Yes—OLED burn-in is a real risk when bright, repeated static images stay on screen for long periods. RTINGS’ September 26, 2025 update found burn-in on most OLED TVs in its 30-month accelerated test. That result shows what sustained stress can do; it does not predict how many years an OLED will last in a typical home.
What RTINGS found at month 30
In its September 26, 2025 update, RTINGS reported that most OLED televisions in its accelerated longevity test were showing burn-in. The test used a small number of sets per model—one unit per model—so the results reveal a broad pattern under the test conditions, not a dependable ranking of brands or a guarantee about every set.

The earlier month-18 update had reported signs of permanent burn-in on all OLED TVs in the test. RTINGS noted that the Samsung S95C showed only slight signs; three monitors had faint CNN banner traces that were not noticeable with real content. The month-30 report is a later checkpoint, not a household-use lifespan estimate. RTINGS’ results page

RTINGS ran its 100-TV test for either 20 or 15.5 hours a day, totaling 126 hours per week, with repeated on/off cycles. The same content was displayed across multiple models at maximum brightness. RTINGS measured brightness and uniformity every two months, enabled panel-saving features, and designed the schedule to allow automatic compensation cycles to run. RTINGS’ test methodology
These are deliberately demanding conditions. RTINGS distinguishes this accelerated test from its earlier real-life burn-in test, which used LG C7 OLED TVs. The accelerated schedule helps expose differences and trends; it is not a valid way to convert test hours into years of normal viewing.

What the later 10,500-hour comparison adds
In an August 2026 analysis, RTINGS compared OLEDs from its 2020–2023 accelerated test with a 2017 LG C7 at a 10,500-hour CNN-content checkpoint. It found no consistent reduction in permanent image retention for the newer sets under those stress-test conditions. The finding is specific to the tested displays, content, and checkpoint; it does not establish that OLED technology made no progress or that typical viewers should avoid OLED. RTINGS notes that newer sets are brighter and that most people vary what they watch. RTINGS’ 10,500-hour comparison
Other changes in OLED performance do not answer the longevity question by themselves. RTINGS’ 2026 review-dataset analysis found 2023 OLEDs averaged 28% higher brightness than 2017 OLEDs in a sustained 10% SDR window test and 52% higher brightness in a sustained full-screen SDR test. A separate size-adjusted estimate put 2025–2026 OLED TVs at around 33% lower power use than 2020–2021 models for a 50% APL, 100 cd/m² checkerboard pattern. RTINGS describes that last figure as an approximate overall efficiency trend, not a direct measurement of panel efficiency. None of these figures proves a longer burn-in-free life. Can burn-in happen with normal use?
It can, especially when the same bright elements appear repeatedly or remain fixed for long periods. Sony identifies channel logos, news tickers, menus, program guides, static app content, game overlays, and letterbox or 4:3 bars as examples of content that can contribute to image retention. Its guidance also describes automatic panel refresh and calibration features. These details apply to Sony products; controls and instructions differ across manufacturers. Sony’s image-retention guidance
Risk depends in part on the pattern of use: hours spent with a fixed desktop interface or persistent logo are different from viewing varied films and shows. The cited tests do not establish a reliable number of ordinary-use years before burn-in appears, so a precise lifespan estimate would be misleading.

- OLED CARE: Helps protect your OLED display to retain the best picture quality possible over time
How to reduce risk without overusing panel refresh
- Use the display’s built-in panel-care features and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- When convenient, avoid leaving bright static screens, logos, or game overlays visible for long stretches.
- Do not manually run intensive refresh cycles unless the manufacturer instructs you to; automatic compensation and refresh behavior varies by product.
These steps can help manage exposure, but no single setting guarantees that burn-in will never occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can OLED burn-in be fixed?
Permanent burn-in is not the same as temporary image retention. The test findings concern permanent image retention, and the cited manufacturer guidance describes panel-refresh and calibration functions; it does not establish that those functions can reverse permanent burn-in. If you see a persistent mark, consult the exact model’s support guidance before trying a manual refresh procedure.

What to check before buying an OLED TV or monitor
There is no model-by-model longevity ranking supported by this test. Compare a display against your use and verify its written warranty rather than treating a single accelerated test result as a prediction.
- Your content pattern: Consider how many hours you expect to spend with fixed desktop elements, channel logos, dashboards, or game overlays.
- Panel care: Check which automatic care functions the exact model includes and what its manufacturer says about their use.
- Written warranty: Verify whether permanent image persistence or burn-in is covered for your specific product and region, and check exclusions and duration.
- Brightness and room: Match the display’s brightness to the room and your viewing needs; higher brightness is not proof of longer burn-in resistance.
Warranty coverage varies. Acer’s United States support statement says permanent image persistence or burn-in on its OLED monitors is covered for three years. MSI has announced a three-year burn-in warranty and says terms may vary by region. These are not universal OLED warranties: check the current written terms for the exact model and location.
