An old Android phone can run Android apps that still support its Android version and hardware, plus selected command-line tools through Termux. A Raspberry Pi is the more direct choice for projects built around Raspberry Pi OS, Debian packages, headless Linux, or the Pi’s physical interfaces. The right option depends on the software and hardware your project actually needs.

Can an old Android phone run the app you need?
There is no universal answer without the phone model, Android version, and app. Android app availability and operation can depend on platform version, device features, and screen configuration. Android Developers explains that distribution filters can use these criteria, and that “Each device must pass the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) to be considered compatible.” See Android Developers’ compatibility documentation.
Before choosing the phone, check the app’s stated Android requirement and whether it needs hardware the handset has. A phone’s age alone does not establish whether an app will work, and this comparison cannot determine whether a particular old handset still receives security updates.
What Termux does—and does not—make possible
Termux provides a terminal emulator and Linux environment on Android. Its documented setup supports installing tools such as Node.js and Git, making it useful for some shell-based work and development tasks. Accessing shared phone storage requires granting permission. The Termux documentation describes setup and storage access at termux.dev.

Termux is not a blanket replacement for a Raspberry Pi OS desktop or for software that expects a conventional Debian system. Whether a particular program works depends on that program and the phone. Nor does installing a terminal guarantee access to arbitrary hardware interfaces.
What Raspberry Pi OS offers
Raspberry Pi OS is based on Debian and supports over 69,000 Debian packages, according to Raspberry Pi’s OS documentation. Its editions serve different needs:

Raspberry Pi OS is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The processor architecture of the specific board matters when selecting an image; consult the Raspberry Pi OS guidance for board compatibility and current options.
What setup a Raspberry Pi needs
A Pi must boot from prepared storage. Raspberry Pi recommends a card of at least 32 GB for Desktop and Full editions and 8 GB for Lite; these are recommendations, not broader minimum hardware requirements. See Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation.

For a desktop setup, plan on a monitor with a cable suited to the board, plus a keyboard and mouse. A headless setup can be configured from another networked computer. Some Pi models need particular adapters or a powered USB hub, so check the chosen board’s requirements before assembling peripherals.

- Choose the phone if the required app supports its Android version, the handset has the needed features, and reusing its screen, camera, battery, or sensors is useful.
- Choose the Pi if the project expects Raspberry Pi OS, Debian packages, a command-line-only headless system, or the Pi hardware platform.
- If your project depends on a specific port, sensor, app, or package, verify compatibility against the exact phone or Pi model rather than assuming one device can substitute for the other.
There is no meaningful general performance winner without exact models and a defined workload. The phone’s make and model, Android version, intended software, and—on the Pi side—the board model are needed to make a more specific compatibility or performance judgment.
