Before selling, giving away, or recycling a phone, remove its physical SIM card. If you still need the number, ask your carrier whether you can transfer the SIM to your next phone. If you will not reuse the card, the FTC advises destroying it; CISA also says you can store it somewhere safe. Then erase and recycle the phone separately—removing the SIM does not wipe the handset.
What to do with an old SIM card
- Remove it carefully. Use the phone’s manual to find the SIM tray or slot. Do not force the tray, and check that you are not removing a microSD card instead.
- Decide whether you need the number. If you are keeping it, contact your carrier about transferring the SIM to your new phone. Whether the card can be reused depends on carrier arrangements and device compatibility.
- If you will not reuse it, destroy it or store it securely. The FTC says, “If you’re not going to reuse the SIM card, destroy it.” CISA gives the alternatives of physically destroying the card or storing it in a safe place. Neither agency specifies a particular household tool or destruction method.
- Handle the phone as a separate task. Back up anything you need, remove other removable storage, unlink relevant accounts or trusted-device access, and factory-reset the handset using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Recycle or pass on the handset through an appropriate route. Check with your municipality, carrier, manufacturer, or retailer and confirm what the program accepts.
The FTC’s U.S. consumer guidance covers SIM removal, transfer, destruction, and phone erasure in its phone-disposal guidance. CISA likewise advises removing a SIM and either physically destroying it or storing it safely in Disposing of Devices Safely.

A SIM that is no longer active should not be assumed to have no residual personal information: the official guidance reviewed does not establish that. If you are unsure whether the card is still needed or how it is handled on your account, ask your carrier before disposing of it.

An eSIM-only phone has no physical card to remove. Transfer or deletion of an eSIM profile depends on the phone and carrier, so follow their instructions before handing over the device. The cited disposal guidance focuses mainly on physical SIM cards; it does not establish one universal eSIM process.

Erase and recycle the phone separately
Removing a SIM protects the card; it does not erase photos, messages, account access, or other data stored on the phone. The FTC’s January 2025 phone-upgrade guidance recommends backing up needed data, unlinking accounts or devices as appropriate, and factory-resetting the old phone. The Australian Cyber Security Centre also advises removing SIMs and other removable media and securely erasing the device in its device-disposal guidance.
- Back up files and information you intend to keep.
- Remove the SIM and any microSD card or other removable storage.
- Unlink accounts or trusted-device access where relevant.
- Factory-reset the phone according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check the receiving recycler, retailer, or trade-in program’s accepted materials and preparation requirements.
Recycling routes and accepted items vary by location. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs points consumers to municipal, retail, and other e-waste options in its e-waste guidance; use your local authority or the organization receiving the phone for instructions that apply where you live.
