Compare the specific phones and the tasks you care about, not just the chip names. One 2026 comparison illustrates the trade-offs: Snapdragon 8 Elite led some CPU and graphics tests, while Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 led multi-core and AI tests and handled a sustained graphics test the older-chip phone could not finish.
First, what do “older flagship” and “newer midrange” mean here?
Those labels can be misleading. The example in this article compares the older Snapdragon 8 Elite with the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Qualcomm describes the 8 Gen 5 as a premium-tier platform, not a midrange chip. This is therefore a comparison of an older Elite chip against a newer base-tier chip within Qualcomm’s 8 series—not evidence that every older flagship outperforms every newer midrange processor.

Qualcomm reported up to 36% performance improvement and 76% better web-browsing responsiveness for the 8 Gen 5 in its announcement. Those are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independent results from the phone test below. Chip tiers and vendor claims can help frame a comparison, but they do not predict how two finished phones will perform in every task.
What the two tested phones show
Android Central’s 2026 hands-on comparison tested the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026, powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite, against the Motorola Razr Fold, powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The results below belong to those devices and test conditions; they should not be treated as universal chip rankings.

What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core average | 2,791 | 2,593 | The older-chip phone scored higher in this single-core test. |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core average | 8,268 | 8,559 | The newer-chip phone scored higher; its best run was 8,809. |
| 3DMark Wild Life Extreme score and average frame rate | 5,404; 32.36 FPS | 4,181; 25.04 FPS | The older-chip phone led the graphics benchmark, but its results declined during repeated runs. |
| Geekbench AI quantized average | 3,245 | 3,932 | The newer-chip phone scored higher in this AI test. |
| Wild Life Extreme stress-test outcome | Overheated and stopped after a few minutes | Completed with 56.5% stability | The older-chip phone did not complete the sustained test; the newer-chip phone did. |
Android Central’s author, Brady Snyder, summed up the purchase implication in the context of this Razr comparison: “Overall, it’s clear that whether a phone has an Elite chip or not shouldn’t factor highly into your purchasing decision.” The scores show why: the winner changes with the workload, and a strong short-run graphics result did not translate into completing the sustained test.
How to interpret the results for your workload
Everyday responsiveness and CPU-heavy work
The Elite-equipped Razr led the Geekbench 6 single-core average, while the 8 Gen 5-equipped Razr Fold led the multi-core average. A benchmark score is a measurement of a particular test, not a promise that one phone will feel faster in every app. App behavior and the rest of the phone affect perceived speed.
Rank #2
Gaming and graphics
The Razr Ultra recorded the higher Wild Life Extreme score and average frame rate, but its score fell on the third run and its frame rate dropped below 30 FPS. It then overheated and stopped the stress test. The Razr Fold’s lower graphics result came with a completed stress test and 56.5% stability. For extended gaming, repeated-run and stress-test behavior is more informative than a single peak result.
On-device AI
The Razr Fold had the higher average Geekbench AI quantized score. That establishes an advantage in this test setup only; it does not prove that every AI feature or application will be faster on every 8 Gen 5 phone.

Choose between actual phones, not chip labels
Before deciding, check the exact model and regional variant. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon device finder pairs platforms with specific smartphone models, but the chip alone does not establish a phone’s features or performance. GSMArena’s 2026 comparison draws on two and a half years of reviews across 70 smartphone chips, and notes that software optimization, thermal management, storage speed, and app behavior also influence perceived speed.
- Match the workload: weigh single-core responsiveness, multi-core tasks, graphics, or on-device AI according to what you actually do.
- Check sustained behavior: favor repeated-run or stress-test results when long gaming or heavy workloads matter. Phone size and cooling design can constrain a powerful chip.
- Compare the whole device: display, cameras, battery, memory, storage, connectivity, durability, and form factor are model-level differences the Razr chip tests do not settle.
- Compare ownership terms: check the actual price, warranty, condition, and software-support commitment for each model in your market, especially if you plan to keep it for several years.
- Separate evidence types: independent tests of finished phones answer a different question from a chip maker’s own performance claims.
For a device-specific example, the Android Central comparison of the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 and Motorola Razr Fold provides the figures above. They do not establish which phone is the better purchase in every market: current prices, local availability, support terms, and the buyer’s priorities still need to be checked.
Rank #4
A practical decision rule
Choose an older flagship chip when the particular phone’s independently tested strengths fit your demanding workload and the phone is a better value in the condition and market where you are buying it. Choose the newer chip when its measured strengths, sustained behavior, or support in that particular phone better fit your needs. If neither phone has reliable tests for your main workload, treat the chip tier as a clue—not a verdict.
