One-click purchasing cuts down on checkout by reusing account or payment details a shopper has already saved. It does not always mean a tap instantly places an order: depending on the merchant and payment service, the flow may still require sign-in, consent, an order review, a final confirmation, or extra authentication.
How one-click purchasing works
The basic idea is to avoid asking shoppers to re-enter information for every purchase. In the historical Amazon 1-Click description recorded in a patent, a shopper first completes a standard order. For later orders, the site refers to shipping and billing details stored in the shopper’s account instead of asking them to fill out the order form again. The described settings included a shipping address, shipping method, and payment information, and could be changed, activated, or turned off. Patent record

Modern checkout services can move some of the process to an account provider or use a token associated with a saved payment method. The shopper still needs to understand what is being ordered, which details are being shared, and when the purchase becomes final.

Details saved in a merchant account
The merchant uses information the shopper previously saved to that merchant account. This is the straightforward stored-details pattern described in the historical patent record. The shopper avoids retyping shipping and payment information, though the merchant’s design determines what review or confirmation remains.

Account-provider express checkout
Amazon Pay’s documented Buy Now flow uses information held in a shopper’s Amazon account on a participating third-party website or app. The buyer signs in, consents to share information with the merchant, reviews and can edit address, payment, shipping, and cart details on a hosted page, and then places the order. Amazon Pay’s developer documentation says, “The buyer provides consent to share their information with the merchant.” A multi-factor authentication challenge may also appear. Payment-provider choice at the end of checkout
Not every account-based payment option is an express purchase button. In Amazon Pay’s documented end-of-checkout placement, the shopper first enters order details on the merchant site, then goes to the payment provider to choose a payment instrument, review the order, and complete payment. Embedded sign-in and an express button
Buy with Prime guidance distinguishes a sign-in experience embedded in the merchant’s existing checkout from an express button. In the embedded flow, shoppers can use the merchant’s payment methods. The express-button flow uses Amazon-account shipping and payment details and requires Amazon Pay. These are different integrations, not interchangeable names for the same checkout. Saved-card tokens: another route to fewer steps
Some systems let shoppers opt in to saving a card for later. Amazon Payment Services describes a “Remember Me” choice during checkout: after a successful transaction, the system generates a customer-specific token for future transactions. Its example of a later payment still asks the shopper for a CVV, and the service says customers can manage saved cards. This is the vendor’s description of its implementation, not an independent security assessment. Amazon Payment Services saved-card documentation

A token-based flow is distinct from a shopper signing in to a broader account provider. When comparing options, check who stores or tokenizes payment details and how the shopper can view or remove saved information.
How to compare two checkout options
“One click” is a label, not a reliable count of taps or a guarantee that a purchase happens immediately. To understand a specific checkout, compare the actual steps and handoffs:

- Steps before the order is placed: Does the shopper need to sign in, consent, review, or confirm?
- Order review: Where can the shopper check the total, cart contents, shipping method, address, and delivery details?
- Data sharing: Does the shopper authorize an account provider to share information with the merchant?
- Authentication: Can the checkout ask for an additional identity check, such as multi-factor authentication?
- Payment information: Does the merchant use its own saved account details, or does a payment provider hold or tokenize a payment method?
- Control afterward: Where can shoppers manage or remove saved addresses and payment methods?
What to check before confirming a purchase
Fewer form fields do not remove the need to check the order. Before the final confirmation, verify the cart, total, delivery address, shipping method, and payment choice. If an account provider is involved, pay attention to the consent screen and the information being shared. For recurring services or subscriptions, check whether the order starts a subscription and how its terms and cancellation controls are presented.

Does one-click checkout improve sales?
Reducing repeated data entry is the mechanism behind these flows, but the available evidence here does not establish a directly attributable statistic for their effect on conversion or sales. A specific percentage or revenue estimate should not be treated as a general fact without a clearly identified source and measurement context.
