Facebook Messenger and Instagram were reported as official apps for Samsung’s Tizen Store in the week of July 13–14, 2015, with the Samsung Z1 identified as the target phone. Messenger reportedly also needed a separate Facebook Service download. The reports establish a Tizen Store release, but not whether the apps were built natively for Tizen or how closely their features matched Android and iOS versions.
What launched, and when?
The release covered two separate apps: Facebook Messenger and Instagram. A contemporary report published July 14, 2015, said they were becoming available through the Tizen Store “beginning this week”; a later reference dates Messenger’s Tizen release to July 13. The best-supported description is that the apps appeared around July 13–14, 2015, rather than assigning both a definitive global launch date. Softpedia’s July 14, 2015 report is the surviving contemporary account.
The report identifies the Samsung Z1 as the intended device. It does not establish that the full Facebook app suite launched at the same time, nor does it document availability across every country or Tizen phone.
How Z1 owners got the apps
The reported distribution channel was the Tizen Store on the Samsung Z1. The surviving account does not give a more detailed menu path, account requirements, or troubleshooting instructions.

Softpedia reported launch-era download sizes of approximately 25 MB for Messenger and 29 MB for Facebook Service, and said both were needed for Messenger to work. These are figures from that 2015 report, not current package sizes or independently verified specifications. Their combined reported size is about 54 MB before updates or user data.
Why two social apps mattered to Tizen
The Z1 was Samsung’s first Tizen-powered smartphone for India. Samsung announced it on January 14, 2015, at ₹5,700, positioning it for first-time smartphone buyers and emphasizing features such as localized content, ease of use, and data-conscious services. The apps’ arrival roughly six months later addressed a practical concern for a new phone platform: whether people could access familiar services beyond the software supplied by the manufacturer.
At the Z1’s launch, Samsung said the Tizen Store had more than 1,000 apps. Contemporary reporting contrasted that smaller catalog with Google Play’s much larger selection. Messenger and Instagram therefore mattered as recognizable additions, but two releases could not by themselves close the broader app-ecosystem gap. Samsung also offered developers 100% of net revenue from Tizen Store app sales and in-app purchases for one year in connection with the Z1 launch, an incentive aimed at expanding that ecosystem.

Did “official” mean native Tizen apps?
Contemporary coverage described Messenger and Instagram as official apps distributed through the Tizen Store. That supports distinguishing them from an unofficial third-party client, but it does not prove the underlying implementation: the available reporting does not establish whether either app was a fully native Tizen build, a port, or used a compatibility framework.
This distinction matters because launch-era reporting about Android app compatibility on the Z1 was inconsistent. One account discussed OpenMobile’s ACL compatibility layer, while Samsung was quoted as saying Android and iOS apps had to be rewritten to run on Tizen. Neither statement establishes how these particular social apps were engineered. TechCrunch’s launch coverage and The Indian Express report reflect that broader compatibility discussion.
Nor does an official listing establish feature parity. The sources do not show that calls, notifications, camera tools, or other functions matched the Android or iOS versions.

Device availability was regional; app availability is less certain
The Z1 launched in India on January 14, 2015, and Samsung announced its release in Bangladesh on February 3, 2015. Samsung’s launch-era reporting said it had not decided whether to introduce the phone in additional countries. Those device-market facts do not prove where the two app listings could be accessed: the surviving app report does not map availability by country, store account, or firmware.
Because this was a 2015 Tizen Store release, it should be treated as a historical event, not evidence that either app remains downloadable or functional in 2026. The sources cited here do not establish the subsequent support lifespan. If a historical Z1 owner could not find Messenger or Instagram, country or account settings, device or firmware compatibility, or discontinued distribution are possible explanations—not confirmed causes. If Messenger installed but failed to open, the reported Facebook Service dependency is one item to check, though the report does not document a universal fix. The phone’s limited 4 GB internal storage also made space a practical consideration.
What the launch does—and does not—show
The release was a useful ecosystem milestone: Tizen Z1 owners were reported to gain access to two prominent social services through the platform’s own store. It does not establish that the apps were technically native, globally available, feature-equivalent to their Android and iOS counterparts, or still supported today. Its significance is best understood in the context of Samsung’s early effort to make Tizen a viable smartphone platform for buyers who might otherwise choose Android.
