If an OGG file will not play, first check what codec is inside it: .ogg identifies a container, not a single audio format. A player may not support that codec, browser and operating-system support can differ, or a website may be serving the file with incorrect media information. The steps below help narrow down which issue you have before you convert anything.
Start by checking where playback fails
Try the file in the context where it is supposed to play, then compare with a second reputable media player. Note whether it fails everywhere, only in one app, or only on a website. That distinction helps separate a file or stream problem from a player or web-delivery problem.

- It fails in one player but works in another: the first player may lack support for the codec or container combination. Working in another player is useful evidence, but does not by itself prove the file is intact.
- It plays locally but not on a website: check the website’s media response headers and codec declaration.
- It fails in multiple players: inspect the file’s streams and probe errors, then compare it with a fresh copy if possible.
What does an OGG file contain?
Ogg is a container: it packages media streams, but the .ogg extension alone does not tell you which codec is inside. Ogg can contain Vorbis or Opus audio and video streams. Container support and codec support are separate questions; a player that recognizes Ogg may still not support the particular stream inside it. FFprobe can report the detected format, streams, and probe errors. Its documentation describes how to inspect multimedia input. A successful probe means the tool recognized information about the file; it does not guarantee that your intended player supports those streams.

Check browser and operating-system compatibility
Browser support depends on the codec and platform, so a file that works in one browser may fail in another or in an embedded web player. MDN’s compatibility table lists Ogg Opus audio for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, while it lists Ogg Vorbis for Firefox and Safari. Those entries are guidance for browser support, not a guarantee for every operating system, version, or playback implementation.
Safari support is version-dependent. MDN says Safari 18.4 and later added Ogg Opus and Vorbis support on macOS 15.4 and later, iOS 18.4 and later, iPadOS 18.4 and later, and visionOS 2.4 and later. For another Safari version or platform, check the current MDN compatibility table rather than assuming support.

If it fails only on a website, check media headers
When local playback works but a webpage does not, the server may be sending an incorrect Content-Type or incomplete codec information. The media type should match the actual content. Where the codec is known, a specific media type and, when relevant, a codecs parameter can help the browser identify the stream. MDN documents application/ogg as a fallback when the contents are unknown; it recommends a specific type when they are known. See MDN’s Ogg server configuration guidance.
If you manage the site, compare the response’s Content-Type and codec declaration with the file’s actual streams. If you do not manage it, share the playback failure and browser details with the site owner; changing a local player will not correct a server response.

Use another player as a compatibility check
Try opening the file in a second player that publishes support for the relevant format. VideoLAN lists OGG/OGM among VLC’s input formats and Vorbis among its audio codecs on its VLC features page. If the file plays there, the original app may lack needed support. If it does not, that still does not identify whether the cause is an unsupported stream, a damaged file, or another issue.

Use FFprobe to see whether the file can be opened and which format and streams it detects. The tool can also report probe errors, but an error is a clue to investigate—not definitive proof of a particular cause.

- Run FFprobe on the file using the command form documented by the FFprobe documentation, for example
ffprobe input.ogg. - Check whether it identifies the container and lists audio or video streams, including their codecs.
- If it reports an error or cannot identify streams, compare the result with a fresh copy of the file or inspect that copy with another tool.
- If the streams are recognized, compare their codecs with the support information for the player or browser where playback fails.
Do not treat a probe result as a playback test: it can describe the file without confirming compatibility with a particular destination.

Convert only when the destination requires it
If the file plays in one application but not in the device or app you need, convert a copy to a format that destination documents as supported. The right output depends on the destination; there is no single conversion target established as suitable for every player. FFmpeg’s general documentation covers its format and codec tools.
