OLED is a strong starting point for dark-room movies and wide seating because each pixel makes its own light and can switch off. QLED and Mini LED LCDs are worth comparing for sustained brightness and daytime viewing, while Mini LED local dimming can improve LCD contrast. The labels overlap: a TV can be both QLED and Mini LED.
What OLED, QLED and Mini LED mean
OLED: light from each pixel
OLED is self-emissive: each pixel produces its own light and can turn off. That pixel-level control creates very deep blacks and precise contrast without an LCD backlight, making OLED a strong category-level choice for dark scenes and seats spread across a room. RTINGS explains the display differences, and Samsung UK’s guide also describes OLED’s dark-room appeal.

QLED: an LCD with quantum dots
In Samsung’s conventional TV terminology, QLED is an LED-backlit LCD with a quantum-dot layer that helps produce a wider color range. It still depends on a backlight; it is not the same display technology as OLED. See Samsung US’s explanation of QLED.

Mini LED: smaller backlights and local dimming
Mini LED describes an LCD backlighting approach that uses smaller LEDs and local dimming zones to control light more finely. Strong implementations can substantially improve LCD contrast, but zone-based dimming may still create halos around subtitles or bright objects on dark backgrounds. RTINGS’ Mini LED guide discusses the technology and its trade-offs.

Why QLED and Mini LED are not opposites
QLED describes a color-enhancing layer; Mini LED describes the backlight. A television can use both. Samsung calls its own combination Neo QLED, but naming varies by brand, so check the specific model’s panel and backlight details rather than treating these as three exclusive categories. Samsung UK’s QLED guide explains its terminology.
Which display fits your room and viewing habits?
| Room or use | What to prioritize | Useful starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark room and movies | Black level, contrast, shadow detail and dimming artifacts | OLED | Premium Mini LED LCDs can deliver strong contrast, but bright objects may halo. |
| Bright room or daytime sports | Sustained and HDR brightness, plus reflection handling | Compare strong Mini LED and QLED LCD models | Some OLED sets are bright too; model performance and screen coating matter. |
| Wide seating arrangement | Color and contrast consistency off-axis | OLED is often a strong starting point | Some LCD models use viewing-angle-enhancement layers; check the exact set. |
| Gaming | Refresh rate, input lag, VRR support, brightness and response time | Compare specifications and model-level gaming tests | Fast OLED response is useful, but long exposure to fixed HUD elements may raise image-retention concerns. |
| Many hours of news tickers, sports graphics or fixed game HUDs | Static-content exposure and retention protections | Consider a strong LCD if fixed imagery is a major concern | No display type is immune to aging or hardware failure; the label alone cannot predict lifespan. |
These are category-level starting points, not guarantees. RTINGS’ Mini LED versus OLED comparison and its QLED versus OLED comparison show why model-level results matter.

How the practical trade-offs compare
Black level and contrast
OLED’s pixel-level control produces clean blacks in dark scenes and avoids the halos that can occur when an LCD’s local-dimming zones illuminate nearby pixels. Mini LED can narrow the contrast gap, but the result depends on the model’s dimming implementation. RTINGS’ comparison covers these differences.

Brightness and reflections
Do not assume QLED or Mini LED is brighter than every OLED, or that either LCD label guarantees an advantage in a sunlit room. Brightness varies across both families. Compare the exact model’s sustained and HDR brightness measurements, and consider how well its screen handles reflections alongside the room’s lighting. RTINGS cautions against judging brightness by category alone.

- HI - QLED MINILED: Striking contrast and vivid, lifelike color put every scene in a new light. Whether it's a sunny landscape or a candlelit drama, the picture leaps off the screen. Mini-LED backlighting uses hundreds of precise light zones to enhance contrast across the screen. Paired with Hi-QLED technology, every color comes through with stunning depth and accuracy
- NATIVE 144HZ REFRESH RATE: Fast breaks, high-speed chases, live finales — every frame stays crisp and fluid, so the action is always exactly where you need it to be. Native 144Hz refresh performance keeps movement fast and sharp, reducing blur during gameplay and live sports. The quick response helps you stay in control during competitive gaming while making rapid camera shots in shows and movies easier to follow
- BUILT-IN SUBWOOFER: Immersive deep bass from the built-in subwoofer pulls you into the heart of the moment, from the rumble of an explosion to the thump of your favorite song. Feel like you’re a part of the action
- ANTI-REFLECTION & GLARE-FREE: Bright rooms are no match for this screen. The anti-reflection and glare-free display keeps your view clean and distraction-free, so you stay focused on what matters — the show
- UNIBODY SLIM DESIGN: Edge-to-edge display and a seamless design that disappears into your room — so all you see is the picture
Viewing angle
OLED generally keeps its picture more consistent from wider angles. LCD performance depends on panel construction and whether the model includes a viewing-angle-enhancement layer. Check off-axis results for the particular model rather than relying on the technology name. RTINGS’ comparison discusses viewing angles.
Motion and gaming
RTINGS reports much faster pixel transitions on OLED in its tested comparison, but fast transitions alone do not determine the better gaming TV. Compare refresh rate, input lag, variable refresh rate (VRR) support and HDR brightness too. RTINGS’ model comparison and Samsung UK’s buying guide cover different parts of that decision.

Static images and OLED retention
Long or repeated display of the same image can cause image retention on OLED screens. Sony identifies logos, tickers, game elements, menus and photos as examples of content that may remain on screen for extended periods. Its guidance lists panel refresh, pixel shift and screen savers among protective functions; see Sony’s image-retention guidance, modified January 16, 2026. The concern is about usage patterns, not a basis for predicting every set’s lifespan.
What measured examples can—and cannot—tell you
RTINGS’ 2025 flagship comparisons illustrate why labels are not brightness rankings. In its HDR hallway real-scene measurement, the Sony BRAVIA 9 Mini LED reached 802 cd/m² and the LG G5 OLED reached 1,120 cd/m²; in a separate comparison, the LG G5 measured 1,120 cd/m² and the Samsung QN90F QLED 1,019 cd/m². These are results for named models in one scene, not category averages or a complete measure of brightness; RTINGS notes individual-panel variation and the limits of that scene. See the Mini LED versus OLED and QLED versus OLED comparisons.

Those figures are measurements of three specific implementations, not averages for Mini LED or OLED. They should not be read as a universal ranking of display categories. RTINGS’ comparison provides the model context.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose between models
- Start with the room: For a dark movie room, put OLED high on the shortlist. For daytime viewing, compare strong LCD models and OLEDs by measured brightness and reflection handling.
- Account for seating: If viewers sit at a wide range of angles, compare off-axis performance for the exact models under consideration.
- Match the set to the content: For gaming, check refresh rate, input lag and VRR as well as response time. If fixed graphics stay on screen for long periods, weigh OLED retention protections against your usage pattern.
- Compare same-size models in budget: Labels cover a broad range of implementations. Use model-specific measurements and specifications; do not extrapolate one flagship result to every TV in its category.
