The OM System PEN is a compact Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera for everyday and travel photography, combining a corner electronic viewfinder, in-body stabilization and interchangeable lenses in a retro body. Its rangefinder-style description refers to the viewfinder’s position and body shape: it is not an optical rangefinder. The strongest case for it is its feature set in a small package; the main compromises are basic video, fiddly controls and less comfortable handling with larger lenses.
What the OM System PEN is—and who it suits
The PEN is best understood as a small, viewfinder-equipped camera for people who want more control and lens choice than a phone or fixed-lens compact provides, without carrying a larger camera system. Its Micro Four Thirds mount accepts interchangeable M.Zuiko lenses, and the body includes a vari-angle touchscreen for composing from different positions.

That combination makes it a natural fit for travel, everyday photography and casual portraits. It is a less compelling choice for demanding outdoor or action photography, especially if you expect to use long, heavy lenses. TechRadar’s Timothy Coleman recommended it as an enjoyable everyday and travel camera after reporting several weeks with a loaned body and kit lens; he also used additional Olympus and Panasonic Leica lenses during that review.

Specifications are reported by OM SYSTEM and TechRadar in 2026. The stabilization figure is a manufacturer rating under the stated test conditions, not a guarantee of the same result in every lens-and-shooting combination. OM SYSTEM’s official PEN product and specifications page also describes a dust-reduction system; its claim that this keeps images free of spots is manufacturer product language, not an independently established guarantee.

What makes the PEN appealing
A viewfinder in a compact body
The upper-left electronic viewfinder is one of the PEN’s defining features. It gives you an eye-level way to compose and review images while retaining the compact, rangefinder-style outline. Because it is electronic, it displays a digital preview rather than looking through an optical rangefinder mechanism.
Stabilization and lens choice
Sensor-shift stabilization helps steady the image when shooting handheld, and the Micro Four Thirds mount gives the camera access to a broad range of compatible lenses. That flexibility is useful when your photography changes: a small zoom can cover a walk or trip, while a brighter prime can be a better fit for dim interiors or portraits.

Travel-friendly features
The vari-angle touchscreen, 393g body weight and compact design make the PEN easier to carry than a larger camera setup. Its IPX1 rating is a limited splash-resistance rating; it is not a waterproofing claim, so do not treat it as protection for immersion or severe weather.

Where the compromises show
Video is basic by current hybrid-camera standards
The PEN records up to 8-bit 4K/30 video, as reported by DPReview and TechRadar. That ceiling may be enough for casual clips, but buyers prioritizing more advanced video features should compare alternatives before choosing it.

Controls take some getting used to
TechRadar describes the controls as fiddly. The compact body and retro styling make room for less expansive handling than a larger camera, so photographers who rely on quick, frequent adjustments may find it less comfortable than a body with a deeper grip and more room for controls.
Large lenses work against the small-body design
The PEN is at its most coherent with compact lenses. TechRadar says the handling is less suited to long lenses, which can make the small body feel unbalanced. If your regular subjects call for a large telephoto lens, a body designed for a firmer grip is a more sensible starting point.

Body-only or 14-42mm kit?
The body-only version makes sense if you already own compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses or have a specific lens in mind. The 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III kit zoom is the straightforward choice for a first lens: it covers a 28–84mm-equivalent field of view, from moderately wide framing to short telephoto reach.
Its variable f/3.5–5.6 maximum aperture is a practical tradeoff for a compact general-purpose zoom. Cameralabs notes that it will not produce strong portrait background blur at the long end. For low light or more subject separation, Cameralabs suggests considering the compact Olympus 17mm f/1.8 prime instead; that is a reviewer’s suggested pairing, not a requirement for every buyer.

Reported launch prices varied by market and publication, and they are historical rather than current offers. TechRadar reported $999.99 body-only or $1,099 with the kit in the US, £849 or £949 in the UK, and AU$1,499 or AU$1,799 in Australia. DPReview reported US launch pricing of $999 body-only and a UK body-only figure of £899, illustrating the UK discrepancy. Check current local pricing and availability before buying, and account for the cost of any additional lenses.

| Camera or option | What differs | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| OM System PEN | Compact interchangeable-lens Micro Four Thirds camera with corner EVF, up to 5.5 EV stabilization under OM SYSTEM’s stated conditions, and 8-bit 4K/30 video | You specifically want a small, rangefinder-style body with an electronic viewfinder and lens flexibility |
| OM-5 II | TechRadar points more demanding outdoor and action buyers toward the OM-5 II; the comparison is about tougher handling and a more substantial grip/body | You prioritize rugged handling or expect to use larger lenses |
| APS-C alternatives | They use a larger sensor format than Micro Four Thirds; stabilization and video capabilities depend on the specific model | You prefer to compare larger sensor format and are willing to weigh model-specific stabilization and body tradeoffs |
| Panasonic Lumix L10 | Fixed built-in 24–75mm-equivalent zoom rather than interchangeable lenses | You want a compact camera experience without building a lens system |
DPReview characterizes the PEN as blending ideas from the E-P7 and PEN-F, including a corner EVF, plastic construction and updated autofocus. It is not a direct PEN-F replacement: the PEN-F is a distinct model, and the reviews describe its metal construction as a contrast to the PEN’s more mid-range feel. DPReview’s assessment is that there is no direct competitor if your specific brief is a small rangefinder-style interchangeable-lens camera; that does not make it the best choice for buyers whose priorities are video, action handling or a larger sensor.
Should you buy the OM System PEN?
Choose the PEN if you want an especially compact interchangeable-lens camera and value the combination of a viewfinder, stabilization, vari-angle screen and Micro Four Thirds lens access. The kit zoom is the more immediately useful starting point for someone without compatible lenses; choose body-only if you already have a lens plan.
Look elsewhere if you need advanced video, prefer a deeper grip for long lenses, or expect demanding outdoor and action use. In those cases, compare the OM-5 II or other bodies against your specific needs rather than paying for the PEN’s compact styling alone.
