What are October’s birthstones?
The October birthstones are opal and tourmaline, as listed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA describes opal as the traditional October stone and tourmaline as the newer addition. They are alternatives, not two names for the same gem: opal is known for optical color effects, while tourmaline is valued for its broad palette.

Hardness describes resistance to scratching, not overall toughness or resistance to breaking. GIA’s care guidance characterizes opal’s toughness as very poor to fair and tourmaline’s as fair. These hardness ranges are gem-property ratings, not guarantees that a particular stone will withstand every impact.

In precious opal, orderly silica spheres diffract light, creating the shifting flashes known as play-of-color. The visible pattern and colors vary from stone to stone. Opal can also occur without this effect, so the word “opal” alone does not guarantee a colorful display. GIA explains the phenomenon in its opal overview.

What to check when buying opal jewelry
- Ask whether the opal is solid or assembled. A doublet or triplet is made by combining layers rather than using a single solid piece of opal. Prolonged water exposure may weaken the adhesive in these assembled stones.
- Ask about treatments. GIA notes that opal may be treated with oil, wax, or plastic impregnation, or with surface treatments such as sugar or smoke. Treatment information helps you understand what you are buying and how to care for it.
- Assess the stone and setting together. Look at its pattern, play-of-color, clarity, and how securely and protectively it is set. Origin alone does not establish quality or value.
- Consider documentation for a significant purchase. GIA’s Colored Stone Identification Report can assess material characteristics, identify whether material is natural or laboratory-grown, and name detectable treatments. Care for October birthstone jewelry
Opal: gentle cleaning and careful storage
Clean opal with warm, soapy water. Avoid intense heat and sudden temperature changes, which can cause fracture or crazing. Store it separately from harder gemstones to reduce the risk of scratches. Tourmaline: avoid heat and harsh cleaning methods
Use warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Tourmaline is generally stable to light and chemicals, but heat may alter its color or cause damage, and sudden temperature changes can fracture it. October birthstone history and symbolism
Opal
GIA says the name opal is believed to derive from the Sanskrit word upala, meaning “precious stone,” through the history of opals brought to the Western world and the Roman term opalus. Historical cultures associated opal with ideas such as protection, prophecy, purity, hope, and truth. These are cultural beliefs, not gemological properties.
Tourmaline
GIA traces tourmaline’s name to the Sinhalese toramalli, meaning “stone with mixed colors.” Its varied hues also led to historical confusion with other gems. Folklore has linked tourmaline with artistic inspiration or color-specific healing, but those ideas are beliefs rather than demonstrated effects.
