The goal is to refocus from near to far through the lenses themselves, rather than making you look through different zones of a progressive lens. “Omnifocal” is a common way to describe the idea; the research and companies cited here more often call it “autofocal” or “autofocusing” eyewear. The technology is promising, but the sources available do not establish that a finished consumer model is currently on sale.
What problem are autofocus glasses meant to solve?
These glasses are primarily being developed for presbyopia: the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to accommodate, or refocus naturally on nearby objects. A fixed-focus single-vision lens cannot cover the full range of distances as that ability narrows. Existing corrections include reading glasses, multiple pairs for different tasks, and progressive lenses.

Progressive lenses provide different optical powers in different regions: distance vision is generally at the top and near vision at the bottom, so the wearer moves their eyes or head to use the appropriate zone. Reading glasses provide near focus. Neither type automatically changes focus in response to the object being viewed.
How do the glasses adjust focus?
An autofocal system needs to identify the viewing target or its distance, calculate the required correction, and change the power of one or more variable-focus lenses. The sensing and lens technology differ by design.

Eye tracking and depth sensing
Stanford researchers’ 2019 prototype combined eye tracking, a depth camera, and focus-tunable lenses. Its listed components included a Pupil Labs eye tracker, an Intel RealSense R200 depth camera, Optotune EL-30-45 lenses, and custom optics to correct coma. Eye tracking was important to the design: the Stanford group reported that users reacted negatively to an earlier version controlled only by a depth camera. The prototype used external hardware on a custom frame, including a VR-headset-like form factor; it should not be mistaken for a current retail pair. Stanford’s summary of the study describes the approach as using eye tracking, depth sensing, and focus-tunable lenses to refocus the real world.
Distance sensors and fluidic actuation
The European Commission’s CORDIS report on Laclarée’s I-SEE project describes a different arrangement: distance sensors, a fluidic micro-actuator in each temple, and variable lenses. The project says the correction is adapted in real time to the distance between the wearer and the object. Its Gamma project description specifies a response time under one second and a 20 mm variable zone for close-up vision. Those are project-reported specifications for a product under development, not independent measurements of a retail product. The same report says an earlier generation was tested in an exploratory study involving 40 patients with the CHU of St Étienne; it does not provide a full peer-reviewed outcome report for that study. Fresnel liquid-crystal lenses
Elcyo describes a thin, large-diameter adjustable lens based on Fresnel liquid-crystal technology. Its company page says its autofocal glasses are under development and that it is aiming to launch products around fall 2027. That is a company target, not a confirmed retail date. What has testing shown so far?
The Stanford study evaluated a research prototype, not a finished consumer product. In a group of 19 users, researchers assessed visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and refocusing tasks. Stanford’s summary reports better acuity than participants’ monovision or progressive corrections, similar contrast sensitivity, faster refocusing, and significantly greater task accuracy than progressives. In a separate preference study involving 37 users, 23 ranked autofocals best for ease of refocusing. The same summary notes that the prototype’s VR-headset form factor was less comfortable.
These results indicate that the concept can help with particular visual tasks in a prototype evaluation. They do not establish long-term comfort, durability, broad prescription compatibility, or a clinical recommendation for an individual wearer. The study’s reported prevalence figure—nearly 20% of people worldwide with presbyopia—is the figure given on the Stanford page summarizing the 2019 work, not a newly verified estimate for 2026.

What can you use while the technology develops?
If you need help focusing at different distances now, discuss presbyopia correction with an optician or other qualified eye-care professional. Existing choices include reading glasses, separate pairs for different distances, and progressive lenses. When comparing them, consider:
- Whether you need near, intermediate, distance, or a combination of vision correction.
- The usable field of view and whether you are comfortable moving your head or eyes to access different zones.
- Prescription suitability, comfort, and any adaptation period.
- Whether one pair or switching between pairs better suits your daily tasks.
“Progressive reading glasses” is a product-category phrase for an existing correction option; it does not mean the glasses sense distance or change focus automatically. An eye-care professional can help determine which correction is appropriate for your vision needs.
