A var() fallback does not protect against a browser that accepts an oklch() token inside a custom property but cannot use that value as a color. To support that case, give the variable a conventional color by default and assign the OKLCH value only inside an @supports query for the relevant color syntax. Keep a conventional declaration at the point where the variable is used, too.
Why doesn’t var(--color, fallback) work for old browsers?
The fallback in var(--ink, #202020) is used when the custom-property reference is missing or invalid. It is not a compatibility fallback for a browser that does not understand the color syntax stored in a defined custom property. MDN’s guide to using CSS custom properties makes the distinction explicit: “Fallback values aren’t used to fix compatibility issues for when CSS custom properties are not supported, as the fallback value won’t help in this case.”

Custom properties can hold token sequences without checking whether those tokens are valid for the property that will eventually consume them. If an unsupported oklch() value is substituted into color, that declaration can become invalid at computed-value time. The browser then uses the property’s inherited or initial value. A preceding color: #202020 is therefore not a dependable escape route: the later color: var(--ink) may win the cascade before its substituted value proves unusable.

Set conventional colors as the default custom-property values, preserve direct conventional declarations before the variable-based declarations, and override the tokens only when a feature query confirms support for the color value.

The defaults provide a usable token value in browsers that support custom properties but not the tested OKLCH syntax. The direct declarations provide a fallback for browsers without custom-property support. Browsers that accept the queried syntax use the enhanced tokens. This pattern follows the documented parsing and feature-query rules; it is not a claim of independent browser testing.
What does @supports (color: oklch(...)) check?
@supports is a feature query: it tests whether the browser supports a CSS feature. For a new value of an existing property, test the property-value pair, not just the property name. @supports (color: oklch(60% 0.2 30)) asks whether the browser accepts that kind of OKLCH value for color. Put the enhanced custom-property assignments inside the query. MDN’s feature-query guide describes these rules as tests of support for CSS features such as properties and property values.

Feature queries are a progressive-enhancement tool, not a requirement for every new CSS feature. Unsupported declarations are generally ignored. They are useful here because a custom property can store a value before the browser validates it against the consuming property.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does the query cover every OKLCH feature?
No. The query checks the syntax in the declaration you give it; support for basic absolute oklch() does not establish support for every newer OKLCH-related feature, such as relative-color syntax. If your compatibility target depends on a specific syntax, test that syntax and verify it against your browser policy. MDN marks oklch() as widely available across browsers since May 2023, while noting that support for some parts varies. See its OKLCH reference for current syntax and compatibility details.
