Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Whether it works depends on the phone’s USB audio support, the DAC’s power needs and connectors, and the stereo’s inputs. The available evidence does not verify a particular $10 DAC, the author’s hardware, or the claim that this setup sounds better than other speakers.
How the phone-to-stereo signal path works
In this setup, the phone supplies music, a USB DAC converts the digital signal to analog, and the stereo amplifies that signal through its speakers:

The Android Open Source Project describes the conversion this way: “Similarly, the host sends a digital audio signal over USB protocol to the peripheral, where a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) converts and presents to an analog output terminal.” The DAC is the conversion point; the stereo needs an analog input that accepts its output.

Check these three compatibility points first
1. The phone must support USB audio host mode
Android’s official USB digital audio documentation says Android 5.0 (API level 21) and later support a subset of USB Audio Class 1 features in host mode. That is not a guarantee for every phone running Android 5.0 or later: the phone must act as the USB host, and the DAC and playback format must be supported. Android says compatible USB audio playback is routed automatically under its audio policy.
For an older Android phone with a micro-USB port, the connection may require a USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter. Some USB-C phones connect directly to a DAC, but connector shape alone does not prove USB audio compatibility. Check the exact phone and DAC guidance before buying an adapter.

2. The DAC must receive enough power
A phone may not supply enough USB power for a particular DAC. Schiit’s Android connection guidance notes that some combinations may need a powered USB hub. If a direct connection is not recognized or does not stay connected, check the phone and DAC requirements; a hub is relevant only if that combination needs external power.
3. The DAC output must match a stereo input
Look at the DAC’s analog output and the stereo’s available inputs. If the DAC has a 3.5 mm mini-jack output and the stereo has an unused pair of RCA line inputs, use a 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable. Audioengine documents a mini-jack connection to a stereo system, and Schiit describes a 1/8-inch-to-dual-RCA cable for analog connections. Confirm both connector types rather than assuming every DAC has the same output.

Use an input labeled AUX, LINE, or another available line-level input. A headphone output and a DAC’s line-level output are not identical: Schiit notes that headphone output may be lower than a typical line-level source.
Choose between the phone’s headphone jack and a USB DAC
If the phone has a headphone jack, its analog output may be connectable to the stereo with a suitable cable. If it does not, or if you want the phone to send digital audio to an external converter, a USB DAC adapter is one possible route. Which option is practical depends on the phone, available cables, stereo input, and power needs—not on a universal sound-quality ranking. The cited documentation establishes connection options, not that an external DAC will sound better in every setup.

Set it up in this order
- Identify the stereo input. Find an unused AUX, LINE, or RCA line input and note its connector type.
- Check the phone’s USB port and support. Confirm whether it uses USB-C or micro-USB and whether the exact phone supports USB audio host mode. For micro-USB, check whether OTG is required.
- Check the DAC’s requirements. Confirm its supported USB audio formats, analog output connector, and whether the phone can power it. Consult the maker’s guidance for the exact pairing.
- Get only the adapters and cables the connection requires. A mini-jack DAC output and RCA stereo input call for a 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable; a phone may also need an OTG adapter or, if the pairing requires it, a powered USB hub.
- Connect the phone to the DAC, then the DAC to the stereo. Select the stereo input you used and start playback on the phone. Android documents automatic routing for compatible USB audio playback.
- Adjust volume cautiously. Begin with the stereo volume low, start playback, then raise it gradually. If there is no sound, verify the selected stereo input, cable seating, phone-to-DAC connection, and the compatibility and power requirements.
What the $10 claim does—and doesn’t—establish
The title’s $10 figure is an author-reported purchase price, not a price verified by the available sources. Those sources establish that USB DAC adapters and the needed cable categories exist, but they do not establish a current price, a specific $10 model, or the author’s phone-and-DAC combination. The claim that the stereo became the author’s “best speaker” is subjective and is not supported by a named listener’s account or a measured comparison.
