What makes a regular USB-C cable suitable for Link?
USB-C describes the connector shape, not what the cable can do. Some USB-C cables carry data; others may be intended mainly for charging. For Meta Horizon Link, Meta’s hardware setup guidance calls for a USB-C data cable supporting 5 GB/s or higher and recommends the Meta Horizon Link Cable. The recommendation is not a requirement to use Meta’s cable.

A cable’s label is a useful starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. The practical check is whether the cable and the specific PC port provide a compatible connection when tested in Meta Horizon Link.

How to test your cable and PC port
- Connect the headset to the PC with the USB-C data cable.
- Open Meta Horizon Link and go to Devices. Select the connected headset, then choose the device setup option for Link Cable. Menu wording can vary by app version.
- Run Test Connection and check whether the app reports a compatible connection.
- If the result is Incompatible or the app reports low bandwidth, try another data cable. You can also check the connection speed using the USB test under Devices.
Meta’s Link setup instructions recommend testing the connection and trying another cable when compatibility or bandwidth is inadequate. Test the actual cable-and-port combination you plan to use; a result with one port does not establish how another port will perform.

What the speed figures do—and do not—mean
Meta’s 5 GB/s-or-higher guidance is for the USB-C data cable in its hardware setup instructions. Separately, Meta says Color Passthrough over Link requires at least 2 Gbps of effective USB bandwidth. That figure applies to Color Passthrough over Link specifically; it is not stated as a universal minimum for every Link use. Meta also points users to a USB speed test in the PC app. See its Passthrough over Link documentation.
What to consider when choosing a cable
- Data capability and speed: Choose a data-capable USB-C cable that meets Meta’s stated speed guidance.
- Test result: Use the app’s connection test to verify the cable with your PC port and headset.
- Fit and handling: Check that the cable’s connectors match your devices and that its arrangement and handling suit your setup. Meta’s cited guidance does not establish a universally best cable length.
Neither a USB 3 marking nor a cable type alone proves that your particular connection will pass Meta’s test. The cited guidance also does not establish a guaranteed charging rate while playing, so do not infer charging performance from a cable’s data rating.

Why older advice may sound broader
When Oculus Link launched in beta, Meta said in its Nov. 18, 2019 announcement that “Oculus Link software will work with most high-quality USB 3 cables.” That statement is historical context, not a substitute for Meta’s current hardware guidance and connection test. See the 2019 announcement.
