Sometimes—but “runs on my phone” describes where a model answers, not proof that an app is a drop-in Gemini replacement or that every part of the app stays offline. Android offers certain local AI features through Google’s AICore system service; a separate assistant app can download a model and run it on a compatible phone. Both routes have limits in availability, capability and privacy scope.
What “runs entirely on my phone” actually means
For a feature to count as on-device AI, the model inference for that feature must happen on the phone. That is narrower than saying an entire app never connects to the internet: an app may still need a connection for setup, model downloads, analytics, crash reports, ads, backups or optional cloud features.

There are two distinct ways to use local AI on a phone. Google’s AICore is a system service that supports features powered by models such as Gemini Nano on compatible Android devices. Alternatively, a dedicated local-model app can download a model and run it on the handset. In either case, support depends on the device and the particular feature or app.
Which phone-based alternatives can work offline?
Android AICore features
Google says supported AICore tasks, including text summarization and smart replies, can work without a network connection or in Airplane mode. For those supported tasks, Google says sensitive information remains on the device and is not sent to Google or the cloud. That statement applies to AICore’s supported local features; it is not a blanket description of every Gemini product or every AI feature on Android. Google’s AICore help page says Android 14 or later is required, but availability also varies by device and manufacturer. Android 14 by itself does not guarantee access to every AICore capability.

AICore is a system service, not a normal assistant app to find through a standard Play Store search. Google’s help page directs users to Settings > Google profile > All Services > Privacy & Security > System services to find it. The specific features you can use depend on your phone’s support.
Separate local-model apps
A local-model app downloads model files to the phone and uses a compatible model there. The app itself may be small while its model files require additional storage. One Android app vendor describes smaller models for budget phones and larger models for flagship devices, but that is vendor guidance—not a universal compatibility rule. Check the app’s current device requirements and available models before relying on it offline. On Device AI’s Android listing describes its app and separately downloaded models.

On iPhone, the reviewed local-assistant vendor says its app needs an internet connection for initial setup and to browse or download models, then can run offline. Its stated compatibility is iOS 17 or later for that app—not a general requirement for all local AI apps. The vendor also says the assistant is weaker at hard reasoning and current events than cloud services, and that long sessions can use meaningful battery and warm the phone. These are the vendor’s descriptions, not independent performance measurements. The vendor’s iPhone page provides its app-specific details.
How local assistants compare with Gemini
A local assistant can be useful for tasks that do not require current information or complex analysis, especially when you want to use a supported feature without a network connection. It should not be assumed to match a cloud assistant’s breadth, reasoning or access to up-to-date information. The available product material does not establish that any particular free local app is an equivalent replacement for Gemini, and no phone-specific independent benchmark is established here.

Google’s warning about Gemini Apps applies to those experiences too: “LLM experiences (Gemini Apps included) can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual.” A local model can also produce incorrect answers; offline operation is not a guarantee of accuracy. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub includes this caution and describes Gemini Apps’ separate data practices.

Google’s AICore privacy statement is specific: for its supported AICore tasks, sensitive information stays on the device and is not sent to the cloud or Google. Gemini Apps have a separate privacy notice. Google says Gemini Apps information may include prompts, uploaded content, recordings and transcripts, information from apps, browsers and devices, and location and subscription information. The notice was last updated June 29, 2026. Those disclosures concern Gemini Apps; they should not be generalized to every Android AI feature.

For a third-party local assistant, on-device inference alone does not establish that the app sends no other data. Check its current privacy policy and settings for analytics, crash reporting, advertising, backups and optional cloud requests. The App Store listing reviewed for the iPhone app states that its developer privacy disclosures have not been verified by Apple, so treat those entries as developer-provided information rather than an independent audit. Before switching, compare the specific feature or app you intend to use—not just its “offline” label.
- Offline tasks: Confirm which exact functions work without a connection. Setup and model downloads may still require internet.
- Compatibility: Check your phone model, operating-system version and the app’s supported models. Android 14 or later is only a baseline for AICore availability, not a guarantee of support.
- Storage: Find out whether model files are downloaded separately and how much space the selected model needs. Google notes that AICore model updates can temporarily need extra storage.
- Answer quality and speed: Try your ordinary tasks, such as summarizing a note or drafting a simple reply. Do not assume a local model will handle difficult reasoning or current events as well as an online service.
- Battery and heat: Longer local sessions may use more battery and warm the phone; the extent depends on the app, model and device.
- Data beyond inference: Review the app’s current settings and privacy disclosures for telemetry, ads, backups and cloud fallbacks.
Do not use computer requirements as phone-buying advice. For example, Android Developers’ local-model comparison lists RAM and storage requirements for Android Studio models on computers. Those figures do not establish minimum phone specifications.
