The apps may keep working after that date, but Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, software updates, or security fixes for subsequently reported or discovered vulnerabilities. You do not have to replace Office immediately—but continuing to use it means accepting that support and security trade-off.
What happens when Office 2021 support ends?
Office 2021 does not automatically shut off on October 13. Microsoft says its apps may continue to function. The change is that Microsoft stops providing technical support, bug fixes, software updates, and security fixes for vulnerabilities reported or discovered after support ends. Microsoft also says there will be no extended security updates. Microsoft Support explains the end of Office 2021 support.

Microsoft Support gives the consumer-facing deadline as October 13, 2026. Microsoft Lifecycle lists October 14, 2026 and notes that its dates are shown in Pacific Time. Treat October 13 as the deadline; the one-day display difference is not an extra day of support.
Your five options after Office 2021
| Option | Purchase or deployment model | Support horizon and key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Office 2021 | Continue using your existing installation | Apps may continue to work, but Microsoft support, bug fixes, software updates, and security fixes end October 13, 2026; no extended security updates are offered. |
| Buy Office 2024 | One-time purchase for one PC or Mac | Supported through October 9, 2029. It does not include Microsoft 365 services. |
| Move to Microsoft 365 Apps | Subscription | Includes current apps and cloud services; recurring billing applies. Microsoft does not give this option a fixed end date in the cited guidance. |
| Use Microsoft 365 web apps | Browser-based workflow | Can avoid installing a desktop suite. Check current plan and feature details to confirm the apps support your needs. |
| For organizations: consider Office LTSC 2024 | Organization-focused, on-premises deployment | Supported through October 9, 2029. Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for organizations upgrading from Office LTSC 2021, while identifying LTSC 2024 for commercial customers not ready to move to cloud services. |
1. Keep using Office 2021 for now
This may be the least disruptive choice if your apps and documents already work for you and you are not ready to migrate. It is not a way to keep receiving security fixes: after October 13, 2026, Microsoft says it will provide none for newly reported or discovered vulnerabilities. Weigh that ongoing exposure against the cost and effort of changing your setup.

2. Buy Office 2024 for a one-time purchase
Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase of classic Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for one PC or Mac. Its listed retirement date is October 9, 2029. Unlike Microsoft 365, it does not include services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online. See Microsoft’s Office Home 2024 product information and the Office 2024 lifecycle page for the product and support details.
3. Move to Microsoft 365 Apps
A subscription is the route to consider if you want desktop apps alongside Microsoft cloud services. Microsoft says a user can install the apps on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets, and five phones. Its listed benefits also include 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user, full-featured web apps, and Microsoft support. Those are Microsoft’s stated benefits; check the current plan terms for what applies to your account. The subscription has recurring billing, unlike Office 2024’s one-time purchase. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and remains supported while maintained on a supported, up-to-date configuration, rather than giving it a fixed end date. See Microsoft’s comparison of Microsoft 365 and Office 2024.

5. For managed commercial deployments, consider Office LTSC 2024
Office LTSC is an organization-focused option, not a consumer edition recommendation. Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for organizations moving from Office LTSC 2021. For commercial customers not ready to move to cloud services, Microsoft identifies Office LTSC 2024 as its most recent supported on-premises version. It is listed as supported through October 9, 2029. Before choosing a migration path, organizations should inventory application and document dependencies and coordinate compatibility planning with IT.
