Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Neither on-premises AI infrastructure nor cloud GPUs are universally cheaper. Cloud shifts much of the expense to usage-based, location- and configuration-dependent charges; on-premises shifts it toward upfront hardware and ongoing facility costs. Compare the full cost of completing the same useful workload, at the capacity and service levels you need—not a cloud GPU’s hourly rate against a server’s purchase price.
What costs belong in a fair comparison?
Start with the full system and service, not the accelerator in isolation. Google Cloud notes that GPUs add cost to the machine type and that its GPU pricing page excludes VM instance, disk, networking, and some other charges. Its rates also vary by region and purchase arrangement. For owned infrastructure, the purchase price is only one part of the cost: power delivery, cooling, space, storage, networking, maintenance, and staffing may all matter.

| Cost or constraint | Cloud GPUs | On-premises GPUs |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | GPU charges plus the host machine type; check the provider’s exclusions, applicable license or image costs, and billing terms. | Purchase or lease the accelerator system and host equipment. A comparable current purchase quote is not established here. |
| Supporting infrastructure | Include storage, networking, the VM, and other billable resources not included in a GPU-only rate. | Include storage, networking, rack and power delivery, cooling, and any facility or colocation charges. |
| Utilization | Model actual billed usage and any reservation or commitment terms, including idle time where it is charged. | Spread capital and facility costs across useful work completed over the system’s service life; include idle capacity. |
| Capacity and location | Check the target region and zone, current capacity, and whether a reservation is available for the needed configuration. | Capacity depends on the systems you own or lease and on available power, cooling, and space. |
| Operations | Track usage and ancillary charges; the available evidence does not quantify staffing savings. | Account for maintenance and staff as well as facility operations; no directly comparable staffing estimate is established here. |
Why a GPU hourly rate is not the cloud total
A quoted accelerator rate can omit the machine that hosts it and other resources required to run the workload. Google Cloud’s pricing information distinguishes GPU charges from VM, disk, networking, and other costs. Build the cloud estimate from the full configuration and region you would actually use, then check current terms rather than reusing an old rate.
Purchase arrangements also affect the comparison. Google Cloud describes sustained-use and committed-use discounts for eligible resources, and zone-specific capacity reservations. These can change the price or the certainty of access, but they are not interchangeable: compare the terms for the exact workload and the capacity you need. Spot is a separate capacity option with dynamic pricing; use its current rate only after deciding whether its availability characteristics suit the workload.

Prices do change. As one historical example, AWS announced reductions of up to 45% for named EC2 P4 and P5 instance types. That was a provider announcement, not an independent comparison, and it should not be treated as a current quote or a general cloud-GPU discount.
What on-premises power and facility needs look like
NVIDIA lists the DGX H100 as an eight-H100-GPU system with 640 GB of total GPU memory and approximately 10.2 kW maximum system power usage. The power figure is a product specification, not a measured average draw for every workload. It makes clear why an owned-GPU estimate needs the system’s actual power profile and local electricity costs, rather than a hardware price alone.

Facility capacity can constrain deployment independently of the server budget. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD deployment guidance identifies power, cooling, and space as the three main resource constraints in an air-cooled data-center environment. For an on-premises estimate, use the actual site or colocation arrangement: electricity tariff, cooling overhead, rack and power capacity, and any limits on available space. The cited sources do not establish those local costs.

- Fix the workload and service target. Record the model or job, input and output assumptions, throughput target, and latency or completion-time requirement.
- Build the cloud total. Price the GPU and host machine in the intended region and zone, then add storage, networking, and other required billable resources. Apply only discounts, reservations, or commitments whose eligibility and terms you have verified.
- Build the owned-system total. Include purchase or lease cost, useful life, support and maintenance, staffing, power, cooling, space or colocation, networking, and storage.
- Use realistic capacity assumptions. Estimate utilization, idle time, workload growth, and headroom needed for demand peaks or failures. For cloud, check current capacity and reservation options; for owned systems, check facility limits and deployment lead time.
- Divide full cost by completed useful work. Use the same output unit and time period on both sides. State assumptions so readers can see which changes—such as lower utilization or higher energy costs—would alter the result.
In simplified form, compare cloud cost per output = total cloud charges over the period ÷ useful output delivered with on-premises cost per output = total amortized system and operating costs over the period ÷ useful output delivered. The equations do not produce a meaningful answer without matched performance measurements and organization-specific costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When capacity availability may matter more than the headline rate
Cloud capacity is not determined by price alone. Region, zone, configuration, reservation status, and current availability affect whether the desired GPU capacity can be obtained when needed. Spot pricing may lower the charge, but its dynamic rate and distinct availability characteristics make it a poor assumption for a workload that requires uninterrupted access unless the workload can accommodate them.

Owned systems provide capacity tied to the hardware and facility available to the organization. That can suit predictable, sustained demand when the system can be kept productively occupied, but it does not remove limits imposed by power, cooling, or space. A fixed installation can also be a poor fit if demand is highly variable or if required peak capacity would sit idle much of the time.
Is there a utilization point where buying always wins?
No generally valid break-even utilization level is established by the available evidence. A decision-grade threshold depends on the hardware quote, useful life, support, staffing, local electricity and cooling costs, space or colocation, cloud region and rate, reservation or commitment terms, workload performance, and actual utilization. Without those matched inputs, a single percentage or cost-per-token claim would give false precision.
Use a scenario model instead: estimate the same workload at plausible low, expected, and high utilization, and show how each changes cost per completed output. Keep workload growth and capacity headroom visible rather than assuming every accelerator-hour will be productive. If a vendor supplies a break-even claim, ask for its configuration, region, power assumptions, utilization, service life, and included costs before applying it to your own environment.
