototype figure
A June 16, 2026 Android Authority report says Digital Chat Station claimed bezels under 1mm on all four sides (Android Authority, June 16, 2026). The report states that these figures came from engineering prototypes rather than final retail hardware and could change before release. Until OnePlus publishes final dimensions, treat sub-1mm bezels as an unconfirmed prototype measurement.
Will the OnePlus 16 display save battery?
Nothing published so far shows that it will. The only support is the Notebookcheck leak claim that the X4 material uses less power than X3. No independent test of the OnePlus 16 display’s power draw or battery life has been published in the sources reviewed. Actual battery impact will depend on the refresh rate used, the game and its frame rate, and brightness, so the answer can only come from measured results under comparable settings.
What to verify when final specifications arrive
- Refresh-rate modes: confirm whether 185Hz is a system option, a game-only mode, or both, and which menu controls it.
- Supported game list: check which titles run at the highest frame rate, not only which titles are listed as compatible.
- Resolution and peak brightness: these are not stated in any source reviewed so far.
- Measured power draw: compare battery drain at equal brightness, refresh rate, and frame rate against the OnePlus 15 or another gaming phone.
- Touch and motion response: measure input latency and motion smoothness in fast-action games, not only the advertised panel rate.
Use the same axes when comparing this screen with another gaming phone. No final OnePlus 16 values for these comparisons were available, so no winner can be named.

The rest, including 185Hz game behavior, BOE X4 efficiency, and bezel dimensions, remains leak-based until final specifications are published.
The Bottom Line
The OnePlus 16’s 185Hz figure is best read as a gaming-mode capability in supported titles, with 165Hz as the reported everyday rate. The BOE X4 efficiency and lifespan claims and the sub-1mm bezels are leak-based and should be treated as unconfirmed. The screen could be a strong gaming display, but nothing published so far establishes that it will redefine gaming phone screens.
