An old Android phone can be a no-new-hardware emulation handheld if it runs suitable software and you already have the accessories you need. That does not mean every older phone will run every game well: the model, Android version, emulator, and game all matter. The “best” part of the headline is personal; the practical case is that a phone you already own may be good enough for the games you want to play.
Why an old phone can work as an emulation handheld

Choose how you want to control games

Set up the phone without assuming what it can run
- Start with the phone you have. Check that it powers on, can install or run the emulator you intend to use, and has enough storage for your software and game files.
- Choose software for the games you want to play. RetroArch is one Android-supported option, but its platform support does not mean it runs every system or that every core or game is suitable for your phone.
- Try touch controls first, or connect a compatible controller. Android supports game controllers, but controller compatibility and setup can vary.
- Configure input if needed. RetroArch maps physical controller inputs to a virtual RetroPad and documents configuration at broad, per-core, and per-game levels. If the buttons behave incorrectly, adjust the mapping at the level relevant to the problem.
- Test the games you actually want to play. Try them on your specific phone and emulator. Platform support alone cannot predict smoothness, battery life, or compatibility for a particular device.
What “best” and “free” mean in this case
Calling an old phone the best handheld in the house is a personal judgment, not a claim that it outperforms dedicated devices. A phone can be the best fit for someone who already owns it, wants to reuse it, and finds its controls and performance adequate for their chosen games.
