O’Hare Flyer is a proposed express rail service between downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport—not an operating train. Its founders say they are working toward agreements with the freight railroads whose rights-of-way the route would use, while raising private financing and pursuing approvals. The project’s targets include a 15-minute trip to Terminal 2, construction as soon as 2028 and service within five years; none is a confirmed outcome.
What O’Hare Flyer proposes
Announced on August 25, 2026, O’Hare Flyer is a privately financed express rail concept linking a downtown station near the Old Post Office with O’Hare Terminal 2. The project says trains would make the trip in 15 minutes and depart every 15 minutes. Those are proposed service figures, not independently verified performance.
The project proposes battery-electric trains on dedicated track using existing freight railroad rights-of-way. It says trains would recharge at the downtown and airport stations. Its FAQ describes luggage racks and characterizes the ride as clean, quiet and comfortable; these are project descriptions, not measured operating results. What the founders say must happen next
Complete agreements with the railroads
The proposed route depends on access to rights-of-way associated with CSX, Canadian National and Union Pacific. O’Hare Flyer says it has agreed on terms with CSX in a Letter of Intent and is working toward definitive agreements with all three carriers. The project FAQ says those agreements are still being finalized. An LOI with CSX is not a completed agreement with all three railroads, and the reviewed sources do not establish that access is secured.

CSX Senior Director of Passenger Operations Andy Daly said in the project announcement: “CSX is pleased to work with the O’Hare Flyer team to support a safe and reliable transportation option for Chicago travelers.” That statement describes CSX’s work with the team; it does not establish final route agreements. Raise capital and pursue approvals
The project says it is seeking equity and debt and is not seeking government subsidies. WBEZ Chicago reported a proposed project cost of $2.25 billion. That is a reported estimate, not an independently validated final cost, and the available sources do not establish that financing has been secured. WBEZ Chicago’s report

The FAQ says the project is seeking approvals and welcomes public support, but the reviewed materials do not provide a complete list of required approvals or show that they have been obtained. Railroad access, financing and approvals are therefore significant unresolved steps, rather than completed milestones.
When could construction and service begin?
O’Hare Flyer says construction could start as soon as 2028 and commercial service could begin within five years. Both are conditional project targets, not confirmed dates or guarantees. The source materials do not show that construction has begun or establish an opening date.

What riders know—and what remains unknown
The proposal gives a headline train time and frequency, but those figures alone do not determine a traveler’s door-to-door journey. The station’s exact access arrangements, transfers, final fare, accessibility details and baggage handling beyond the stated luggage racks are not fully established in the reviewed materials. The same distinction matters when comparing this proposal with existing airport connections: compare actual endpoints, access time at both ends, frequency, transfers, fare, accessibility, operating status and whether the route has secured its required right-of-way. A proposed 15-minute train ride is not a verified 15-minute trip from a traveler’s starting point to their terminal.

Who is behind the proposal?
The project identifies Dave Lundy as founder and CEO and Mark Walbrun as founder and Chief Engineering Officer. WBEZ identifies the co-founding group as Lundy, Walbrun and Kristi Lafleur, describing Walbrun as a veteran rail consultant and reporting Lafleur’s former leadership roles at the Illinois Tollway and Chicago Skyway.
